Is learning a new skill really as easy as 1,2,3,4? According to Kaufman and his TED Talk, “The First Twenty Hours—How to Learn Anything” it is possible to learn anything in four easy steps. Whether it be a sport, learning to play an instrument or learning how to draw, Kaufman shows that anything can be learned by anyone. By applying Kaufman’s method of how to learn a new skill, it is now possible for someone to learn how to play the piano in 20 hours by following his four steps. In “The First Twenty Hours—How to Learn Anything” Kaufman shows that anyone can learn anything just by having 20 hours of focused practice and following his four steps. The four steps begin with the task of deconstructing the skill, meaning that you first have to …show more content…
I then come to the conclusion that someone can learn how to play the piano in 20 hours by applying Kaufman’s four steps. The first step to achieving this is deconstructing the skill. During this first step you should find out what the necessary components are to obtain the skill you are trying to learn. With piano, it is important to deconstruct the skill by finding out what the major factors are that contribute to properly playing it correctly. One of the most important things someone should know is what the correct posture and hand positions are when you are playing piano. Although they do not seem important, they are two factors that can eventually make or break your performance. When playing piano one should have their feet flat on the ground pointing straight forward so that you are able to move your feet to press on and off of the pedals, one should as well be sitting straight and relaxed without hunching, and your hands should be directly on the keys without your having to stretch forward to reach them. This is an important part of learning how to play piano because without having the right, firm, relaxed, and straight posture, your performance won’t be done correctly. It is also important to know the hand positions when learning piano. It is important to know that when playing, one should use the side of their finger and not the point. Your …show more content…
With this step one should first look into getting some resources to learn enough about the skill. A resource that attributes to learning how to play the piano includes sheet music, which can help someone visually understand what different keys, pitches, and chords look like to be able to distinguish and identify them. Another resource that can be of value can either be an instruction book that shows you all the steps that involve learning how to play piano, or if you are more of a visual learner, a video can be of useful help too as it illustrates the different steps and maneuvers that come with playing piano. With having these resources and learning enough from them about the skill that you are trying to attain, it is possible to now self-correct. This means that you can now either catch your own mistakes when you accidently press on the wrong key, or you are on the wrong pitch or tune so that you are able to correct it and adjust so that the piece is being played correctly. Learning enough to self-correct is key when learning a new skill, as without knowing and catching your mistakes there will be no room for
The first way to perfect your practicing is to seek out private instruction. I accomplished this by taking the basic piano class at Coe-Brown Northwood Academy. An instructor helps you learn better because they have previous experience with instruments, and they can help you if you do not understand a concept. The second way to practice is to write out a schedule to practice the fundamentals of music every day. This is especially important because if you cannot play the basics in piano, like scales and chords, then you will not be able to advance onto more difficult pieces. I did this by creating a practice schedule where the first thing I do when I practice the piano is to spend a little bit of time on each of the scales that I have previously learned. This helps me to remember each of the scales, and it makes it easier when I learn a new one. After I practice my scales, I review each of the chords that I have learned, and I play a few of the more recent songs that I have learned. This practice schedule helps me to perfect my scales, and it keeps me working on the fundamentals of piano playing, something that is very important.
From infancy to adulthood, organisms are always learning. The conscious and the subconscious are taking in information and sorting it, discarding irrelevant information and storing the relevant. The most common mode of gaining knowledge is through repetitions and memorization. These methods are effective for knowing exact definitions but do not develop understanding. In O Americano Outra Vez, Richard Feynman describes his teaching experiences while at the Brazilian Center for Physical Research. There he discovers the flaw in the modern education system, students are memorizing material but are unable to apply it to a real life scenarios, demonstrating they are gaining knowledge but not understanding it. Similar to Feynman’s Brazilian class,
The idea that practice makes perfect has been heard through the years of a majority of individual’s life. In Malcolm Gladwell’s book, Outliers, he ultimately states that a specific number of hours someone needs to practice before they can become successful. Gladwell is not completely wrong; however, his strong claim and evidences for the 10,000 hour rule can be proven false. Many researchers have looked into lives of successful people and people who aren’t as successful. Among their research they have also conducted surveys giving them a chance to compare the hours of practice between individuals. Through this it is concluded
I found Kolb's (1984) model of experiential learning a useful way to summarize the process if individual learning. The cycle begins when we each experience the world through our senses. Kolb calls this step ‘concreate experience', to indicate that he does not mean the various experiences we have through books or plays, but real-world experiences. Examples of concrete experience could be as varied as sitting through a boring meeting or suffering the distress of losing a job. Kolb suggest that to learn from our experiences we must engage in a second step of consistency reflecting on what has occurred. This step he calls ‘reflective observation'. We are able to reflect on much less than what occurred in the actual experience. Reflection is selective and influenced by our expectations. The third step in the learning cycle is making sense of what we have experience. In other words, ‘abstract conceptualization'. The final step in Kolb's model is ‘active experimentation'. At this step, we test out the meaning that we have constructed by taking action in the world – which then leads to new experiences. Kolb has shown that over time we tend to get more proficient at some steps of the process that at others, thus we develop a learning style preference. Kolb has noted all the steps are necessary, the smallest alteration to any of these steps can make the learning process less
The Natural Human Learning Process is a process that the brain goes through when learning different skills. According to Dr. Smilkstein’s this process is divided into six steps. The first step is the motivation stage. This step is when the brain begins to gain the desire to do something for many different reasons. Sometimes, she says, we learn things because we feel as though “we have too”. The second step is the beginning practice step. This is the trial and error stage. The third step is the advanced practice stage, where you start doing the action over and over. The fourth step is the skillfulness stage, where you are starting to get really good at what you’re doing. You become more confident about your skill in this stage. The skill starts to become natural because the skill has been tried over continuously. The fifth step is the refinement stage. In this step you start to experiment with doing different things. For example the ingredients might change if the skill is cooking. In the last step mastery, is when the skill is able to be taught to others (Smilkstein).
