Sport psychology is a proficiency that uses psychological knowledge and skills to address optimal performance and well-being of athletes, developmental and social aspects of sports participation, and systemic issues associated with sports settings and organizations. APA recognizes sport psychology as a proficiency acquired after a doctoral degree in one of the primary areas of psychology and licensure as a psychologist. This proficiency should not be confused with those who have earned a doctoral degree in sport psychology, but are not licensed psychologists.

Three things my dancing in ‘The Jive’ involves that lacks in my performance is confidence and timing with music (picking the right music). Three ways I help encourage myself to dance each lesson is by goal setting before each lesson, try to concentrate on the task at hand and by visualising each dance move before performing it.

The word confidence can be defined as the feeling or belief that one can have faith in or rely on someone or something. Confidence is one of the main key aspects used during dancing because if the dancer does have confidence they won’t worry about how it looks or who’s watching. Whereas, if the dancer doesn’t have confidence then they will worry about every little thing and they will think negative about themselves. This was my problem I didn’t have the confidence to dance in front of others meaning that I didn’t want to dance at all. As shown in the left image the word

To have co-ordination the dancer will have the ability to use different parts of the body together smoothly and efficiently. Co-ordination affects dance performance because if people didn’t have co-ordination while dancing then their dance would just look like a bunch of moves put together and it wouldn’t look good or even like a dance; whereas, co-ordination helps the dancer to move correctly and it helps the actual dance to be in correct time and to look appropriate.

...re of different dance cultures within the vocabulary of their scope, then the results would be so astounding as to give that dancer an unspoken quality distinguishing them from among their peers. Movement knowledge is cultural knowledge and remembering that each culture is beautiful and different in its own way can help create a dancer that will resonate with any audience member.

and in front of the whole school during spirit week and international week, without a bit of apprehension. Gaining this confidence was and is the key to victories in dance competitions. Confidence and my familiarity with a variety of dance forms such as hip-hop, jazz, and several Indian classical dances can be credited to my winning first place in a memorable competition, where, for the first time, my two friends and I choreographed the dance piece that we performed. This experience also helped as the same friends and I had 2 weeks to choreograph, perfect, and perform alongside a famous Indian singer as he sang live. These values specifically pushed me advance further into the art form, and were also extremely useful outside of the dance
Ballet is not only the foundation for all dance forms, it is a foundation for confidence and self-awareness as
Sports psychology can be defined as the study and application of the attitudes and behaviors of athletes (including team athletes) that impact (either positively or negatively) performance in sports or competitive settings. The goal of sports psychology is to help athletes and teams identify unhealthy attitudes and beliefs, apply mental toughness skills and peak performance strategies to perform at optimal levels (Cohn). Sports psychology is not recognized as a traditional field of practice offered by graduate programs; although, it is a recognized field of specific study under Kinesiology and Physical Education Programs. Sports psychology was first founded in 1920 by Carl Diem in Berlin, Germany. Later on, in 1925, sport psychology was brought to the U.S by Cloman Griffith. These early psychologists aimed to observe the effects of mental state on different factors of performance such as reaction time, tension, relaxation, and awareness (Haney). In the 1960’s Griffith’s research interest in sports psychology reemerged after having faded away for a while; however, the field had a...
Confidence isn’t gained over night, it is something you feel and work towards; weather it be in class or on a stage, you work towards not being a vulnerable dancer, and showing that you are proud of your dancing. Victoria gained her confidence over the years of being a competitive dancer; the judges were always critiquing her so she could improve her dancing. Going into college, she auditioned for KnightMoves at The University of Central Florida. After gaining two years of a college dance team experience she thought why not push myself harder and become a professional; this is when she decided to audition for The Orlando Magic Dancers. Victoria went to three out of four pre-clinics that they offered, and after every class she went up to the coaches and thanked them. From the coaches, saying “Thank you.” and “It was great seeing you again.” truly pushed her even more to make the team. Victoria said, “my hands were clammy waiting for my name and number to be called, my heart was racing and I tuned everything out. When they called me for the 2014-2015 season, I did not realize that it was me, I had thought it was Victoria Rose.” Standing right beside me was her family, after Victoria’s name was called her family started screaming and crying, they were so proud of her, and I was
Although I am not a great dancer by any means, I learned through my years of involvement in dance that if you want something you should not let any hardships stop you. This message is what helps push me toward success in my educational
Dancing is a tremendously difficult task. That is why all dancers must have a mind mentally
You know how in baseball there are strict rules, same with dance. If you make one wrong move or make a mistake and the judges see it, you get points taken off of your score. That affects the whole team. All games have a goal, have rules, and have restrictions. The goal of dancing is to get better and of course to win a trophy. There are very strict guidelines that the judges have in order to give you the highest score that you can get. Almost every sport out there requires strength, encouragement, and agility. Having good agility can get you somewhere far. Any sports team that you play for or any sport that you play, it requires to be emotionally mature. If you are angry, sad, upset, you have to control how you react to it. This can affect your team and of course you. It can affect the way that you perform. These are just a few reasons of how dance is a
The music is playing and I am behind the curtain, my stomach begins to flutter with excitement, but I welcome the nerves as old friends. I have spent months practicing and know there is a full audience waiting for the show to begin. The fear of forgetting or making a mistake looms over me, but I have learned that it is okay to be nervous as long as I trust in myself and have the confidence to shine. Dancing for the majority of my life has taught me many important and applicable life skills. It taught me discipline not only over my body movements but also my mind performing Grand jeté or a Pirouette. As I got older I realized there was not much difference in learning a dance or studying for a test both involve practice and repetition.
Humans are generally equipped with a capacity for cognitive function at birth, meaning that each person is capable of learning or remembering a certain amount of information. This paper, therefore, joins in the growing discussion on the mental process involved in the creation, learning and execution of dance movements. This process is referred to as the cognitive process which borders on the basic phenomena of cognition: perception, attention, memory and imagination. This interdisciplinary research establishes the place of psychology in dance scholarship.
Sports psychology draws on knowledge from the fields of Kinesiology and Psychology. It involves the study of how psychological factors affect performance and how participation in sport and exercise affect psychological and physical factors. In addition to instruction and training of psychological skills for performance improvement, sport psychology may include work with athletes and coaches regarding injury, rehabilitation, communication, and team building (Weinberg, R.S. & Gould, D.,2010)....
The number of times I’ve performed on stage seems to exceed the number of years I’ve been alive. Therefore, one can only imagine the soothing ambience the stage presents, effectually encompassing me with confidence. And what is to showcase without confidence? You need confidence to persuade the audience mistakes were not made; not to mention the confidence needed to pursue the altercation in the dance. On stage, I do not have time to think t...
... emotionally or physically. Dance is a great way to express yourself when you are happy sad, excited, gloomy, or just to make yourself better. Dance did not start very clean or good, it had a mix of everything and it always will. So people who perform it make the best out of it and it becomes their passion. Always makes the best out of worst by dancing yourself in and out of it.
Sport and exercise psychology is a mandatory aspect of the sport science discipline. This discipline contributes to the various professional practices associated with physical activities such as - teaching of physical education, recreation and health promotion, and kinesiology related professions - because it plays a mental role for the participants. Sport and exercise psychologists view physical activity in several different ways: physical activity as a tool for health, physical activity as a tool for human potential, and physical activity as a tool for social change. This aspect of psychology may be the most important aspect of physical activity, because of the contributions of exercise and sport psychology to health, human potential, and social change.
