Attention Students: Put Your Laptops Away
In the article, “Attention Students: Put Your Laptops Away” by James Doubek, he explains and proves with evidence and reasoning how taking notes the old fashioned way can be more beneficial than taking then with an electronic device to a student. He does so by including three methods. These methods were credibility, logic and emotion. When done reading this, you, the reader, will understand how he uses these methods.
He pulls the reader in by stating, “In the study published in Psychological Science, Pam A. Mueller of Princeton University and Daniel M. Oppenheimer of the University of California, Los Angeles sought to test how note-taking by hand or by computer affects learning,” (1). By saying that, he gives credible evidence that supports his article. He proves that he does not just assume note-taking by hand or by computer affects learning, there are very well suited, educated people that took place in this study; those people being, Pam A. He gives the reader facts about the study that took place. Although, he did not find this evidence, he makes the reader knowledgeable of the findings. Some of those facts were… note-taking can be either generative or non-generative, which means that it is either paraphrased and summarized or it is taken word for word. The study, also, shows that students who took notes by computer typed a significant amount more than that by hand. James says that the experiment proved that students who did take notes by hand remembered a lot more than the students who took notes by typing. Not only were the differences the same in our country but in a few others as well, Japan and Sweden did the same study and ended up with the same results.
