As a sports psychologist, I expect to have clients who come to me for different reasons.
Some athletes seek a psychologist for fears of failure and performance outcome or help with making sure they’re mentally prepared for the big game. Sports psychologist, as well as other psychologists, play a huge role in assisting clients to access their full potential. Helping an athlete to create and obtain goals can impact his or her performance. There are three main types of goals, outcome, performance and process goals. Some athletes may want to figure out what external factors are causing the change in stress and then identify why. Even though found to be less effective, others would rather ignore all. In regards to Jamal, not being able to perform as aggressively discouraged him as a result of his lack of motivation he did not make a team. For us to get Jamal back on his A-game. He should take the time to asses what he could have done better performance wise, and then learn to take the coaches criticism and inquire how he could do better. Whether you’re an athlete or not it is vital to remain motivated because like with Jamal and many other people, lack of motivation will hinder your progress and result in failure of any related goals. However, to bring Jamal’s confidence and motivation back up he has three forms of self-talk to choose from task-specific relating to technique, encouragement and effort and mood words. As his sports psychologist I would recommend Encouragement and effort, at a time like this Jamal is a risk for never wanting to play basketball again. For example while he is playing on the freshmen team he can say to himself “starting from the bottom but I’ll be there” to note that even though he may not have made it on his desired team he will work hard to make it there next year. If Jamal says this in combination with physically working hard he is more likely to increase his motivation and improve his skills. It will benefit Jamal and all other athletes if they practiced progressive relaxation before and after games. Progressive relaxation will require Jamal to isolate himself and physically lay out flat with limbs spread out. Then he’d have to tense up different muscles and then relax them. The objective of this is to be able to quickly defuse when an athlete feels like his mind and body are tensing up or stressing. However, what this argument does not take into account is that athletes have an abundance of pressure put on them that most non-athletes don’t ever experience. Hence, the saying, “go hard or go home”. A recent study emphasizes this fact as McClatchy notes, ”The researchers monitored mood levels of 465 collegiate athletes over three years and found 6.3 percent of the athletes met the criteria for clinically significant depression and 24 percent were considered ‘clinically relevant’ “ (2016). Studies like these prove that athletes are not blind to the idea of depression, but rather experience this disorder themselves. Anxiety has a huge role in depression. As sportsperson, there is constant effort to become an awe-inspiring player. As the stakes of the game raise, so does the anxiety. Some want a scholarship, some want to show off what they offer to a team that got a scholarship, and some are professionals. Regardless of whether it's grade school sport or a professional sport, failing at personal goals one set is down right depressing. Kearns and Hwang state that, ”While it’s not clear whether the source of challenges to a student-athlete's mental well-being is the same as those non-athletes, collegiate athletes are known to encounter unique stressor that the general population doesn’t have to deal with, such as the demands, relationships with coaches and missed scheduled classes” (2014). Pressure is something everyone experiences. However, athletes experience some of the same pressure that of non-athletes and then some. Being on a sports team is demanding to time and the idea of being “superior”. In athletics, coaches are everything. For example, If a coach likes how a person attributes as a team player, then that person will get a chance to shine. The goal of every coach is to create an environment in which his athletes can flourish. Performance anxiety is a coach’s worst enemy simply because it can have a negative impact both mentally and physically on athletes. The mastery approach to coaching is a cognitive-behavioral intervention designed to promote a mastery-involving motivational climate (Smith, Smoll, Cumming, 2007). How a coach handles his athletes is essential for their confidence and ability to overcome any level of performance anxiety. Critical or punitive feedback from coaches can evoke high levels of negative affect in children who fear failure and disapproval, thereby contributing to a threatening athletic environment (Smith, Smoll, Cumming, 2007).
I am a young ambitious student who strives to excel in everything I do. I want to study Sport Psychology as I know I possess the right skills to further and develop myself in the career of sports. I have the ability to understand others in sports as I also play sports myself. I have been in high pressured sporting situations which I have used my psychological skills to help increase my performance. Behavior modification in athletics requires the development of goals. It needs one overall goal as well as small step goals. Goal setting is one of the strongest motivational tools. Studies have shown that goals should be broken down into short-term or intermediate goals to help attain the ultimate goals; goals must be accepted by the individual; challenging goals are better than easy ones; tracking progress is useful to remain committed to goals; and a plan of action facilitates goal attainment (Annesi, 2004). With the addition of a written contract binding the athlete to their goals it acts as another enforcer to accomplish their desired behavior.
And because of the obvious problems with anxiety, there are a few key ways that show how treatment helps athletes out. According to Damon and his colleague, teams and individuals can attain greater consistent levels of confidence if it is based on performance as opposed to outcome. Scholars argue that performance goals are flexible and in apposition to enable athletes to be in control. Progressive achievement in performance will propel athletes to goals achievement and improve motivation. Eventually, their success will be manifested in their tremendous performance which will also attract higher levels of self-confidence. Contrary, the sports people with outcome confidence often believe that higher performance could allow them to improve their social image. All this confirms that the success in sports is integrated with the levels of self-confidence, performance, and outcome. However, it is advisable for athletes and other sports people to focus on their performance but not their outcomes if there is need to improve their skills for the sake of goals
Sports Psychology is a newer psychology that has to do with the mental aspects of athletes and sports. With sports psychology being a newer branch of psychology, there is not as much research behind if the branch is effective or not. “I asked coaches, ‘What percentage of [sports] is mental?’ and they all responded that it’s 35%, 50%, even 80% mental,” Dr. Joel Fish, the official sports psychologist for Penn Athletics, recalled. “So, if the game is largely mental, then let’s spend time during the week thinking about the mental part of the game.”

When kids are in pressuring situations they can have two outcomes, they step up and play better or they don’t. Either way there is potential for improvement in their sport. If they step up and play well they become better in game situations. If they play poorly in a pressuring situation they can become driven to improve their skills so that the next time they can be the difference maker. As I write this my basketball team is coming off a tough loss, I had a bad game and I feel like I could have done more to contribute to the team, I think this is the feeling that drives kids to become better when they have bad games.
During the semester, I learned a lot on how to deal with psychological distress and how as an athletic trainer I should deal with athletes to overcome their situation and be there for them. Throughout my time as an athletic training student, I always liked to observe my preceptors on how they deal with athletics that are having psychological distress after injuries, and how as an athletic trainer I should handle these situations in a professional manner. There is one situation in particular that occurred during the King’s College football season that I would like to discuss.
With obesity reaching epidemic proportions worldwide, now is as relevant time to conduct an interview on an athlete preparing for and upcoming event. This is important to gain a further insight, and raise awareness of calorie content and the effect it has on the body and it’s composition.
