Is Social Media Hurtful, Or Beneficial To Our Society? When the topic of social media is brought up in our society, most teens would rave about how wonderful it is, or how much it has changed their lives. But is social media really a good thing to teens and young adults in our society? Social media is indeed not beneficial to our society, it is hurtful to the young people who have made it a part of their lives. It is hurtful because it consumes your life, it makes you rely on others for approval, and we are missing out on life’s experiences. Although, many of us assume we only use our phones for necessary tasks. To start, social media consumes our lives. It lets us believe that our lives are based on the internet and apps on our phones. Kerry Coppinger states in Phone Fetish: How Snapchat Is Ruining Your Life And You’re To Blame, “According to The Daily Mail, the average person reaches for his or her phone at about 7:31 am each morning, and checks the most important apps before he or she even gets out of bed.”, and “Most of us tend to use our phones about 1,500 times a week.” What she is trying to say is that we use our phones too much. We make checking our “important” social media’s our number one priority as soon as we wake up in the morning. When we should really be focusing on more important things for the day, like actually making it out of the house on time. In addition, Social media makes you rely on others for approval on what you are doing. Posting things to your snapchat story for example, daily is just you trying to let others know the cool stuff that you are doing on a daily basis. Kerry Coppinger also states, “This unfailing need we have for affirmation is tearing down our self-confidence, and making us feel we are worthless without the acceptance of others.” What she’s trying to explain is that without the approval from others, it makes us feel like we are worthless, and it lowers our self-confidence. Furthermore, social media makes you miss out on life’s experiences.
For example, when we see our favorite artists perform live at a concert, we focus too much on videotaping and posting things to snapchat that we miss out on the real experience. Coppinger also stated that, “we’re too preoccupied with proving ourselves to others.” What she means is that we are too caught up with showing others what we are up to instead of actually taking life’s experiences and enjoying them. Nevertheless, critics of social media haters will probably argue that we only use our phones for necessary tasks, but I maintain that social media is not beneficial to our lives because coppinger says “We ignore the amount of time we spend on apps like snapchat, and only recall all those important company emails we had to respond to. By this I mean that we only think of the important things as time we have spent on our phone when in reality most of the time spent is on useless social media apps. Ultimately what is at stake here is people’s lives being taken away by pointless apps, that don’t really let you connect with people on a personal level. But, overall social media is not beneficial to our society because it consumes your life, it makes you rely on others for approval, and we are missing out on all life
experiences.
In the article, “Disruptions: More Connected, Yet More Alone,” Charlene DeGuzman states, “It makes me sad that there are moments in our lives where, we’re not present because we’re looking at a phone.”An app is being developed to help people control their time on social media. This app would be a good tool for people who want to limit their time on technology. I think that an app to limit social media use would be an amazing idea. The three reasons I side with this argument are; Some people neglect their friends and family when they’re on social media, People can miss out on life if they’re busy trying to record it, and Many people become addicted to technology.
Social media plays a big role in the majority of people lives. There is conflict on whether it’s more harmful or more helpful. In the article, “Antisocial Networking?” from the New York Times by Hilary Stout dated April 30, 2010, she explains her position of being anti-social networking. She claims that social media takes away the chance for the youth to develop empathy, recognize emotions, and apprehend meanings of facial expressions and body language. Stout fears these skills will only fade away. On the other hand, Melissa Healy explains her reasons for being pro-social networking in her article, “Teenage Social Media Butterflies May Not Be such a Bad Idea” from the Los Angeles Times dated May 18, 2010. Considering social media allows teens to communicate with each other, build social skills, and create opportunities for adolescents, I disagree with Hilary Stout’s position.
Social media details act as a form of low quality leisure for people, which is pointless. Tech discusses the main issue with social media apps: they’re a form of low quality leisure while high quality leisure requires some sort of skill or challenge which generates a meaning in life, ultimately making one happier (pg
As human beings we are like pies and we have needs that must be met to be wholesome and delicious but with social media we are like the decadent pie you see that looks good from far but in reality it is far from good because once someone has tasted a slice of the pie, they quickly realize it’s ingredients have spoiled beyond belief. Social media corrupts our mind, our health and our skills of interaction and relationship building. Our capacity for empathy is stunted and our need for human connection is diminishing by the fallacy that social media is “social” when in reality it only keeps us trapped and blinded to the fact that real human connection can only be made by live experience and expression of emotion as
Social media causes more misunderstanding than understanding, affecting the way we interact today. Families and friends are losing "personal communication" and trust, that is not provided through an electronic device. Social media exposes personal information, the moment it is shared on the Internet making it public for anyone to see it. Social Media influence and misuse is felt when applying for jobs which have actually caused people to lose their jobs, when companies review a person 's social media presence, a standard operating procedure, and finds their content questionable. How then do we use social media correctly?
Some people have negative thoughts about social media because they think that It’s just a waste of time. In the article, “ To Be Where I Am” by “ Wendy Lustbader ”. She quoted that “ The reason I don’t carry a cell phone or web connected
Even though Social media was made to have a positive impact on people lives but things are never perfect. As with everything in life, there are elements of both associated with it, and just like junk food and most good things, moderation is the key. As human beings we can’t help but succumb to the latest trend, and to occasionally overdoing it and sacrificing valuable time that could be spent on study or exercise, but we’re not completely to blame. We need to learn what is the most important in our lives and but those ahead of the things that would consume our time, like Facebook and technology.
Social media users can become depressed after spending too much time obsessing over social media and how other people look because they are not like that “perfect” person that they see. This can greatly affect users’ social skills with others as well because they are constantly on their phone. The overuse of social media can decrease time spent with a person, ultimately resulting in the end of a relationship due to lack of physical interaction. People need to be more aware of how much time they spend on social media as this can affect their happiness and their overall quality of life. The overuse of social media has a negative effect on society today. People do not realize just how much the use of social media can negatively affect them both mentally and
Social media is a great advancement in society. However, social media has many positives and negative elements to it. Such as increased social connections, affects on mental health and stress, language skills including nonverbal communication, and emotional states. With each positive of technologies advancements in social communication there is a negative. In other words, social media is like a double edged sword— that when used correctly can be great in battle, but when misused or used for the wrong reasons, can cause harm to the one who wields the weapon. It takes a knowledgeable swordsman to use a sword properly, but a fool to swing it widely, same can be said for technology, if its not used correctly it can be harmful, but used wisely and with careful thought it can lead to many victories and positive outcomes.
