I interviewed Ashly James. She graduated in May with a nursing degree at Salisbury University. She is currently working in the oncology unit at Howard County General Hospital. Ashly has been working as a nurse for 8 months. During our interview, I asked Ashly to define nursing in her own words. She said nursing is a profession that gives her the opportunity to care for other individuals, families and her own communities so that they can maintain or recover to an optimal health status. She also said “I definitely look at nursing far different than just a job. It actually gives me the ability to use the skills I have learned to serve others and that ties in perfectly with the morals I have and how I want to spend my life.” After listening to Ashly’s definition of nursing, I realized how many people you do help through just one patient you encounter. It is just as important for me as it is for Ashly to be in an environment where I can display my values and morals while working. …show more content…
She became a nurse because she was always interested in promoting and optimizing health and the prevention of illnesses. She wanted to be there for all others who were going through an illness to help alleviate their pain and help facilitate their healing process. Most importantly, She wanted to advocate for others who could not advocate for themselves, especially the elderly or those who suffer from a terminal illness like cancer. She wanted to be their voice and to make sure they got exactly what they wanted and desired. Ashly said “I wanted to be the compassionate and selfless nurse that any patient would want to have and I strive daily to be that person for my patients.” The reasons for me wanting to become a nurse are similar to Ashly’s reasons. When I do become a nurse, I want to be the best nurse possible. I never want to see a patient as an object. I want to treat each individual with the respect and care every human
Nursing’s development from an occupation to a profession follows the devotion and sacrifice of many amazing women throughout history. Considered to be one of the oldest professions, women have performed what could be considered nursing duties since the beginning of time. Although there have been many events and many individuals who have contributed to nursing’s evolution from the occupation it was once considered to the profession that now exists, the development of formal education opportunities and scholarly resources and the women who created them is what fascinates me most. Without knowing, each of the following five women helped lay the groundwork for what Lucie Kelly, RN, PhD, FAAN, eventually termed the eight characteristics of a profession
Getting into it, she briefly described on what her career was all about sounding vivid and enthusiastic. I asked her what her career is exactly, to which she said, “RN is an abbreviation for registered nurse, someone who has passed a state nursing license, who knows a large base of knowledge and promotes good health and helps patients.” RN roles can be anywhere from direct patient care, clinical research, and teaching nursing programs. Angelica wants to work in a clinic out of all those options. To her, all she wants is a quiet job and to not stay late at work once she starts a family.
I have always known I wanted to be a nurse ever since I was a little kid; one person I have to thank for my love in nursing is Jennifer Sanger. She has been my role model ever since I was a little girl and Mrs. Sanger has always taught me how to make it successfully through the nursing program and how to be an excellent nurse. When I think of an extraordinary nurse, I think of her and could not asked for a better person to look up too.
I started my Nursing career in India and then I came to the United States and became an RN. I entered Nursing with the thinking that Nursing is a profession that will always allow me to have a job and all my patients will get better. However, from my experiences I understood that Nursing is more than just giving medications, and it requires clinical competence, cultural sensitivity, ethics, caring for others, and life-long learning about others and the evolving field of medicine. Florence Nightingale once said:
Paige works as an APRN at Kings Daughter’s Medical Center. He is in the Vascular and General Surgical Department. Paige graduated with a Masters in Nursing FNP University of Cincinnati in 2011 and post master’s certification AGACNP Northern Kentucky University 2016.
My admiration for her however, does not come from the fact that she is simply a nurse, but instead from the fact that she has struggled throughout her life but used the adversity for her benefit. While in the midst of adverse situations my grandmother never gave up but instead she persevered through, and encourages everyone around her to do the same. I appreciate my grandmother because of the spirit of determination she evokes within me and everyone around her.Throughout my educational journey she has always been there to remind me that my goals are achievable, and when I feel as if i'm on the path of failure she reminds me that life’s greatest lessons are learned through the hardships we face. She gives motivation, wisdom, and advice to all the individuals she comes in contact with, especially adolescents, in order to teach them that their dreams are only around the corner and require a little extra elbow grease to be achieved. My grandmother has lived her life dedicated to being an asset to others, and overcoming the obstacles that face african american
My grandmother’s nurse served as an inspiration for me to pursue a career in nursing. When I was sixteen years old, my grandmother had her left knee surgically removed and replaced. After such a severe surgery, a nurse was called at my house to assist my grandmother for a few weeks. During her short stay with my grandmother, the nurse showed my father and me how to administer injections and medications, as well as how to act if my grandmother became unstable. It was astonishing to watch the nurse work so compassionately and genuinely care for a complete stranger. Not only did she directly contribute in enhancing my grandmother’s health, she was also able to provide our family with hope and confidence. Always having an interest in healthcare,
I believe that Nursing is a profession that is unique to the individual. My reasons for choosing such a profession is due to the fact that I have a desire to help others. Growing up with a very sick parent of whom I traveled back and forth over the years to many physician offices, lead me to develop my career path at an early age which was nursing. I watched the many doctors and nurses providing care to my mom in such a compassionate way, and as a result of the kindness they showed my sibling and me, I was very much aware this was as some may say, “my calling”. I had a conversation with my mom and told her that one day I was going to be a nurse so that I could care for her in the same manner that I saw the nurses and physicians caring for her. I wanted to
I define nursing as protecting, promoting, and optimizing a person’s health and abilities, alleviating their pain through diagnosis and evaluating the treatment of their response, and advocating for their care and their families. The interview definitely opened my eyes to view nursing from a different perspective, and how it can be an exhausting profession, but rewarding at the same time.
