“Social media seemed to promise a way to better connect with people; instead it seems to have made it easier to tune out people we don't agree with.” ( Worthman). Social media like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat all want their enjoyers to be able to reflect on a diverse community of culture, respect other members using the same app, be thoughtful when posting current events, and Show a side of your creativity. In today's society social media has changed our perspectives on life, negatively affecting people's relationships with their culture and world wide community. Fake news on social media is one way that causes mankind to rebel against one another's beliefs and ideas. Everyday we may come across or see some type of fake news …show more content…
Jenna Wortham the author who wrote “Is Social Media Disconnecting Us from the Big Picture?” has mentioned “We are two countries one that sees blue and black and the other that sees white and gold. The internet once offered Outlets we could use to understand one another. But they are rapidly disappearing.” We as people through the last couple of years have seen social media as Black and white meaning people who use social media have to live up to these certain expectations and post, people comment or tweet certain things that are considered “okay” but honestly social is an amazing source we could use to share creative ideas or things that are happening in our own personal world. People shouldn't get judged or hated on because their posts don't live up to our own personalized particular standards. Even though social media does bring out the best in people like their personality, creativity and own personal life and achievements. It also brings out the worst in them. A side we haven’t discovered before. Anyone who uses social media should alway think about the purpose of this post, comment or tweet, am I being truthful in this post, comment or tweet? Could this post, comment or tweet affect me or the others …show more content…
According to Jeff Bullas a blogger, he shared with us that “ Social media isn't a place to share drama, issues with family, work or school.” If we post things that we know could lead us to trouble with ourselves or with others, then why do we post it? Is it really worth having your community and your peers dislike you in a negative way all because of a little post, tweet or comment you had to share with others? Also posting a little bit about yourself that makes you come off needy, cocky or rude can have a negative impact on how people perceive you . Social media shouldn’t be a place where we bring people down, where we say whatever we want without taking into consideration that this post could really hurt someone else, post how people should look or portray themselves to this world. When using social media we often may feel that when “ You compare yourself to others more often, you judge yourself, you compare am I better or worse than my friends? Am I happier? Are they happier?.” (Vedantam) Sometimes when scrolling through social media feeds we see all these people posting about them having a good time or their accomplishments and we may feel super happy for them because we know that they are living the life they deserve. Also sometimes on our feed we see people attacking one another or people posting about their own personal drama and post things like
Social media has a variety of platforms, allowing individuals to freely articulate their opinions to a large audience. This tool has it’s benefits as people can join together to raise awareness to certain matters but there is also a cruel downside to the public use of social media. In Jon Ronson’s article, “How One Stupid Tweet Blew Up Justine Sacco’s Life”, he distinctly reveals that the use of social media for debate/dissent/social and political change brings together a large audience to improve our society in difference to trolling, bullying and public shaming where there is an outstanding victim looked down upon through a widespread of individuals. These two differences stem from the belief of one that they are informing an individual of their wrong doing they are in fact leading on a greater attack than intended. The concept behind“social media is so perfectly designed to manipulate
People find that using social media is enjoyable, even pleasurable. Students at Harvard looked in to this claim: "Through a series of experiments, the researchers at Harvard University learned through the study that the act of disclosing information about oneself activates the same part of the brain that is associated with the sensation of pleasure, the same pleasure that we get from eating food, getting money or even having sex"(site2). In other words many find it pleasurable to post things about themselves and discover new things about those they know or admire, to a point where using social media each day becomes an addiction. The majority of the social media audience is teens or children from ages 7 to 21. Older people also post status, however not as frequent as the younger generation.
Over the past few years, social media has had a significant effect on the communication, knowledge, and public reaction to assorted topics in our society today. Social media has been a great addition to our society today in helping spread news more quickly and makes us communicate more efficiently, but the negatives overshadow the positives. Specific types of social media such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram have been a catalyst to giving people the opportunities to expose topics and voice their opinions to the public eye. We see athletes, celebrities, and politicians being affected by this every day. In our lives today, everyone has lost their right to privacy due to the expansions and advances of social media. Whenever a tweet is posted on Twitter or a picture is posted on either Instagram or Facebook, many people will emphasize their opinion and sometimes create negative views that can hurt the person being talked about or viewed. We have seen in many major topics in the news, reporters and writers will blast certain topics out of proportion. News stations even affect social media because they often use posts in their reporting. Thus, people will continue to voice their views on social media, causing its influence to continually grow. Social Media has the ability to violate our personal privacy and expose the negative interpretations on people and topics in society.
Over the past couple of decades, we are all aware that social media has had a great impact on us and the way we think. Social media has revolutionized the way people communicate and socialize on a daily basis. It has been spreading propaganda on how we should live our lives, how to act, what’s right and wrong, what’s good for us and many more. It is double edge sword that hinders people’s abilities to think for their self, but has open such a vast world to share one another 's opinions in a matter of seconds on the internet or television.
Social media has changed the way people communicate with each other and in turn, has affected our ability to empathize in both negative and positive ways. One of the most harmful consequences is the rise of cyber-bullying. Another negative issue has been the trend of trolling in comments sections of websites, chat rooms, and other online venues of communication. In spite of this, there have been constructive consequences due to social media such as the ability for family and friends to keep in touch on a regular basis. Because of social media, many people are finding support and resources to help them when they fall on hard times or experience tragedies like death and illness. Overall, social media is an exciting new world that changes as it grows and it will be up to society to utilize it for good.
