In the New York Times article “Leave your laptops at the door to my classroom” written by Darren Rosenblum he explains why he prohibits the use of laptops in his college classroom. Rosenblum observed a senior colleague’s class and his class to discover that laptops are blocking the classroom connection between the teacher and student. Rosenblum noticed that laptops reduced a student’s education and it has become a distraction rather than allowing students to critically think and learn challenging and uncomfortable things. He believed there are two skills needed to succeed, listening and communicating, but with students using laptops it killed the connection when it was time to being listening and communicating with care. Growing up participation was one of three or four of the major grading categories teachers would use to grade us on, but with the use of a laptop it'll be hard to get a good grade within this category. Throughout the course of my first and second year of college I've tested using my laptop in many different classes. For example, I tried to use my laptop during my sociology class, but that didn't workout for me. Throughout the duration of the class I would use my laptop to take notes and of course doing other things, I had no business doing during class. When it was to contribute during class discussion we would put our laptops to the side to begin discussion. Although we had to put or laptops to the side, I noticed it was harder for the students who were using their laptops during the class to sufficiently contribute to the discussion. For the students who took handwritten notes it was easier for them to contribute to the class discussion, and actually know what they were discussing about. The separation between the two note takers are people who do handwritten notes put the teachers information into their own context. Meanwhile, people who type their notes tend to just type what they're hearing. Therefore, I decided to stop bringing my laptop to sociology, and I noticed a change in my learning. In the story, “New Class(room) War: Teacher Versus Technology” by Samuel Freedman is about a teacher name Ali Nazemi that created a policy regarding no technology because the students are not paying attention anymore in class. Freedman’s states that, “Their perpetual war of attrition with defiantly inattentive students has escalated from the quaint pursuits of pigtail-pulling, spitball-lobbing and notebook-doodling to a high-tech arsenal of laptops, cellphones, Blackberries and the like”
Over the past few decades technology has advanced quite a bit. The use of calculators, computers, and other techniques in many fields has increased significantly. In a large scale, technology is replacing the method of instruction in the field of education. Many people believe that adopting technology in learning process can increase productivity. However, David Gelernter, who is a professor at Yale University as well as a leading figure in the field of technology, suggests to limit the use of technology in the classroom in his article “Unplugged: The Myth of Computers in the Classroom” which was published in the New Republic magazine in 1994. In this article he offers well illustrated analysis which makes the readers to regulate the use of technology in the classroom. He thinks that the technology comes in a way of building strong foundation of basic skills. He insists that computers should be used to aid the learning process, not to replace cognitive thinking.
In the article, “Attention, Students: Put Your Laptops Away,” the writer tells the reader differences between taking notes with a laptop or taking them in a notebook. When taking notes with a laptop people have the tendency to write down everything word for word while others cannot help but click a new tab and get on social media. Taking notes word for word has been proven that you do not comprehend what you are writing down. "When people type their notes, they have this tendency to try to take verbatim notes and write down as much of the lecture as they can," Mueller tells NPR's Rachel Martin. David Gelernter author of the essay, “Unplugged: The Myth of Computers in the Classroom,” used some rhetorical appeals but not many in his essay, whilst trying to logically persuade his audience that computers could be utilized in the classroom, but under certain stipulations. Gelernter has great credibility for speaking on education and technology, as he is a professor of computer science at Yale University, so he more than anyone should know the outcomes of using a computer as a tool while teaching. However, when it comes to technology a lot of older generations usually are pretty biased when discussing technologies advancements, Gelernter still had some very good points! Using computers while teaching our young children can be useful but with strict moderations; when, where, and why, because if not heavily monitored, computers could be extremely detrimental to the learning experience and processes for many students.

Instead, they have class discussions and are able to stay focused on the topic and their ideas and conversations flourish. He believes that the use of devices and being distracted with personal alerts or interesting, not relative advertisements is like drunken multitasking.
Since I was young I can always remember writing everything down by hand and it was the only effective way to take notes, but as the years went on technology advanced and I saw more people doing taking notes differently, yet I couldn’t change the way I was used to taking notes. In my little hometown in Cuba, we were taught to write the most important things down and then review them for any test. As I grew up I got so used to that style that to this day I still follow that habit since they have gotten me far in all of my tests and classes.

Mueller of Princeton University and Daniel M. Oppenheimer of the University of California, conducted research on notetaking. They concluded that taking notes by hand help with memorization more than taking notes via computer. This is because when taking notes by hand you have to process the things that you are writing because you cannot afford to write everything that the teacher says.
