After reading Intentional learning for college success, the term learn is defined as the continuous process of obtaining information and building upon what has previously been discovered through the use of various strategies. My views of learning have not changed significantly; however, I have a better understanding of the learning process. I have also come to understand that it takes a mindful and dedicated person to be an intentional learner who will apply him or herself in every way possible. After five weeks of class I have grown to be a smarter learner.
One of the ways I have become an intentional learner is by identifying my learning patterns through the Learning Connections Inventory (LCI) and understanding how those patterns play a role in my academic and professional life. My LCI scores include:

As I stated in my previous assignments, I am an unintentional procrastinator. I feel failure so much that I tend to put off assignments until the last minute and turn them in late. I should have used the concept of FITing in my Learning Patters to ensure my success by having a better understanding of the concept. I must admit the first time I read the chapter on FITing I did not fully understand it. Though, it was not until the second time I read the chapter that I had a better understanding.
In conclusion, these past few weeks have been both rewarding and challenging. The one aspect I have enjoyed about this class is gaining new knowledge and expanding on what I already knew. The most difficult aspect was not being in a physical classroom with my peers and professors. My expectations of online learning included getting a quality education and a challenge. My expectations were not met because I have only been a part of the Ashford online community for five weeks. However, I am very hopeful this will change as I continue on this
As Zig Ziglar once said, "If you are not willing to learn, no one can help you. If you are determined to learn, no one can stop you." Basically, Ziglar is emphasizing how learning can be accomplished, only if you put your mind to it. In “Learning (Your First Job),” Dr. Robert Leamnson shares his strong belief of beginning students entering the post-secondary education. Leamnnson discusses the many ways of learning that can be used in college, such as studying, notes, assignments, and exams. Leamnson continuously discusses how no one will learn unless they want to. Learning is a biological process that relies on the brain. Just like how our bodies need maintenance, the brain does too. College is a place where you learn things that help you later. Leamnson mentions how students are responsible for succeeding in college not by just showing up, but by putting in effort towards the classes they are taking. In order to succeed in the learning of the post-secondary education process, students should be aware of how to make notes, understand what they are studying, and take assignments seriously.
Learning, like religion, is a social experience.” Currently, I have a class that I am enrolled in, often I find myself asking “Why I am in this class?” I learn nothing from this lady, her notes are continuously blurry, and every single student is unable to read them. She talks in circles and expects everyone to be able to follow. Personally, I wish I would have taken an online course for this particular class. Everything I have learned in this class has been solely self-taught. To be prepared for the class, I pre-read the chapter we will be having a discussion about in addition to study the curriculum, still I cannot keep up or understand what is coming out of her mouth. I also feel that I am not the only one in class that is completely lost, which makes me feel better about the whole situation. Whereas I am also enrolled in another class, which I adore and value every single minute. This particular class requires an hour and forty-five minutes a day for four days a week. To think this class I feared the most when I enrolled at the beginning of school. Surprisingly now, it is by far my favorite! I have learned so much information in such a little span of time. It is truly remarkable, the change of mind I have had towards this subject! Credit is due to my professor, she is outstanding! Then, of course, I have this class! Comp 1, which as you know is online. There has been struggles, as I think I would have learned better with face to face encounters with my peers and involved discussion with other students and a professor, although I think I have managed to keep my head above the water so far. All- together, with only my brief personal experience given, you cannot say online courses are worse than an in class
During my first semester of college, I felt like this course overshadowed all the others. I faced many challenges, gained better habits, and even increased the value of myself as a scholar. Not only did my professor provide her students with the course material she built a confidence inside of us that will allow us to be able to tackle any task, especially pertaining to any written compositions. The things that I have learned from this course could and will be applied to any and everything I do from here on out, whether that writing an essay or even taking a test. Again, the journey was long, but I will be forever grateful for the things that I, and all of my peers have gained from this
According to Moreno (2010) , the term “learning”, can be defined as a “relatively permanent change in our thoughts, feelings, or behavior that results from experience “ (p.150)
I learned that I have a control issue and that my OCD gets in the way. I am not going to lie I contemplated several times about quitting online learning. I felt that I was not as smart as others are and when I would not get good feedback, I started to doubt my ability to go on. I am afraid to consult with my instructor for the fact of sounding less intelligent. When you got assignments that did not make sense that was because I was afraid to ask. What I enjoyed most about this class was getting a better understanding of what type of learner I am, and why I do the things I do. I never knew there was even a test that could tell you what type of learner you are. What I would change about this class is nothing. This class made you think about your learning. It did that plus some. My expectations were met because this class had a purpose to show each of us what kind of learners we are. It changed my mindset and it met my expectations
