I’m excited to move back to the Bay Area. Having spent the past 4 years in southern California, my network in the Bay Area mainly comprises of the people I’ve met through KIPP. Through the KIPP partnerships, I will be able to gain a network as well as receive support from a familiar network. I gained these skills while I served as the president of my sorority and as a Jumpstart corps member for a preschool classroom. Although I’m no longer the president, I find myself applying these skills constantly, especially while working with my students. I can fulfill multiple positions because I learned how to be versatile and help my board members and students fulfill their positions and meet their goals. I know the boundary between being an authoritative figure and a friend to not only enforce the norms, but also to make sure people are open to learning from each other and me. As a leader and educator, I make sure to not only lead, but also to include the voices of the people around me. I know how to prioritize duties in order to plan efficiently and effectively for meetings, events, and lessons. I think quickly on my feet, which allows me to not only come up with a solution quickly, but multiple solutions. It has helped me solve conflicts between people and help engage both sorority members and students. As a leader and now an associate member, I am dedicated to improving my sorority and helping our members become the best versions of themselves. As a Jumpstart corps member, I am passionate about helping our students develop their literacy skills. There were classes that I enrolled in because they were required. At first, I had very little interest in those classes. However, some of the classes were my favorite classes I’ve taken at UCI. Elementary mathematics was where I turned my dislike and struggle with math to love and understanding of math. Out of school learning broadened my outlook not only on after school learning, but also on equal educational opportunities. Although I would prefer an opportunity in the education field, I am very open and willing to take on another opportunity that I might not have considered, but could be a great fit for me. I think experiences are very important for individual development. I only hope to grow as a person and become even more aware and educated about the community I live

Before taking the StrengthsFinder® assessment I didn’t know what type of leader I was, but I felt I had leadership traits that I could not describe. After answering several questions from the Clifton StrengthsFinder® 2.0, I found out my top five strengths. These strengths consist of individualization, arranger, learner, input and responsibility. The purpose of this paper is to go over my top five strengths to talk about which four domains of leadership these strengths fall under, how class material is applied, and the actions to best utilize my strengths.
I was recently accepted into the Exploratory Studies college at NC State, and am beyond excited to hopefully continue my academic career at NC State University. Although I am currently undecided on my major, I've shown the most interest in math and science related subjects, and hope to pursue similar avenues of study at State through the Exploratory Studies program. I am interested in exploring different career paths that I may have not yet considered, and believe that this program will provide me with the resources necessary to truly discover what I want to do for the rest of my life. Although I currently do not have any specific career objectives, I am confident that I will leave NC State prepared to build a successful career, regardless of my eventual major. I am excited at how much NC State and the Exploratory Studies college has to offer, and hope to eventually graduate with the experience and knowledge to begin a professional career.
I have often wondered what it would be like to experience the freedom of choosing my own class schedule. This has to be infinitely more stimulating and enjoyable. I am also aware that college will be significantly more challenging, but I have always found it easier to study for a class that interests me. I am willing to accept the fact that as long as I am in school, there will be required courses which may not engender excitement or enthusiasm; however, success should not be as difficult to achieve due to the maturity that is developing during this last year of high school. In addition, I have gained an understanding of the benefit of being well rounded. There is value in all classes taken. It helps to know that even my least favorite subject will contribute to the ultimate goal of personal and career development.
While in Junior High School and High School I have seen my teachers use humor, clarity (in their instruction) directness, and how an open mind can help me as a learner deepen my understanding of what a leader is and should strive to be.
