Masculinity is so Fragile
Over the past couple of decades, we are all aware that social media has had a great impact on us and the way we think. Social media has revolutionized the way people communicate and socialize on a daily basis. It has been spreading propaganda on how we should live our lives, how to act, what’s right and wrong, what’s good for us and many more. It is double edge sword that hinders people’s abilities to think for their self, but has open such a vast world to share one another 's opinions in a matter of seconds on the internet or television. “Be a man! You must be swift as the coursing river! Be a Man! With all the force of a great typhoon! Be a man! With all the strength of a raging fire, mysterious as the dark side

Still to this day men are still afraid their feminine side or do anything that is considered gay. The one thing men are scared the most is showing affection between two males. A majority of males have readily accepted that there 's nothing wrong with showing a feminine side to males, But a few have not. For example with “Twitter”, they has replaced the favourite button that was a star to show that you like it, to a heart. A group of males have gone far to explain why they will not use the button anymore due to it making them look like a “faggot”(See Figure 2). Men want to retain their masculinity to show that they are the alpha male and have no intention of showing their feminine side, because being feminine is considered …show more content…
Both parents agreed having any feminine traits would automatically considered me not a man. That includes long hair, non-muscular figure, high voice, showing affection towards men, body jewellery, dressing more femininely and many more. I the youngest in my family and only the male child, have gone against my parent’s beliefs of an “ideal figure” of a man. I grew out my hair, pierced my ears, dress more femininely by the way my dad dresses and care way more about my looks. My parent’s have not grown to custom of the new generations vision of a ideal man, but are stuck in a rut. This is true for the older generations. They are so caught up with the old image of what a man is that they refuse to change
And this exact same message is being shared, perhaps in different ways, all throughout the world; as young men are continuously bombarded with this indication that somehow any feminine quality should be repressed. Society, through avenues of media and other propaganda, has formed a way of thinking for men that causes them, despite always having these feelings internally, to put on an act which inhibits them from openly expressing any type of femininity, especially in public. In Michael S. Kimmel’s work, Masculinity as Homophobia, he reveals the great secret of all men: We are afraid of other men. Kimmel urges the reader to realize that men are grouped int... ...
Myers mentioned in his article that this generation of young discouraged, angry men feels abandoned with the today’s norms. Male movie stars and athletes have further influenced the masculine norms. In males perspective, liking a feminine color, doing feminine actions, listening to specified girl music is considered to be less manly. These have greatly affected the likes and dislikes of many men. The entertainment industry has created a big gap between what is masculine or feminine. This has caused a big separation and it's getting worse. Male are taught to be man of the house, strong, and powerful, but sometimes they’re belittled by society that they can’t do certain things and all the power is
Although teenage girls can be impacted nagatively, it also makes them aware of the issues that face women in our world today and empowers them to make a change.
In our society today, the view of Masculinity has changed a lot where it almost
The models of masculinity ‘generated powerful anxieties regarding male identity’ (history.ac.uk, 2016). Further studies have found that most identities shown within messages written to loved ones, compared to fellow servicemen, show the constructions of different identities the men created compared to different narrative forms. ‘Expression of these identities was affected by the audience being addressed’ in order to cast a persona the people they are writing to wants. The persona these men took on enabled them to mask their fear and anxieties during war time and could showcase their bravery through a written medium; questionably it could be linked to the rise of the masculine crisis and how personal barriers were built to showcase an ideology of what the world wanted you to be; compared to how the men really felt. The influence of the male model of manliness and the ideas society wanted men to conform to, compared to those who did not showcase their pain and suffering, were praised ‘the complex and the overworked neurasthenic officer was much closer to an acceptable, even heroic male ideal’ (History.ac.uk, 2016). These men were the heroes in the eyes of the society due to showcasing their strength during a time of despair. Recognizing a time of heightened male dominance only 50 years ago, it showcases that masculinity and
I was born on March 08, 1995 at roughly seven pounds. When I was extracted from my mother, I was given the gender of a male with the appearance of my male body parts. My mother used to say to me, growing up as a toddler that I had so much hair like former American Football player, Troy Polamalu. People had always assumed that I was a girl, therefore my mother had to correct them and say, “No, he is a boy”. Growing up a toddler, I was always wearing some type of jeans with a sports shirt and shoes that were mostly colored black or blue. As I grew older, I gained interest in baseball, wrestling, and the military. I always wanted to play with action figures such as GI Joe and wrestling celebrities in addition to imaginary flying in an apache helicopter or taking command in a battle tank. Advancing to my pre-teen years, I wanted to play baseball, which is considered to be mostly a boy sport. It was at this moment, that my gender was a boy. Progressing to my teen years, I started to observe my father and learn my gender on his roles as the man in our family. I noticed that my father was already taking charge in the house and giving me orders that I needed to complete. Going through middle school, most boys had some type of sports backpack while the girls
Men are feeling the malaise and unhappiness frequently, which means that a change will come in which men can feel as they belong to something that defines them as masculine, and are accepted for it. Evidence from our own history in America with both men and women changing the perceptions on the roles of their own gender have proven that in time progression will be made. The real question that is yet to be answered is; what new types of masculinities will arise, and when will they come?
