Is Social Media Hurtful, Or Beneficial To Our Society? When the topic of social media is brought up in our society, most teens would rave about how wonderful it is, or how much it has changed their lives. But is social media really a good thing to teens and young adults in our society? Social media is indeed not beneficial to our society, it is hurtful to the young people who have made it a part of their lives. It is hurtful because it consumes your life, it makes you rely on others for approval, and we are missing out on life’s experiences. For example, when we see our favorite artists perform live at a concert, we focus too much on videotaping and posting things to snapchat that we miss out on the real experience. Coppinger also stated that, “we’re too preoccupied with proving ourselves to others.” What she means is that we are too caught up with showing others what we are up to instead of actually taking life’s experiences and enjoying them. Nevertheless, critics of social media haters will probably argue that we only use our phones for necessary tasks, but I maintain that social media is not beneficial to our lives because coppinger says “We ignore the amount of time we spend on apps like snapchat, and only recall all those important company emails we had to respond to. By this I mean that we only think of the important things as time we have spent on our phone when in reality most of the time spent is on useless social media apps. Ultimately what is at stake here is people’s lives being taken away by pointless apps, that don’t really let you connect with people on a personal level. But, overall social media is not beneficial to our society because it consumes your life, it makes you rely on others for approval, and we are missing out on all life
