For the entirety of my high school career, I have been a student in the Leadership Center for the Sciences and Engineering (LCSE) held at Norview High School. Specifically, this program is designed for students who excel in math and sciences, and it provides a foundation for those who aspire to become engineers. Being enrolled within LCSE has strengthened and pushed me academically, as a leader, with public speaking, and as a service worker.
Without a doubt, LCSE has driven me to be academically determined. Our cohort was required to engage in multiple advanced mathematic and science studies. Due to these rigorous classes, I have confidence when entering a new course because I know now that with hard work, I can overcome any obstacle.
Throughout high school, I have been involved in many activities including: National Honor Society, student council, National Council on Youth Leadership, student ambassador, drama club, yearbook, and chamber choir. It is throughout these activities that I have felt myself grow as a person and have found many opportunities to shine as a leader. The Burger King scholarship is an amazing opportunity and an extremely generous foundation. It is with the help of this foundation that allows for people to make their dreams come true. I am grateful to of been chosen as a Burger King Scholar and will use the scholarship to make a difference.
My future plans include getting accepted into the A. James Clark School of Engineering honors program at the University of Maryland, College Park. In order to make this a reality, I studied daily in preparation for the SATs, taking the initiative by applying for different scholarships, taking challenging classes and involving myself in extracurriculars to shape myself into a well-rounded candidate. Being accepted into the SEAP program would be another valuable step forward in making that goal a reality. Subsequently what is done is that selected high schools develop a curriculum that is organized around a specific career cluster, which are like a specialized charter school. The goal is to feature a series advanced “pathway” courses that can help students to enrich their knowledge through work-based learning and academics. In turn, this specialized education will allow student to demonstrate their understanding through assessments and industry credentialing opportunities. As well these schools are enrolled in a learning exchange that have partnerships that are organized to support the programs of study by coordinating statewide networks of education partners, businesses, industry associations, labor, and other organizations (2013, p. 21-23). Consequently, the program is driven to help high school students develop a career path and to receive exploratory education that will given them an advantage in either college endeavors or in the job market.
In my junior year of high school, I joined the leadership program called ASB, also known as associated student body. I had the honor and role of being the school’s unofficial videographer to promote events with videos and short films posted on our social media sites because of my passion for video editing and artistic abilities. I also became responsible as being chairman for one of our committees to organize special recognition events for our senior athletes. ASB made my work stressful and challenging, but it was a good way to connect with others.
Over the course of two years, I was able to create bonds and gain long lasting mentors from these experiences. In this program, I did case studies on sexual health, neurology, and public health. With these case studies, I was able to practice leadership skills and investigative thinking along with my peers. Through the Emory Pipeline Program, I also learned new technology within the medical field and how the new technology aided our local hospitals. These experiences opened doors for me to explore what my career calling was.
Leadership a vital aspect in National Honor Society and it is essential in the professional world as well. Taking the initiative to help is others is one way I demonstrate leadership, in addition, to putting others needs before my own. I grew up in a household where education was seen as a form of self-improvement and empowerment. Being raised in rural Central California by two Filipino immigrants who had nothing more than a high school education, my family did not have an educated or intellectual history I could look up to. That is, until my mother decided to get a college education at the age of 45. I must have been in middle school at the time, before which the word “college” was never really spoken or talked about and I could honestly say I only had a vague idea of what it even was. Rather than having the traditional sit down talk with my parents about higher education, my mom clearly spoke to me through example. I distinctly remember times where I would be her study buddy, and while doing so, I found myself leisurely enjoying the pages of her science textbooks. Instead of asking her questions related to her upcoming text, I inquisitively asked juvenile questions like, “How do the genes make us?” Today I know that this is a very big and complex question that we are still trying to answer. Yet at that moment, I wanted an answer, but mother did not have the solution, nor did the textbook. That was the birth of my pursuit of scientific career.

I have had the privilege of receiving my Bachelor’s degree, my Master’s degree, and most recently my Doctoral degree from the newly designed Educational Leadership program at WCU. I have had the honor of taking classes from some of WCU’s paramount professors, including Jane Schultz, Ellen Bacon, Lisa Bloom, Casey Hurley, Robert Crow, Kofi Lomotey, Kathleen Jorrisen, Anne Allen, and David Sutton. Whoosh!A bed whizzed by, surrounded by about 6 medical personnel. “What’s going on?” I thought immediately with apprehension. I knew whatever was happening it was not ideal. Ensuring I was not in the way, I stood on my toes to see what demanded so much attention. To my astonishment, I saw a coin sized hot-pink little girl.
