What comes to mind when people think of sports? Baseball, basketball, and football, easily make the list. But what about eSports? Is eSports considered a sport?
The world today is much different from what it was twenty years ago, and it will continue to change and evolve drastically in the years to come. Change is accepted by society and is often celebrated. Take technology for example; the smartphone was invented and now most everyone has one and enjoys the convenience that it brings. Just like traditional sports, teams have long lasting rivalries and are usually the most viewed games. The largest rivalry in League of Legends eSports is the Counter Logic Gaming (CLG) and Team Solomid (TSM) rivalry. Their antagonism for each other can compare to a rivalry such as the Red Sox and the Yankees rivalry, although there is one large difference. The rivalry between CLG and TSM has not lasted as long as the Red Sox and Yankees rivalry. This is not due to the validity of what a sport is, but that the eSports scene has not been present long enough to create long lasting rivalries that are decades old. Fans are so passionate about supporting their teams that it can get to the point that fans will have distain for each other because of what team they support. The fans of eSport teams fuel the athletes that they support with loud cheers and signs, just as in most traditional sports. The athletes want to give back to the support their fans give. The only way this can be achieved is through winning. Winning gives them joy, because this is their passion. Not only is it their passion, but it is also their career. Athletes need to be able to perform on a high level so their team and fans do not give up on them. The ability to play at such a high level is a trained skill and takes time to

Poker has developed a massive following in recent years, with the help of media outlets like ESPN and Fox the game of poker is world renown now. “This mainstream acceptance is due to increased media coverage of high-stakes poker tournaments such as the 2003 World Series of Poker and various weekly tournaments on the World Poker Tour.” (/iml.jou.ufl.edu...) The two outlets that represent this game people would say that the game of poker is a sport. We can all agree that it is a game but does that necessarily make it a sport? Of course the serious poker players will say that it is, but for the players of other games qualified as a sport say otherwise. So despite the recent growth in popularity of poker; the claim of it being a sport has brought criticism. What about poker makes this a valid discussion; the two networks that broadcast it or is there really qualities of sport behind this game.
I believe that the expansion of prisoners’ rights, since the famous Cooper v. Plate (1964) case, has been a great thing. For a long time prisoners were treated like they were not a person, like they were the filth of this earth. They had no rights and were not offered any type of protection within the correctional system. With the Cooper v. Plate case, came the law that the prisoners’ rights would be protected by the constitution. This also led to prisoners being able to file lawsuits against state officials who may be violating their rights, and their overall treatment within the correctional system. These were luxuries that prisoners had not had before. They were not given the basic human rights, nor were their rights protected by the constitution. No one had truly advocated for prisoner rights, until this case. This case paved the way for prisoner rights and the humane treatment for all.
What makes something a sport? What characteristics define a sport? Why do we feel that some sports are not considered sports when we have never played them? When you google the definition of a sport this is what you will find “an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.” So as long as there is physical activity and competing then whatever you are playing is considered a sport. When you think of a “sport” that should not be considered one what is the first that comes to mind; why? Why is it when googling “Sports that aren 't considered sports” Cheerleading comes up so often?
Well then, Basketball and football aren’t sports either if cheerleading is not a sport. There is no solid definition for a sport, but cheer meets all the given criteria for a sport. Just like any other sport, cheer is a danger with stunting, flips, tumbling - all without padding or anything protective besides a blue mat. Cheer is so much more than being smiley, happy, clappy, and cheery. Cheerleading is just as much a sport as any other sport, It is the most physically challenging, and best sport out there.

Most people watch some form of sports, whether it be the Olympics or the highlights on ESPN. The NBA and NHL playoffs are underway and it seems to be the only news on ESPN. While during the Olympics, the coverage seems to be non-stop and close to equal.
Fox Sports is another very popular sports broadcaster that competes with ESPN. Both are very accurate sources and are only different in little ways. They both have been around for a long time and are very skilled in what they do. Another less popular website that is gaining in popularity is SBS Sport. Broadcasted competitive gaming has been around since the beginning of arcade games when people were competing for the highest score on shows like Starcade back in 1982(Bell). However, in the past couple of years the competitive gaming world has exploded in growth with more games, more tournaments, more players, and bigger cash prizes. During this most recent November there were eight major tournaments for a multitude of games including League of Legends, Call of Duty, and Counter Strike: Global Offensive and some less competitive games such as Battlefield 4, FIFA 14, and Street Fighter. With over a five million people watching these tournaments it is clearly visible that there is a passionate and large group of people that want this competitive gaming scene to expand. With all the activity going on in only a month and with smaller tournaments running all the time it is clear to see that competitive gaming or more formally called eSports has become in such a small time. However, the important question is whether or not eSports should be considered an actual sport like Football, Soccer, or Basketball. According to a ruling by the Olympic Committee, League of Legends already is, and will be taking a place in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro with other games being considered for the 2020 Olympics. Although there are those out that would like to dispute this ruling and say that eSports don’t meet the requirements of a traditional sport. A big argument has been conceived from the committee decision, but not all the arguments being used is valid and then there are those that.
Someone is sitting on a stage with people clapping and people cheering, but they didn’t sing or dance, they did magic while playing a video-game. This is competitive gaming. People can see and know that gaming is fun. They are playing a sport. Some disagree with this, but many other people believe it is. The players must go to the gym for fast reactions and stamina and must be very mentally focused, and just agree to stick with the trends as well. Video gaming should be a sport.
The birth of Esports can contribute most of its discovery to its original roots from the 19th century era (Bellis). To understand the next generation of athlete culture, Esports, it is necessary for individuals to understand the beginnings of the newly bred activity. During the 19th century era video games were often overlooked due to its funky nature, however, the introduction of new technology that allowed individuals to manipulate and control objects was appealing to some (Bellis). One of the very first video games to have been developed was a simple graphical computer application used to resemble virtual Tic-Tac-Toe (Bellis). Although the game was simple in nature and basic in control, ...
Looking back in history to the 19th century Europe, colonization and global expansion created a sense of competition amongst European nations. This sparked global rivalries over territories and was a catalyst to the age of nationalism in Europe. The competition between countries venture of manifest destiny was the leading catalyst in the rise of nationalism. It is no surprise that the nationalism and competitive nature of 19th century expansionism, created a platform for the rivalry and competition in modern sports (Bottenburg). Global rivalries in sports are played out in, major events such as the world cup and the Olympics. These events bring out the die-hard and the casual fan together in a global celebration of sporting and national pride. The World Cup of soccer is a great place to begin looking at the impact modern sports have on nationalism and national identity.