As the male population runs around not knowing what to actually do, they feel lost. Does the male populous even care? Is the way a man perceives a woman really that big of a deal? Is it true that chivalry is dead or has society and various movements push it to the wayside? With all of the
There is a great connection between social media and the construction of masculinity in young boys. As mentioned earlier, our parents play the greatest role in raising us to act and dress according to our gender. However, once the child begins to attend school and become more exposed to the world in other ways (extra-curricular activities, sports) they become more aware of the pre-established norms of both genders. Media has a big influence on the construction of a male’s masculinity. Through celebrities, movies, songs, young boys begin to look upto this source of influence as it’s what is accepted by the world and not just your home. Rap music has gained popularity in teens with artists such as Eminem, Tupac who reinforce themes
I was criticized for minor things like getting my clothes dirty or refusing to stay still to get my hair done. These comments grew more and more frustrating as I got older and eventually became far more critical with references to how I played, the clothes I chose to wear, and even being told I was too loud and that my interests weren’t normal. When me and my grandmother went to visit other family member’s I would always be asked questions that seemed entirely inappropriate to me as a small child like whether or not I had a crush or a boyfriend but I noticed no one ever asked my male cousins these questions as though their value wasn’t based solely on their ability to attract the opposite sex. My disinterest in things like hair and make-up led to me falling behind my peers when it came to matters of appearance. While other girls were discussing their extensive morning routines I was showering and shoving my unruly hair up into a ponytail. This also meant that I was falling behind when it came to personal relationships as my female friends were discovering boys, boys were treating me like an anomaly. I was consistently asked if I was a lesbian
The influence of rapidly growing social media, television, and the internet has taken the world by storm in recent years. Its fascinating development over the years is nothing short of remarkable when you take into account that 20 years ago, only 16 million people in the world were "online", compared to the 2 billion that roam on the internet now. Modern communications technology has now become so familiar and utterly banal, yet there is still this tingling sensation when one receives a text from a love interest on Facebook or WhatsApp. Human identity, the idea that defines each and every one of us, is on the verge of being radically defined by social media. This essay will provide a balanced outlook on the positive and negative effects that social media have had on the behaviour and thinking on humans. The topic is a very controversial one, but the purpose of this is to help readers formulate a view on whether the arguments in this essay benefit society in general, or whether they harm the well-being of the human brain and detach us from reality.
Who’s to say that just because you are male you have to act manly and if you are female you must be girly? Over the years, gender roles have had a dominant place in society, different families emphasizing different roles. Society places certain expectations on men and women, designating particular responsibilities to each.Throughout the years, society 's rules and expectations for men and women have changed, therefore, it 's important to know where gender roles come from and how they affect people because they play an important role in shaping the way we think about others in society.
We live in a world that has become addicted and dedicated toward social media and it is driving America’s youth into the ground. Teenagers and adults are so wrapped up in social media that is runs their lives every day. Constantly people are checking their phones for the latest on social networks. They have to see pictures, tweets, statuses, comments, likes, and the list goes on and on. Social media is becoming the focus point in the modern American society that it is beginning to control people’s social skills, communication skills, and their livelihood.
Think of a time when people didn’t have technology and how they had to interact, whether it had been from writing letters to using telegraphs, communicating with people was hard to come by back then. Of course times have changed and now technology has made it easier over the years, social media has become an essential part of our life whether it be on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and many other websites. Now days everybody is using it whether its companies using media to promote its products or even teachers to tweet out what last night’s homework was. Social media is a great tool that helps us connect with the world and communicate our ideas. Yet there are some people who believe that social media has a negative impact towards our society as they believe that people can get addicted to it, it causes them to get easily distracted, and many other dangers. Even though people have different opinions on whether social media has a positive or negative impact on society, it can be said that social media has a positive effect on society as a whole because it lets people communicate with each other easily, it has been said to improve education among children, and has helped improve the economy in the world.
The social media is one of the most common means of communication and pretty much of knowing anything and everything around the world these days, and it is growing very rapidly. It changes and affects each person in a different way, or ways. Some may argue that social media has a bad influence on children and young adults, while most people see that the social media has a more positive effect on them than a negative one. Social media is basically the new way of keeping in touch with everything and everyone, and of even strengthening bonds between each other. This essay will argue that social media has improved communication between people, and has also improved the means of communication between them.