...ents somewhere in the learning realm that can be made, whether it is changing one style or all styles, the capacity of how a human learns will never be full.
What does it mean to learn a new skill and go from "novice" to "expert"?
Who would have ever thought taking a college course would require one to learn how to learn? It is a good concept we normally undergo at a very young age. At the pre-school age one will find children learning their strength and weakness through their playtime. As adults we almost forget we have to learn how to learn to continue growth in our workplace, school, and in life. In our second week of online classes I learned strengths and weakness in my learning style with the aid of learning assessments, personality spectrums, and time management logs. In this paper, I intend to describe the various components of my learning style and outline a plan to improve my time management and study skills.
Reflecting back on how every human has the capacity to learn once born caused my understanding of the meaning of learning to
Notice I have been using the word “learn” often. This is because we can only learn when everything is new. The definition of learn is “to acquire knowledge of or skill by instruction, s...
All of this implies a sound knowledge in music theory, ear training, musical analysis, music history, and proficiency in piano as the fundamental skills for most professional musicians. So far, I feel proud that the courses on these subjects have been a success for me. For example, I am thrilled not only for being able to play piano with fluency, but also because such proficiency is a key aspect of being a complete musician. In addition, I have experienced a pleasant surprise in music theory not only for understanding the subject matter we are covering, but also pushing the boundaries of what we can achieve with the fundamentals of music, going as far as to have the theory teacher assistant call me “ambitious” for my work. Finally, during the placement exams of ear training at the beginning of the semester, my tested skills were proficient enough to pass three semesters of the
I will start by explaining the methods that make it easier for me to know my characters and skills. The first method is self-knowledge (McBride, 2010). Self-knowledge is “knowledge or understanding of one 's own capabilities, character, feelings, or motivations” (Merriam Webster, 2015). I believe the foundational element in achieving my personal and professional success is being knowledgeable about myself. Self-development starts with self-understanding. When the individuals recognize their own personality, social and emotional intelligence, strengths and abilities, it makes easy to improve their performance, address the gaps in their competencies and build around their strengths (Fallon, Begun & Riley, 2013). Self-knowledge is the way that assists me in scrutinizing my behaviors and attitudes and being more recognizable about my strengths and weaknesses traits.
...ombining three key points, which are practice, talent, and opportunities. By putting a great amount of hours into practicing a certain skill people are bound to succeed in mastering their certain skill. People are born with different talents. Individuals need to develop their talents because the more they develop their talents the more range they have in success. Lastly, people who have right opportunities can have success in any skill. Therefore, people should take “Ten Thousand Hour” rule and apply it to their own skills to become successful.
When you step back and look at the big picture of life, you will notice that the concept of learning plays an essential role in it. What you learn and how you learn is your key to life success and it can open a multitude of doors for you along the way. Learning, however, is routine and much like other activities that are routine such as brushing your teeth or eating meals, you begin to think less and less about what you are doing or how you have been doing it. I never actually put too much thought into how I learned or the origins of my learning experience, but after reflecting on the ideas I have been able to clearly identify the manners in which I have learned and how I can transform my learning experience
In a gym, for example, a man could have been training for 7 months to reach a 150 pound bench, while another man, who has come in to the gym for his very first time, comes and also benches 150 pounds. The man who was not able to bench 150 bounds on this first go had less skill than the man who came in for his first time and got it on his first try. It does not mean if a person does not possess a certain skill from the start, that they will never achieve it. It just means that people will have to do a little more work to get to that level of skill. Another example, is with reading. Some will be able to read an entire book in just one day, while others will need to repetitively keep read over and over again to get anywhere near the ability to read an entire book in one day. Skills are not only a thing people are born with, but something people could also