“A public health nurse is a nurse who works to promote and protect the health of an entire population” (Allender, Rector, & Warner, 2010, p. 839) the public health nurse I chose to interview was Barbara, she currently works for the Health department and has been there for three years. During the interview Barbara discussed the requirements for a public health nurse. The individual must have the ability to exercise independent judgment, planning and able to administer safe effective public nursing care. In addition be able to work effectively with individuals and families to assist them in the satisfactory solution of health problems, by recognizing and respecting of different cultural, ethnic and difference on health care practices. The nurse is also required to know disease prevention such as, different techniques on teaching, counseling, interviewing and resources available. Barbara stated that the most important part of being a public health nurse is being able to care. Barbara acknowledged that there are numerous individuals that she assists everyday that just want someone to exhibit that they care and understand. The education a public health nurse should obtain is a bachelor’s degree in nursing, which Barbara posses. “Public health nurses working with specific populations or in administration position should hold a master’s degree” ( Allender et al., 2010, p.839). Barbara discussed that before becoming a public health nurse she worked at St. Francis Hospital as med-surge nurse for five years, after that it was imperative that she change working environment. Barbara confirmed that working as a nurse in the hospital was extremely diverse then working as public health nurse. “Comparing public health nurse and general nurse, public health nursing is population based, focuses on the greater good, health promotion and disease prevention, and utilizes community resources. The general nursing is individual based, focuses on individual good, restoration of health and function, and manage resources at hand” (Minnesota Department of Health, 2007). In the beginning Barbara thought that public health nursing would be a difficult job to gain knowledge of however, she established that it was exceptionally effortless and gratifying career to posses. Barbara stated that she did not realize how much assistance was out there for the public until; she worked as public health nurse. Barbara spends 95% of her day going from place to place by doing home visits, investigating different cases, assisting with screening programs and enormous amount of paper work.
The Nurse spends a considerable amount of time with their patients. She has been molded into the role of advocating for the patients. Along with skills and knowledge
I asked Ms. Marquez why she choose nursing as her profession and why she opted for the position of a Hospice nurse. Ms. Marquez responded by saying that she has always wanted a career in which she will make
Naomi’s passion is nursing, and the fact that she had her goals set to becoming a nurse and work at Johns Hopkins Hospital is very similar to me having my heart set on working at Mayo Clinic when I obtain my degree. Naomi’s time was spent mostly between work and her family, and that is important to me because I put my family at the center of my world, just as she does. Naomi’s passion to be a nurse is highly reflective of my passion to become a nurse as well. She is willing to go the extra mile in order to become a better nurse for her patients, and that shows that she is truly passionate about what she is doing. Naomi’s strength when working with patients who are struggling, is what I hope to be. Naomi’s strength when she was struggling with her miscarriage is what made her a stronger nurse, and it is my hope that I can find the strength in my tough situations the way she found the strength to get her through her hardships. Naomi’s passion to be a good nurse, wife, and mom is what connects me greatly to her; her strength and compassion in the nursing field are what I strive to be, when I become a
She was my best example growing up and my motivation in becoming a nurse when I was growing up.
My reasons for selecting a career in nursing stem directly from my desire to help our prospering population and community. This career appeals to me because it embodies what I strive to become, a person of influence, a guide, a respected adult, a mentor, and a person that can be trusted and looked up to with great passion. Another reason for selecting a career in nursing has a lot to do with my current job position at Generations Elder Care. Working with the elderly community at this personal care home has enriched my life in many ways, including one for my passion of learning more about the nursing field. As I shadowed the nurses entering the facility I watched them do their assessments on the residents which has peaked my curiosity. I believe being a nurse presents daily challenges which are unique, interesting, and rewarding and that is another reason why I want to become a nurse. Knowing that I have helped someone in some way possible gives me a feeling of fulfillment and enjoyment that I never understood or had before. And this career offers just that, and that is exactly why I...