Social media has taken over the world of communication and has changed the ways in which we communicate on a daily basis. It is extremely influential on our lives because of how easily we are able to access these mediums of communication. I’m intrigued by the effects that social media has on people’s perceptions of their self-worth. Almost all of the social networking sites seem to measure, at least to some extent, the popularity level or status of its users. All have a number of ‘followers’ or ‘friends’ which if there’s a high number of followers or friends that seems to elevate a person’s popularity level or their online status. This in turn could make their self-esteem or ego rise, whereas if their follower level is low it may disappoint or aggravate that user. All of these sites also offer areas where followers can ‘like’ pictures or posts, ‘comment’ on these pictures/posts, ‘share’ the post, and what have you. How important are ‘likes’ and whatnot to our actual self-esteem? Do we value online popularity the same way or more than we value real-life interactions? How could this affect the mental health of those who use these networking sites? Is this kind of online community promoting more narcissistic persons in the community? So many questions… I’m not alone in asking these questions. I’m convinced that social media has a negative influence on the self-esteem of its users.
People have become more brave in posting offensive comments and harshly critiquing the beliefs of others as long as others do the same. In response to Sacco’s tweet, people posted repulsive insults and death threats about her, all from comfort of behind a screen. Most of the people who replied to Justine’s comment would never confront Sacco face to face much less comment on the post if it had not been for the thousands of others who did. Social media has given people the opportunity to ruin people’s life from the comfort of their home and face no guilt, making it one of the most powerful weapons in the
Social media has created many great outcomes socially, but with that good comes many bad outcomes and some outcomes that are just down right ugly. Facebook and twitter have introduced a whole new world in the ways of conversation and meeting others. This cyber-world that is created brings it's users into using many if not all of it's features and created culture outside of just being online. This is showing that social media is now not just a online thing it is an everyday thing in real life situations. It is up to the user to choose how he or she is going to portray both their online selves and their real life elves.
These teens then make their own posts, making sure to mask their imperfections or things like anxiety or depression. Teens feel like they have to seem like they’re perfect so that they can get validation through their peers’ likes. Using social media can fill our desire to be perfect by editing flaws or hiding how they really feel. People choose to posts these posts because they want to be perfect and get approval from
These things have become so common that not having them almost makes it seem like there is something missing. Because of features such as these, it is incredibly easy to share every aspect of what we are reading, doing, eating and listening to with everyone in our social networks. While this has meant incredible advances in the way we interact with our world, it has also fundamentally changed the way our social relationships are created and sustained. Social medial led users to have false impression of others and changed our feelings. Because social media users tend to only show the most positive aspects of their lives, social media users have a false sense of reality when it comes to how they seem themselves, how others see them and how they see other people. “It is not difficult to say that social media effect our perception of others” (Goshgarian213).
Social media has caused a substantial decrease in face-to-face time, stopped people from working effectively, and has caused an increase in bullying. Social media as defined by dictionary.com is “websites and other online means of communication that are used by large groups of people to share information and to develop social and professional contacts”. People use social media for networking, education, and entertainment. Some of today’s most popular social media sites include Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, Vine, YouTube, and LinkedIn. Facebook is used as a basic social media site.
We live in a world that has become addicted and dedicated toward social media and it is driving America’s youth into the ground. Teenagers and adults are so wrapped up in social media that is runs their lives every day. Constantly people are checking their phones for the latest on social networks. They have to see pictures, tweets, statuses, comments, likes, and the list goes on and on. Social media is becoming the focus point in the modern American society that it is beginning to control people’s social skills, communication skills, and their livelihood.
Social media can be used in our days as a very helpful tool for many things in changing any person’s life ant attitude. It has a positive impact on the society level. These media will keep the person socially active and open to all what happened in the world. Sharing the latest news, photos, finding new friends and knowing the culture. Also, it allows for millions to keep in touch with each other and update for all the new technology. And, it helps people who have difficulties in communication with others to be more socialized and stronger and develop more confidence to feel more comfortable, protected and relaxed just sitting behind a screen. “It saved me time and money without ever requiring me to leave the house; it salvaged my social life, allowed me to conduct interviews as a reporter and kept a lifeline open to my far-flung extended family” says Leonard(231).
Think of a time when people didn’t have technology and how they had to interact, whether it had been from writing letters to using telegraphs, communicating with people was hard to come by back then. Of course times have changed and now technology has made it easier over the years, social media has become an essential part of our life whether it be on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and many other websites. Now days everybody is using it whether its companies using media to promote its products or even teachers to tweet out what last night’s homework was. Social media is a great tool that helps us connect with the world and communicate our ideas. Yet there are some people who believe that social media has a negative impact towards our society as they believe that people can get addicted to it, it causes them to get easily distracted, and many other dangers. Even though people have different opinions on whether social media has a positive or negative impact on society, it can be said that social media has a positive effect on society as a whole because it lets people communicate with each other easily, it has been said to improve education among children, and has helped improve the economy in the world.
Social Media is defined by Merriam-Webster as “forms of electronic communication (as Web sites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (as videos)” (Merriam-Webster), and for many Americans is a method of social interaction that is used often on a daily basis. It has been determined that one in five people use social media at least once a day and that 19% of Americans between the age of 15 and 54 are on sites like Facebook and Twitter(). It’s no longer common place to send handwritten letters or birthday cards, now writing on a wall, sending a tweet or snapping a picture is accepted. Although social media has provided todays society with instant forms of communication and ways to connect, it also created a new standard for living and has caused problems for many groups of citizens in all walks of life and has caused society to re-think its usage. There are two views about social media, either that. It is a positive addition to society and its benefits outweigh the risks, or that social media causes more harm than good and it’s usage should be limited.
