In the early stages of American history, life was not all it seemed cut out to be; and under any circumstances, integrating into a new lifestyle is difficult. John Downe, a British immigrant, writes a letter to his wife hoping to persuade her to join him in America. Downe uses heavy logos, pathos, and juxtaposition in his argument. The beginning paragraph is written with details about his daily life in New York, mainly focusing on the cheap and accessible food. He also uses the mention of “English money” to further his claims, “And I can have a barrel of cider holding 32 gallons, for 4s… And I can have 100 lbs. Of Beef for 10s. English money.” Downe’s repetitive and extensive descriptions of the food in America relates to the fact that this …show more content…
In fact, he directly compares America and England to one another, “America is not like England, for here no man thinks himself your superior.” He also claims that “this is a country where a man can stand as a man, and where he can enjoy the fruits of his own exertions, with rational liberty to its fullest extent.” Finishing off his letter to his wife, Downe uses perhaps the biggest exaggeration of it all. “Poverty is unknown here. You see no beggars.” The main reason for his fleeing of England was to escape the immense poverty that swallowed England. This hyperbolic statement portrays America in a luxurious light, making it seem as if life in America has no faults. The purpose of John Downe’s letter to his wife was to tell her about all the great things America has to offer in order to persuade her to join him in America. By using logos, pathos, and juxtaposition, he makes his argument stronger. Sukey is unaware of America and the daily life of the people, so she could be easily convinced to do so. The prosperity and promise that America has to offer is the biggest point John Downe tries to get across to his wife Sukey, so that their family can be reunited once
“The Onion’s” mock press release on the MagnaSoles satirical article effectively attacks the rhetorical devices, ethos and logos, used by companies to demonstrate how far advertisers will go to convince people to buy their products. It does this by using manipulative, “scientific-sounding" terminology, comparisons, fabrication, and hyperboles.
In 102 Minutes, Chapter 7, authors Dwyer and Flynn use ethos, logos, and pathos to appeal to the readers’ consciences, minds and hearts regarding what happened to the people inside the Twin Towers on 9/11. Of particular interest are the following uses of the three appeals.

Along with rhetorical appeals, Wiesel also uses many rhetorical devices such as parallelism and anaphora. Wiesel depicts parallelism when he says, “to fight fascism, to fight dictatorship, to fight Hitler” (Wiesel lines 103-104). The parallelism and anaphora, in the quote, provide emphasis on the discrimination and abuse that has taken place around the world. Repeating the same initial phrase shows the significance of the words Wiesel is speaking. Wiesel mentions the victims of this extreme tragedy when he states,” for the children in the world, for the homeless for the victims of injustice, the victims of destiny and society.” (Wiesel lines 17-19). This use of anaphora and parallelism emphasize the amount of people the Holocaust has affected and impacted. The parallelism being used adds value to his opinions and balances the list of people Wiesel is making in his speech.
The essay "Nature" by Ralph Waldo Emerson implements the use of many transcendentalist ideas through the use of strong rhetorical language. The core belief of transcendentalism is self-reliance and independence, and it stresses the importance that people need to do things on their own. Emerson uses irony to point out many latent truths about the concept. He also uses personification to show that the world around someone can have qualities of a human. Metaphors are also used heavily in the essay as catalysts to help the reader better understand Transcendentalism.
Michel-Guillaume-Jean de Crevecoeur was a French born citizen who moved to New York and became a naturalized citizen of Great Britain. After living in America as a citizen for a while, Crevecoeur decided to write an essay titled “Letters from an American Farmer”. During this time, tensions in America between the colonists and loyalists were increasing, and because of this the idea of America as a sovereign nation and territory was becoming popular. Crevecoeur wrote this essay in order to discuss what it means to be an American, and why people should be honored to be called an American. Crevecoeur believes that America is a melting pot of the world, and is full of opportunities for anyone who lives there. In order to back up his claim, Crevecoeur uses rhetorical devices, especially pathos, while he does also use ethos and logos as well.
The tone of the short story “America and I” changed dramatically over the course of the narrative. The author, Anzia Yezierska, started the story with a hopeful and anxious tone. She was so enthusiastic about arriving in America and finding her dream. Yezierska felt her “heart and soul pregnant with the unlived lives of generations clamouring for expression.” Her dream was to be free from the monotonous work for living that she experienced back in her homeland. To be concise, Jurgis and his family faced various challenges in America. As a result, their lives changed, for better or for worse. They were inexperienced, and therefore made many mistakes, which made their life in Chicago very worrisome. However, their ideology and strong belief in determination and hard work kept them alive. In a land swarming with predators, this family of delicate prey found their place and made the best of it, despite the fact that America, a somewhat disarranged and hazardous jungle, was not the wholesome promise-land they had predicted it to be.
Pollan’s article provides a solid base to the conversation, defining what to do in order to eat healthy. Holding this concept of eating healthy, Joe Pinsker in “Why So Many Rich Kids Come to Enjoy the Taste of Healthier Foods” enters into the conversation and questions the connection of difference in families’ income and how healthy children eat (129-132). He argues that how much families earn largely affect how healthy children eat — income is one of the most important factors preventing people from eating healthy (129-132). In his article, Pinsker utilizes a study done by Caitlin Daniel to illustrate that level of income does affect children’s diet (130). Living in America can result in a life just as good if not better than living elsewhere. It sometimes sounds almost as if Crevecoeur is writing an advertisement for the American colonies with his sweeping complements. Perhaps he wanted to encourage Europe to adopt a more American mindset. Comparing these to the known realities and experiences of Europe helps the European reader to more clearly understand the differences between Europe and America. The distinctions he draws present a positive view of American life. Scientist, politician and inventor Benjamin Franklin, and politician and philosopher Thomas Paine collaborated during the 18th century to give each other feedback on their writings. This letter in particular is a response from Franklin to one of Paine’s essays advocating a providential God. We can find in this letter, that Franklin was not very fond of the essay Paine proposed to him. He conveys advice to Paine by saying that his disbelief in a providential God makes no sense and is not logical. Franklins response contains metaphors, rhetorical strategies, and appeals throughout his letter to make his message back to Paine more effective, in hopes of discouraging him to publish his writing.
St Jean de Crevecoeur, was an emigrant of Europe. Crevecoeur, had no desire to go back to the land in which his forefathers had lived. He was going to a more diverse way of living “where all races melted into new race of man.” (pg 308) He believed America was a place to go to be a free man, “who leaving behind him all his ancient prejudices and manners, that he receives new ones from the new mode of life he has embraced, the new government he obeys, and the new rank he hold.”(pg 308) Crevecoeur knew that his life as a new man would entail new ideas and new opinions. Hoping that the new laws protect him, “from involuntary idleness, servile dependence, penury and useless labor, he has passed to tolls of very different nature, rewarded by ample subsistence.” (pg 308) Crevecoeur lived the life of a free man in which he was paid for his labors, he owned land and was a farmer. His view of an American, “is a new man, who acts upon new principles; he must therefore entertain new ideas, and form new opinions.” (pg 308)