Sure, Math, Science and English courses are important; I must argue that a balance between these and courses of personal interest may increase student productivity and learning. I enjoy most subjects simply because I value expanding my knowledge and learning how to better my own intellect. One subject I hated and most students normally do is Math, I have experienced a few incredibly awful math teachers that resulted in my just not wanting to be there. One of my math teachers made it so difficult to even sit through one of her classes, that I would desperately text my mom to “call me out” to help me escape that class. Given that I resented the teacher and hated everything about that class this mindset lead me to loose motivation and drive to progress myself. Proactively seeking solutions to improve my situation and aid in my learning process was paramount. I felt a schedule change would be in my best interest, however I was met with a giant brick wall. Too many students in every class prevented me from this possibility. As Pre-Calculus is a required course, dropping or withdrawing were not options. So, what does one due in this situation? My only option at that point was to grin and bear it—endure the harassment and side comments on my behavior the teacher seemed to bestow. The lesson I gain, as I reminded myself often, is it will make me stronger and able to deal with difficult situations in the “real world.” The issue was I was not a behavioral problem; the curriculum was difficult and I honestly struggled and looked for help wherever it could be found. Unfortunately, she did not offer any assistance. If I had the option to switch teachers, take the class somewhere else, not have to take that specific class, then maybe my school experience that year would have been
It is Important to remain teachable before, during and after your leadership position. With leadership comes great responsibility. I have been blessed with a great work ethic, I was disciplined with as a Child and bringing it into my young adult years has helped me a lot. My passion has been in Early Childhood, my passion is what drives me to be the leader I want to be. Every leader should want to lead to where their followers surpass themselves.
One of the reasons for my dislike of high school is that I, like almost all other students, was required to take classes that were of no interest to me, whatsoever. Sure, there were classes that I partially enjoyed but that enjoyment quickly evaporated after a short while. At the time, I really wished I had the opportunity to “pick and choose” classes that I wanted to take. I thought it would all change when I started college. In ways it has. I am now able to choose classes I am most interested in, but I am also required to take elective and other classes that are unrelated to my major. Though, now, I am not so against it. I have actually enjoyed taking unrelated classes. This is because I have learned that there are, in fact, multiple benefits of taking classes outside of a major. Required classes are beneficial because they allow a student to discover unknown interests, gain a wider area of knowledge and expertise, as well as it gives that student the ability to use an area of knowledge from one area to aid in another.
Some of these skills include my ability to make decisions, my adaptability, and my initiative. All entrepreneurs need to make decisions, it is the only way that they are going to achieve anything in their venture; they cannot rely on others all the time to make decisions for them. As a member of many leadership clubs and councils within the school community, I am often tasked with making decisions through the process of listening to everyone’s opinions, reasoning with others, and going with gut decisions. This was seen specifically in the Yearbook Committee, where tough decisions were constantly being made by me—such as whether or not content should be included in the yearbook or whether or not specific pages should be published—that have certainly led to a better outcome. Adaptability is also one of the most important skills that an entrepreneur should possess; nothing in life is ever perfect and entrepreneurs should be able to adapt on the fly without losing faith or perseverance. I show adaptability by always keeping a flexible schedule in life and ensuring that I have a high tolerance for the events that happen in my life. By having a flexible schedule, I can prepare for change at any time, allowing others to work well with me. By having a high tolerance, it allows me to be accepting of other people’s opinions and willing to move away from
The skills approach to leadership focuses on what a leader can accomplish. Katz (as cited in Northouse, 2013) identified two skills for lower level managers. The skills are is technical and interpersonal proficiency demonstrating the ability to work with things and people. Katz included a third skill, conceptual, but stated its relevance to high level managers. Petkevičiūtė and Giedraitis (2013) concur with Katz that first level managers 1) run day to day operations which need less conceptual skills and 2) technical and human skills are critical for business success. Thus, conceptual skills are not part of the discussion on skills. The skills most applicable to the managers’ position will be discussed.
In a business organization, a leadership role is often characterized by a person who has the core ability to plan, implement, delegate, oversee, influence, and empower other employees toward a specific company goal. The character of a strong leader should have dominant personality traits to execute taught skill sets. For someone to take on a leading title they must not only be capable of taking on highly important responsibilities, but on average a successful leader is only eligible for the task when they can also easily influence others to follower their direction. A person must be able to persuade and influence people naturally, and the person is much more successful when they have confidence in themselves, and in their ideas and ability, all of which are visible. Additional skills are obtained through training to enhance the talent of instructing others in an effective manner.

First being public speaking, Which is imperative to have as a skill because you never know when you will have to do it, and if a time comes and you are comfortable, it is very noticeable and everything goes smoothly. My Very first time standing up in front of the entire teen conference I was a little shaky and did not like the fact that all eyes were on me. After about three or four times I felt very comfortable and the shakes went away.
