According to Judy B. Rosener, Interactive Leadership is when the “leader favors a consensual and collaborative process, and influence derives from relationships rather than position power and authority”. (Rosener, 1990) She also says that it is more prominent in the ways women lead. Personally, it is more effective for me to have a leader that informs me of the vision and can describe with passion what the organization’s objectives are and draws me into the decision-making process.
I believe that this approach is increasingly important now due to the way millennials relate to leadership. According to a recent report by TINYpulse (Haden, 2016), millennials need to feel like they are developing and need to experience engagement and connection
with co-workers both in and out of the workplace. They need to feel that they are making a difference and have purpose. Interactive leadership is all about engaging, relationship, developing and coaching. The old school way of leadership by power does not work well with the millennial mentality. With many other age groups as well. As organizations are becoming more diverse, employees want to feel a sense of belonging and individual purpose in the workplace. To be an effective interactive leader, one must be authentically engaged and interested in their employees and their growth and development. If we take the time to understand and embrace the energy and talent of this influential generation charged with leading us through uncharted and turbulent waters of the 21st century by researching what kind of leadership they aspire to and connect with and whether a different leadership model - crafted from Gestalt methodologies - might better resonate , we may be in a better position to inform the path forward as OD professionals in designing and delivering relevant tools for dealing with the business turbulence of today by being attune to the needs of these future leaders of tomorrow.
The role of leadership has become increasing valuable for organizations to be successful. According to Huber (2014), Leadership can best be defined as method utilized to ensure that an objective is completed. There are many different types of leaderships that can be found within each organization. In this paper I will highlight an example of a specific leadership style that we come across in healthcare settings. I will review my leadership self-assessment results and discuss the impact of leadership on staff and groups.
My leadership style is primarily participative. Consultation contributes to more effective decisions leveraging the collective wisdom of the group, and, by soliciting their input, a greater degree of personal interest and satisfaction from participants (Yukl, 2013, p. 107). No one has all the answers, but together, in an open and trusting environment, all of us can collaborate toward a solution (Bennis, 2009, p. 133). Consultation and delegation within a shared philosophical framework serves to build support, personal investment, and leadership capacity amongst participants (Yukl, 2013, p. 384).
Leadership has always been a key to my success in life. In today's business world, effective leadership at all levels is required. I use the same concepts in leading my family, as I do in my business and church. Leadership does make a difference. For example, my daughter is required to take a leadership class at the freshman level of high school. It is my desire that through this course I will be able to use the research findings about leadership to improve my own leadership style.
The assignment for week four is to assess and review results from the Authentic Leadership Self Assessment Questionnaire. The ALQ was created to provide a means to assess the parameters of authentic leadership and to allow for opinion on the behaviors that encompass Authentic Leadership Style (Northouse, 2013). Basically, the questionnaire and the model allows and individual to understand how followers or people perceive leadership authenticity.
Leadership is being able to direct or guide other people by either your own actions or by actually guiding them into the right direction (Acumen). Inspiration to be a leader might come from many different areas like your family, friends, peers, or even teachers. My inspiration didn’t really occur to me until I started attending college in August 2013. In all actuality I never even thought of how to be a leader until I was in Mrs. Moore’s Perspectives class. I now have a desire to be a great leader, and the inspiration has come from Mrs. Moore, and my family. I am the first to attend college out of my family, so in a away I have already started leading my siblings in the right direction. Being a leader means inspiring others to pursue their dreams, and aspirations and helping throughout the journey to success. Being a leader has nothing with authority or being able to tell other what, and how to do things, it’s about having people who look up to you and want to follow your example.
Why would someone lead by example? Leading by example earns you respect.Working with people and not asking them to do everything for that person. Working together makes work or projects easier to do and complete.Leading by example makes most things more enjoyable; when the people working under someone know that the leader is willing to do any job to help complete the work. Leadership is when one person can do certain things to make people want to be a leader.
Out past in leadership has been so different then our present. Our past with some of the most noteworthy issues and trends in the field of leadership development in the past 20 years under these two general headings 1) The proliferation of leadership development methods; 2) The importance of a leader’s emotional resonance with and impact on others (Broome/Hughes). These 2 are the most important things for leaders, especially like it’s been with us for 20 years now. In first heading, Proliferation of Leadership Development Methods gives us Classroom- type leadership, Development relationships, Action learning, and challenging job assignments. Each one explains to us what we have used in our past and the skills we have used.
A leader’s age and generation plays a significant role in the way they communicate. When different generations come together they bring with them their own worldviews and expectations. An effective leader is able to step out of their generational preferences and customize the way they communicate to the other generations. By effectively addressing and taking advantage of those unique generational differences they can bridge the generations together to create a collaborative, innovative and exciting work environment resulting in a highly productive and performing workforce.
Millennials and NetGens differ from preceding generations when it comes to responding to power and influencing tactics. It can be very difficult in a high-tempo, military environment for a leader not to apply the “Take the Hill” approach – especially when most orders are given as a reactionary measure. Millennials identify with soft tactics, such as team building and inspiration. However, inspirational appeals must be viewed as genuine and in line with the leader’s own personal ethos. If it is not than the appeal will be seen as ingenuine and promptly dismissed by the subordinate. They are susceptible to appeals of inspiration to include the possibility of impacting the unit, making a difference, and changing the world.
Leadership can take many different forms, depending on the person and the situation in which it is needed. Collaborative leadership is a leadership style in which a leader brings together a large group of people, with a variety of backgrounds, to make a productive decision and act upon it. According to Chrislip and Larson (1994):
Leaders can have a powerful impact on the futures of many, and the way in which one approaches leadership is paramount to the type of impact one will have. Continual growth in the areas of knowledge I have and seek to acquire, as well as recognizing my leadership style and utilizing my personal strengths to the fullest, is vital to the successful implementation of my personal philosophy of leadership.

Many people associate leadership with a specific job title or form of power within an organization.
