Investigating a Correlation Between Mathematics and English Literature Scores
Aim:
The aim of my investigation is to find out if there is any correlation
between individualÂ’s scores in GCSE Mathematics and English
Literature. Also, I aim to find out whether the correlation (if
present) is negative or positive.
Reason for Investigation:
I have decided to investigate this as at my previous high school many
of my teachers, but in particular my English literature teacher,
thought that if a pupil was a high achiever in the English Literature
GCSE then it was unlikely that they were also a high achiever in the
Mathematics GCSE. She had reached this conclusion through the
knowledge that English Literature is a creative subject whereÂ’ as
Mathematics depended more on logic and Memory. If her conclusion
proved to be correct my results will have a negative correlation. This
would mean that if the scores in Mathematics were high she would
expect the individualÂ’s results in English Literature to lower.
I disagree with her conclusion. I think that if you are a high
achiever in English Literature you will also be a high achiever in
Mathematics. I think that as both subjects are challenging and require
analysis of the text/results that both subjects depend on the pupil
having a high intelligence. If my conclusion is proved to be right
then my results will have a positive correlation. This means that if a
pupil achieved high scores in Mathematics I expect them to achieve
high scores in English Literature.
Both the conclusions made by myself and the English literature teacher
expect that there will be a correlation between the GCSE scores
obtained in English Literature and Mathematics.
Data Collection and Sampling:
I obtained my raw data from the high school which I previously
attended as I thought this was only fair as both the English
literature teacher and I had based our conclusion on the results from
Surprisingly, academic performance and maladaptive perfectionism are considered invalid. (r(523) = 0.2, p.674).This is because the p value is much to high (.674) to be considered a valid correlation. The unusually large ‘p’ value indicates a high chance of randomness occurring in the data. The relationship does not support my hypothesis, nor does it follow previous findings as it indicates those who score high on the maladaptive perfectionism tend to have a higher mark on their academic performance.
She compares to the mournful emotions of the audience of describing the difference of students that are “highly successful” and the “disillusioned” students. The highly successful students are the students that work hard and have good grades. The disillusioned students are the opposite that have little contact with teachers and do not care for what grade they are given. The issue of emotion that comes from these two is there is always going to be students that do not try hard enough to succeed in having a better education for themselves. More of the higher percentage are girls that are successful and boys are not so successful. Standardized testing requires student to answer same or similar questions with given answer choices that are often in multiple choice or true or false form. Dating back from 2200 B.C standardized testing is recorded being used in China ,where people applying for government jobs had to take an examination ,testing their knowledge on confucian philosophy and poetry.During the mid-1800s in Industrial Revolution ,soon after child labor laws were enacted taking children out of farms and factories and putting them into schools the use of standardized test was introduced to America in Boston. Standardized testing was being used to compare schools and teaching quality; Boston’s program was soon adopted nation wide. Types of standardized test including the most common achievement tests and aptitude test. Achievement test measure the progress a student has made academically in a time period. Whereas an aptitude test attempt to predict a student’s ability to succeed academically.Standardized test are used on a large scale because computers can score them quickly, consistently, and inexpensively rather than open ended essay questions which need to be evaluated essay by essay, though essay questions allow for deeper thinking.The purpose for standardized testing is to create a standard on which all students can learn equally,but in “The Real threat to American Schools” by Alfie Kohn, the author claims that idea of standards might not be true. The author makes an interesting point in that if the possibility that all students met the state standards and passed all the tests would those students be considered ‘perfectly educated’ of would the politicians and test takers believe instead that the test was too easy and the standards were too low. The purpose of Afraji Gill’s piece is to clear up the misconceptions of what society perceives success to be. Afraji Gill himself who achieved high grades throughout his high school education felt that his educators’ and societies’ definition of success was wrong. To Afraji Gill success was not high grades, receiving awards or scholarships and being on the honour roll. To him success was defined as how well you grasped the learning material and knew how to put it to use. That a grade on a piece of paper should not define your intelligence and your success. For there are people in the world who receive outstanding grades because they happened to memorize the materials for their test, but as soon as the test is over they have not properly grasped the material and knowledge covered, to put into practical use. I think that Afraji Gill’s article’s purpose is to make people aware that you should not base a person’s success on their grades but on rather how well they know the material, and that failure should not be looked upon as being unsuccessful, but instead should be acknowledged as a stepping stone in becoming

This points out an obvious flaw in depending on standardized tests.
One of the biggest problems Americans face today is a US student’s underwhelming academic performance. When compared to other countries, the United States comes in 18th place in math literacy and 25th place in reading literacy. The problem is not just a standard problem throughout the country, as there is much variation between graduation and subject literacy rates, with huge differences also between schools alone. These statistics are disappointing because the US is considered one of the largest world powers. The disparities in American students academic achievement is also detrimental because they are less able to compete in the global market place. Many things have been used to explain this disparity but race has often led as the main explanation. The racial disparities in academic achievement have also led to acts of law, such as the Hispanic Education act, which focus on improving test scores in New Mexico’s minority students. While there is a correlation between race and academic performance, I believe there are other factors, like economic class, which also have a profound effect on a students’ academic achievement. If my hypothesis is correct, review of further literature should show discrepancies between students of different socioeconomic status as a major influence on a student’s academic achievement.

Math is the study of fact that is based on experiments, proof, and facts, but there are many fallacies that go along with it, including the ability to neglect theories. As Einstein once said “that all our math is measured against reality, is primitive and childlike - and yet the most precious thing we have” Which shows that it might have flaws but it is still so brilliant and hard to defeat. In many aspects of human behavior, the arts, ethics, religion, and emotion, are some factors that can be slightly tied into the idea of math (Einstein Exhibit). The main problem is that it might be looked down upon because it might be considered illogical. Many people believe that there are no links between these subjects and math and that they are completely opposites, unrelated in anyway. If you look hard enough there are links between math and the arts, and can be found, even if math is not open to theories.

Using literacy strategies in the mathematics classroom leads to successful students. “The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM, 1989) define mathematical literacy as an “individual's ability to explore, to conjecture, and to reason logically, as well as to use a variety of mathematical methods effectively to solve problems." Exploring, making conjectures, and being able to reason logically, all stem from the early roots of literacy. Authors Matthews and Rainer (2001) discusses how teachers have questioned the system of incorporating literacy with mathematics in the last couple of years. To most people English or Language Arts is a creative course and math is just a logical, you get it or you don’t class. My purpose writing this paper is to change your mind. I believe that Math is just as, or more creative than English. I will demonstrate this through a couple of examples.
The Nature of Mathematics Mathematics relies on both logic and creativity, and it is pursued both for a variety of practical purposes and for its basic interest. The essence of mathematics lies in its beauty and its intellectual challenge. This essay is divided into three sections, which are patterns and relationships, mathematics, science and technology and mathematical inquiry. Firstly, Mathematics is the science of patterns and relationships. As a theoretical order, mathematics explores the possible relationships among abstractions without concern for whether those abstractions have counterparts in the real world.
