One of the most complicated aspects of parenthood is learning how to calm down an upset or anxious child. Sometimes it is a matter of feeding them, rocking them to bed, or something very similar. However, for Isabella Jimenez’s family, the remedy for her when she was feeling feisty was to set her down in front of her older brother’s soccer game and let the calm come over her as she was consumed by the game. Isabella Jimenez started playing the game of soccer at four years old and quickly found an undying love for the competition, adrenaline, happiness, sadness, and all other ranges of emotion that come with the game. With strong motivators coming from the sole ability to play the game as a healthy athlete and the various opportunities that …show more content…
she has been given, Jimenez has claimed several accomplishments throughout her soccer career. More importantly than her health and the opportunities that she’s been given, there is one person in particular who has impacted her and her journey. Isabella’s mother raised her and her brother as a single mother. The family worked through the trials, the endless practices, the financial burdens, and each and every soccer game. “I play because I think I have been put here for a reason and for my family; for my mom… I play for her.” Born and raised in Albuquerque, Jimenez couldn’t see herself leaving Albuquerque and missing out on her family’s infamous Sunday night family dinners to attend another university.
With family being so important to her, she walked out of Albuquerque High School and onto the University of New Mexico. Since the start of her collegiate career, her passion and drive hasn’t wavered. On September 13, 2015, Jimenez made her first collegiate career start in a matchup against Michigan State and her talent led her to becoming an essential part of the Lobos’ back four. She continued on to impress in the rest of her redshirt freshman and sophomore seasons; little did she know that her redshirt junior season would have so much in store for her. Jimenez was one member on a team that made impressive strides this past season. Following an intense quarter-final game against Fresno State, the Lobos played San Jose State where Jimenez blocked a shot on goal to save their game and give them the opportunity to move onto the championship game. She then topped off the game by making her first collegiate goal in the penalty kicks which won the Lobos the game and sent them to the championship. What a wonderful way to end the …show more content…
season. Although Jimenez has the opportunity to play with the Lobos for another season, her collegiate career has come to an end so that her future career can begin. Jimenez is majoring in medical laboratory sciences with the ultimate goal of graduating from medical school with a specialty that she isn’t quite certain of yet. She would love to continue her soccer career with the Lobos but with semester-long clinical rotations approaching, she had to choose one. She couldn’t be more grateful to have had this past season be her final season though. As a New Mexico native, Isabella Jimenez feels very passionately about her home and her alma mater.
She is “...very prideful to be a Lobo. Wearing the symbol around and wearing ‘New Mexico’ on [her] shirt, gives [her] a lot of joy and pride inside. It’s held to a very high respect.” That pride sparked at a young age when she and her family would attend UNM sporting events and see UNM student-athletes around the city. It started as a spark and has become a fiery passion within her. In the midst of trials that the women’s soccer team has faced in recent years, Jimenez has been able to see how much support she has behind her in terms of supporters, fans, and donors. “It means everything.” That is a message she wants to share to the people who cheer valiantly, with genuine love and pride in their hearts for Jimenez and her
team. “Thank you so much. I am filled with so much gratitude for everything you do. The littlest amount of support goes a long way.”

So, today I will talk about Alex’s career, her childhood, and finally her teams.
La Mirada offered organized ball on a year-round basis. Jennie joined her first league, L’il Miss T-Ball, after her fifth birthday. She was one of those kids who excelled at a number of sports, but her greatest love was always for baseball. Bev and Doug soon began channeling this passion almost exclusively into girls’ softball. Their daughter had good hand-eye coordination and excellent speed. But it was her arm that opened the most eyes. During winter vacation in Iowa one year, she celebrated her first snowfall by packing a snowball and literally heaving it out of sight.
In 1991 there was so little media interest in the event, almost no one even knew the United States had a team, and even less people knew that the United States won. Eight years later, “tickets sales reached 388,000,” more than triple the amount of sales in the 1995 Women’s World Cup (Longman). FIFA was depending on this World Cup to gain popularity, they needed more interest to spark people to play. If the United States had not won, it was predicted that not many in the suburban would not have much interest in soccer. Millions of young girls across the United States came to this event. After the World Cup it “will celebrate the explosive growth of soccer for women in the United States, where 7.5 million female players are registered, according to a recent survey by the Soccer Industry Council of America, a trade group. In suburbia, where the game flourishes, girls' soccer has become as popular as sport utility vehicles” (Longman). This World Cup team changed the perspective that soccer was only for males. “‘ We're fighting the myths and prejudices that women's soccer felt in the U.S. in the 70's,'' said Andrea Rodebaugh… 'That there are sports for boys and sports for girls and that soccer is not for girls, not feminine’” (Longman). This team changed the lives for many girls. The team gave little girls hope and faith they could make it in soccer. This team made them believe they could follow their passions.
