When I first enrolled at Arizona State University I was notified that I was going to enrolled into a cohort and program called “Lead”, I did not know what “Lead” was, what it was for, or how it would affect my day to day life. When the first semester at ASU began I realized that “Lead” was designed to help students make a smooth transition into college and that the college retention rate was much higher of a Lead student than a non-Lead student. I liked this idea, I liked the idea of a group of people coaching me along a new changing path rather than just getting thrown into the ring. Another accomplishment I had during my second semester in the Lead Program was that I became more social within the cohort. Shelby, Josh, Matthew Chapman, Amanda, and Cody all slowly helped me gain the confidence that I needed to become more sociable, I feel as if now people like me for me and that was always something I was a little insecure about, after two semesters of Lead; those insecurities are fading. Weaknesses I found during this academic year and this semester was that I dropped my Brief Calculus class, I feel as if I quit too early due to me not getting it right away and my teacher having poor communication, I look to correct this problem next semester by instituting better communication with my professors and not quitting until the last available day, if needed. In this course, I feel I didn’t do enough to make sure Uber was at our showcase, I feel I could have been more persistent and pushy to get their arrival, I will combat this problem by always fighting hard for what I …show more content…
In regard to Lead, my advice is to enjoy it. Enjoy every minute of it, it bonds you to people slowly but surely and you will miss them as the program comes to an end, just be present in each moment and have fun in Lead; it’s there to help you along. My greatest challenge has been planning ahead of the class schedule, this has affected my academic life as I can feel very stressed and then cram all my work into one night, resulting in me being upset and my work not being the best it could be. To manage this challenge, I will be implementing the newly found myHomework app into my everyday academic life. This semester I changed my antisocial ways, I became more open to talking thoroughly with new people and trying to spend more time with my fellow students, it has impacted me by making me happier. In my junior year of high school, I joined the leadership program called ASB, also known as associated student body. I had the honor and role of being the school’s unofficial videographer to promote events with videos and short films posted on our social media sites because of my passion for video editing and artistic abilities. I also became responsible as being chairman for one of our committees to organize special recognition events for our senior athletes. ASB made my work stressful and challenging, but it was a good way to connect with others.
At the beginning of my freshman year, I was ready for whatever was going to be thrown at me. I was excited for the new school and the new opportunities. I had barely made the golf team but for some reason that did not faze me. I had friends from my prior years of schools and I was happy. The classes were easier than I thought they were going to be which was my biggest worry going in. Little did I know that my friendships were the biggest issue.
Conclusion Ultimately I did a much better job of implementing course material into my approach to leading the project team. Though no formal leadership role was established, I ended up becoming the “point-man.” Instead of viewing this reality as a burden (as I have been) I should make the most of the opportunity to better myself and potentially others. Additionally, and perhaps most importantly, I need to make sure that I am meeting and exceeding the demands that the group places on itself and demonstrate that I am motivated.
Throughout the novel, The Student Leadership Challenge: Five Practices for Exemplary Leaders, authors James M. Kouzes and Barry Z. Posner share with young student leaders the skills they have found for effective leadership. The authors wrote The Student Leadership Challenge hoping to strengthen the abilities and uplift the spirits of leaders by introducing the five principles: modeling the way, inspiring a shared vision, challenging the process, enabling others to act, and encouraging the heart (Kouzes and Posner 3).
Last school year, when I picked up an application to join Student Leadership I, I had no idea what I was signing myself up for, except for the general idea of what a leader was to me; a bossy, demanding, sometimes hypocritical individual wanting to help others in dire situations. However, I made myself take a mental oath not to be one of those stereotypical leaders, well maybe I was going to be a tad bit on the demanding side, but not always. Little did I know, there is much more to leaders and leadership, which I failed to notice. The beginning of school brought tons of excitement and with it our first self-assessment exercise (August 18, 2009). Though this exercise, I found out what I thought I knew about myself turned out slightly different than predicted. For instance, through the interesting pig drawing activity, I already knew I was a realist, cautious, stubborn, and secure in my settings. I entered the Leadership Program with a narrow mind. I thought that I knew the expectations of leadership along with everything that leadership entails. After all, how difficult could it be to persuade others to see your personal opinion and then, get them to follow your dreams? All one needed to do was be passionate about a cause and have good public speaking techniques. Little did I know, there is a lot more to being a leader than meets the eye. By participating, I was subjected to various leadership characteristics and practices: time management, conflict management, ethical and moral decision making, valuing diversity, and creative thinking.
Many organizations today place multiple demands on its leaders to provide vision, initiate change, and make difficult decisions when necessary. In order for leaders to handle these demands, leaders must be able to be flexible and most importantly be able adapt to change. Having strong leadership skills and a sense of direction are part of the trades that successful businesses seek in a leader. Therefore, it is important for leaders to engage effectively with their subordinates in order to build commitment, in order to motivate and improve the quantity and quality of their work. Good leaders will find innovated ways to motivate their staff using a variety of skills whether it is through training or experience, which will help to accomplish a common goal.
I am honored to be recognized as one of the students to be considered for the National Junior Honor Society. I believe that this organization has done great things for the community and I would like to help in doing so. It has been my goal all year to become National Junior Honor Society member, and now I am granted the chance to achieve my yearlong goal.
Everyday we are leaning new skills and talents for leadership. In every decision we make we learn whether we realize it or not. One of my best skills of leadership is leading my example. I am not a very outgoing person so taking charge of situations will not be something I do, but I lead by way of my actions. It is difficult to lead that way because if a mistake is made that is the only thing people remember. My biggest weakness has to do with me not being outgoing.
