Maya Zein-El-Abdin is currently on staff at Westside Tennis Academy as a Junior Tennis Coach and I can assure you that she is undoubtedly one of the best young coaches in our Academy. Based on my experiences with Maya as a player and an employee over the years, I enthusiastically and fervently recommend Maya for admission into your graduate epidemiology program.
I am the Head Coach and Co-Owner of Westside Tennis Academy at the Westside Tennis and Fitness Club in Houston. The Westside Tennis Academy is one of the most comprehensive year-round junior tennis programs in the city, offering world class instruction and training to 85 young tennis players in the Houston area.
I have had the great pleasure of knowing Maya for the past 7 years as a player and now as a tennis instructor in my program. She trained with our Academy for 3 years before moving on to compete for the University of Texas women’s tennis team. In my twenty years of coaching experience, I have come across very few individuals like Maya. As player she exhibited the dedication, discipline, strong work ethic, and positive attitude that propelled her to become a great student athlete and has now made her an asset to our coaching staff. She has also learned to fight for what she wants, and that same tenacity will push her to succeed academically and professionally in the field of public health.
After graduating from college Maya chose to take a brief hiatus from academics and I was extremely proud and excited to bring her into our Academy as a coach. Because of her personal experiences as a top tennis player she is able to relate to her young students, motivating them to do their best. Maya easily relays her years of tennis knowledge in a way that is straightforward an...

...lls, and discovering new interests; all of which give her a unique perspective and make her a very distinctive and well rounded candidate. She has prepared herself to pursue a master’s degree in public health through academically, in conducting relevant research, and traveling abroad for a medical aid trip; showing her dedication in preparing for this path she has chosen. The many strengths Maya has cultivated over the years as a player and a coach will help her tremendously in her professional career; she has learned to handle with difficult situation with grace and composure and with more experience will grow to become an exemplary individual. Maya is a wonderful and compassionate young lady with an admirable work ethic, excellent communication skills and I can say without a doubt that she will establish herself as a positive force as a public health professional.
She led the team to a Conference championship and a State Championship. As a Senior she was the #1 player in the nation, averaged a triple double with 31 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists. For the second consecutive year in history, she led the team to a state championship and led the nation in scoring. All four years in high school she was selected to be on the all-state team, all-region team, and all-conference team. During the summers of her High School years she would continue practicing and playing for an AAU team.
Coaching is an integral part of helping achieve one’s maximum abilities. Dr. Gawande (2013) explains that, “Coaches are not teachers, but they teach. They’re not your boss—in professional tennis, golf, and skating, the athlete hires and fires the coach—but they can be bossy” (p. 3). It is difficult to say what is the exact function of a coach, however, they help bring forth another point of view different from our own and they also help bring about the right mindset in order to subdue a weakness.
One man, a musician by the name of Buddy Walker, saw Althea play one day and had a revolation. He figured that if Althea was so good at table tennis, then she would excel in regular tennis as well. At the time, no one realized just how beneficial this idea would be for the young Harlem girl, Althea Gibson. Through donations raised to pay for her membership and lessons, Althea became a member of an African American club called the Harlem Cosmopolitian Tennis Club. It was here that she aquired the skills needed to compete in tennis matches at a higher, more competative level.
Alejandra is a dynamic person of integrity, sincerity, and self-motivation. She was born in Nochistlan, Zacatecas. Her family moved to the U.S legally when she was two years old. At the age of three her father was no longer part of her life and her mother then became a single mother of five kids. Her mother struggled to make ends meet, working long and difficult hours, and earning only minimum wage. I know that Alejandra looks up to her mother and sister as role models as they have blazed the trial and shown Alejandra that she can accomplish great things in the face of extreme difficulty. Alejandra’s dream career is to become a registered nurse, and I am confident that she will not only become an RN, but that she will be one of the best nurses because of her diligence and intrinsic motivation. She is very competitive and always strives to do her best in everything...

As an outsider to the game I thought what could drive a person to sacrifice so much of their time to a sport. Many of the Varsity sports practice schedules were overshadowed by her rigorous training regiment. When I asked Hana, she replied

As part of my research, I took the liberty of interviewing a woman whom I have grown dearly close. I first met Ann when I was a little girl near the age of four just after I had discovered my love of ice skating. This love grew and eventually become somewhat of an obsession of mine; I looked up to Ann who was a Senior rated figure skating coach. I did not dream of going to the Olympics, rather I dreamt of becoming a coach like Ann.
In this manner, it is clear that these athletes are taking strides towards equality by affecting the future of our society, youth. Though as a society we face many remaining obstacles in striving toward gender equality in sport, it is important to look at what has been accomplished, and also look to the future for what can still be done.
Gawande talks about how he came up with the idea of hiring a coach to watch him perform surgery after an experience he had playing tennis. Years of playing the game and not improving, Gawande incidentally finds himself play tennis with a young man who is a tennis couch. The young man gives Gawande a tip about keeping his feet under his body when hitting the ball. At first he is uncertain, stating, “My serve had always been the best part of my game…..With a few minutes of tinkering, he’d added at least ten miles an hour to my serve. I was serving harder than I ever had in my life” (Gawande, 2011, p.3). Gawande is so greatly impacted by this experience that he decides to hire a coach to help him with is professional endeavors.
My love for tennis blossomed at the young age of eleven. During middle school my peers knew me as the boy who was remarkably talented at tennis and I savored that title. Butterflies floated throughout my youthful body whenever someone complimented me. As the years passed, my dad nurtured me into a top player. Before I knew it high school arrived and it was time to compete at a higher level. My excitement was out of this world, but I knew my dad could no longer push me forward and my future was up to me. However, the ego I developed over the years blocked what lie in front of me. I wasn’t looking at the bigger picture; the hard work demanded of me, teamwork, and the motivation to reach an ultimate goal. Throughout my four years of participating
Gender equality in sports is still an issue that will be dealt with many years to come. Great advancement has been made through history and accomplishments did not go unnoticed. There is the fear that Title IX, with time will not be as strong or it might be ignored with time. But it is also a powerful weapon that can be used in the legal system to make sure women have their rights protected and saved. We can say that female athletes have enjoyed the fruits of this law to provide them with confidence and empowerment. Although, some women athletes will still face adversity because of racism and ignorance, but looking back at the past decades the fight for gender equality is well worth the fight and determination.