Tan includes a direct quote from her mother in paragraph six of the reading, and she does not shorten it for an important reason. Tan decides to keep the entire quote instead of paraphrasing to add an effect that a reader can only understand with the full quote. It shows that even though some people speak the language of English it is hard for others to understand based on the person’s full understanding and comprehension of the language. In Tan’s case she is used to the way her mother speaks and uses the language, but to others it is almost impossible to understand. If it were not for Tan summarizing what the quote meant before putting it in the text, few readers would have understood what the mother was trying to convey with her use of the language. Tan’s strategy in including this direct quotation is to show that language differs from person to person even if they all speak the same language. She is implying that the whole world could speak English; however, it would not be the same type of English because of how everyone learns and how others around
Formally, an immigrant can be defined as “a person who comes to live permanently in a foreign country.” But in some cases, there has been people like Cesar Chavez who have made a difference in history as an immigrant. Unfortunately, there are those who are not as lucky as Cesar Chavez and end up getting deported just like what happened in Operation Wetback in 1942. Now, they have made a way for immigrants to become U.S. citizens by taking the citizenship test. However, Donald Trump is one of the many people attempting to keep immigrants as far away from the U.S. Border laws are also another one of the many reasons why not many immigrants get the chance to enter this country because in many ways the laws that surround the border are in some ways unfair and not really the best. Immigration still remains a problem in our country
Have you ever felt stuck? Wherever you are, it’s the absolute last place you want to be. In the book Into the Wild, Chris McCandless feels stuck just like the average everyday person may feel. Chris finds his escape plan to the situation and feels he will free himself by going off to the wild. I agree with the author that Chris McCandless wasn’t a crazy person, a sociopath, or an outcast because he got along with many people very well, but he did seem somewhat incompetent, even though he survived for quite some time.
Hope Amelia Solo was born on the 30th of July in 1981 in Richland, Washington. As a young child, she was a forward for a soccer team and showed amazing potential at a young age. She scored 109 goals while in this position and was peerless. Her real career did not start until her high school years which led to her being named an All-American twice by Parade magazine. Her college accomplishments led to her being named to the 2004 Olympic team (“Hope” 1). Hope attended the Univeristy of Washington for all four years of her college career. While in college, she earned NSCAA All-American honors in her last three years. Not knowing how to speak English can be the worst possible thing a person can experience in his or her lifetime. Not being able to understand and speak makes very difficult for a person to express his or her thoughts and feelings. Some individuals might think that these individuals are uneducated because of the way they pronounce certain words, but that is not true. They are treated differently; they are not appreciated because of the way they speak. Some people do not even take the time of their day to try to understand these individuals. They do not know how it feels to not being able to speak another language properly because they never tried. Individuals that are trying to speak English should not penalize by others, for not learning how
What would you do if one of your fellow employees was found dead, and suspected to have been murdered; only an hour or so after you had just seen him? What would be going through your mind when the police show up at your door asking you to come down to the station for questioning? Well this was the current predicament of Andrea Saunters, as she sat alone in the interrogation room of the Santa Barbara police station, left to reflect upon the events of the day, feeling the pain of the loss of a friend and co-worker as well as the fear from being a suspect in the case. *Flashback, the day earlier; POV of Narrator* It was Friday the 24th of April, 2015, and the day started as any other from Andrea Saunters.
Both of these guys are considered heroes by many people. Most people think being a hero is saving lives or having super powers, but that’s not the case with Jay Moriarity. Yes beowulf did save many lives, but there’s a lot more to being a hero than most people think.
The death of John Wright, to some, might seem tragic and unacceptable, but for one person in particular, Minnie Wright, it was beautiful and freeing. When you are oppressed and treated poorly your entire life, and your husband takes away everything that you hold dear, then something has to give. Can justice has been served in an unusual way? With the help of Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters, Minnie just might get away with serving up her slice of justice.
I have had the great pleasure of knowing Maya for the past 7 years as a player and now as a tennis instructor in my program. She trained with our Academy for 3 years before moving on to compete for the University of Texas women’s tennis team. In my twenty years of coaching experience, I have come across very few individuals like Maya. As player she exhibited the dedication, discipline, strong work ethic, and positive attitude that propelled her to become a great student athlete and has now made her an asset to our coaching staff. She has also learned to fight for what she wants, and that same tenacity will push her to succeed academically and professionally in the field of public health.
The amazing game of soccer is played on every continent, and is the world’s most popular sport. It is proven to be one of the number one sports to be played and watched. Because its fans and players are so dedicated, the sport continues to grow. Requiring only a ball and open space, the activity is available to anyone, whether rich or poor, male or female, athletic or not. Over the years, soccer has won the hearts of many because of its unique history, many benefits, and notable achievements.
The whistle blew and the game was over. We were finally the champions in the interscholastic soccer tournament. Sheer joy and a sense of achievement took over as I reveled in the glory of our team’s victory. Soccer is a passion for me, and has been an integral part of my life since I was eight years old. Playing soccer has taught me persistence, the ability to work hard and given me important lessons in the value of teamwork. Today, I understand how these lessons have helped me in my medical career.
In this essay I will be critically assessing Elizabeth Anderson’s proposal of racial integration to prove that while not perfect, it is one of the only options that seems to want to better society on a whole. I will first explain what Anderson’s proposal is and how each of her steps provides a positive outcome all the while arguing against obvious arguments that are against her. I will also look at how simply integrating within schools is not enough to better society, as well as Tommie Shelby’s argument that Anderson is not properly taking into account that some people of colour do not want to integrate. Concluding that some flaws in Anderson’s proposal must be rectified, but it is currently the most sensible solution. Elizabeth Anderson’s