1In the article, The Critical Importance of Retrieval for Learning, Jeffery D. Karpicke and Henry L. Roediger III expound on the long standing assumptions regarding the effects of repeated studying and repeated testing on learning in order to improve long-term retention on learning material. Recently studies have shown that research can occur during testing, contradictory to the traditional beliefs that learning occurs while people study and encode material. Another purpose of this research and this article was to examine a students’ assessments of their own learning, after getting a set of material under repeated study or repeated testing. Finally, The Critical Importance of Retrieval for Learning, explained further the relationship of speed
As we always believe that everything is easy and nothing is impossible for us, until, we realize that we are doomed. In fact, this is a big problem among students, since, many end up failing their courses for this cause. Honestly, I don’t know what I was thinking at the time I chose this and my other mini-term class, all I can say is that this was a very hard six-week journey for me. Although, the professors made it very clear on what to expect, I like many others, accepted the challenge without thinking about the consequences this could bring. Don’t panic, it was not as bad as it seems either, because I had the chance to learn a lot of new things that will definitely help me forge my future. I don’t regret taking this class at all, despite all the setbacks, I had the pleasure of meeting a wonderful professor who patiently made our journey more bearable, and my classmates that somehow always contribute to my
I have so many fond memories and each time I reminisce about my classroom time at the academy all I can do is smile. I prefer the setup up of a physical classroom opposed to virtual, or online instruction. I know this may sound contradictory considering that I am about to begin an online world campus program, but I still prefer the classroom. The classroom affords students the opportunity to exchange ideas and past experiences on a more personal level. In my opinion, it is superior to the written interaction and discussion that is necessary with online programs. The difference of opinions in the classroom is as varied as the number of students in seats. In an online setting students can easily dismiss or ignore ideas that they disagree with. This is not so easily done in a physical setting. In this manner, I feel that students in the classroom have a broader and more fulfilling experience, I am very much looking forward to my first class. As varied as the ideas exchanged will be, so are the
We have a Dynamic Learner here with Sequence-20 as needed, Precision-16 as needed, Techncial-32 use first, Confluent -20 as needed.
Learning refers to the process of gaining knowledge. Learning can occur through hands-on activities, experiences, and the studying of content. The learning process can be facilitated by giving students the resources needed to become knowledgeable citizens who actively contribute to their communities. By creating a classroom environment that promotes free thought, creativity, and individuality, students will be in an environment where they will learn and develop. By working in small groups, the students will learn skills that relate to social development, teamwork, and the diversity of others within the same community. My experiences have influenced my beliefs about learning in that I am not the type of student that can learn effectively though note-taking. I learn best through hands-on activities and group discussion, rather than lectures and essays. The learning environment is imperative for facilitating a place where students will want to learn and expand their knowledge.
When students are deciding on where to go to college, they have the option of choosing between online classes and the traditional classroom classes. Today, some students are finding it much easier to maintain a job, family and start a college career, all by taking online classes. Although some students still prefer to stick with the traditional classroom classes, they still have the option to take online classes. Both online and the traditional classes will provide the educational requirements needed to obtain a college degree and opportunities in the work field. Although the online classes offer just as much as the traditional classes, they are completely different when it comes to teaching methods, course material and time.
Chris Jackson’s Hybrid Model of Learning is based on a theory of learning and encompasses the credence that there is a common biological foundation in relation to positive and negative outcomes within the work environment, education and wide-ranging population, thus he fashioned a model arguably capable to predict one’s functional and dysfunctional performance within the workplace based on their personality and learning style. It is deemed a hybrid model as it combines biological principles of personality with individual cognitions and experiential instruments of learning used to control, discipline and re-express the biologically constructed scale of sensation seeking necessary for functional learning. These socio-cognitive mechanisms are divided into the ensuing five learning styles, Emotional Intelligence, Conscientiousness, Deep Learning, Sensation Seeking and Goal Orientation. These learning styles reflect dissimilar parts of the learning process but are also interdependent. Each style hints to a specific form of activity, which can, on scarce occasions, emerge to be analogous.
Everyone has a different view on how they learn and learning itself. First starting in EXP 105, my understanding of learning was new knowledge and becoming wiser. Taking EXP 105 has truly increased my knowledge of what learning is and the process of it. The most important thing I have learned about learning is that you observe the world around you, make sure it is understandable, and figure out the right way to respond. Learning also provides critical thinking skills. Everyone have different ways of learning and those ways are based on four different learning patterns. The four different types of learning patterns are Sequence, Precision, Technical Reasoning, and Confluence. Learning patterns are very helpful when it comes to everyday life, school work, and your job. Knowing your learning patterns and which ones you should use make
In the undergraduate educational setting, student proficiency and comfort with technology are stressed, but the essential mission of most undergraduate institutions (especially, liberal arts institutions such as Dartmouth) is on the development of the individual. The nurturing and supportive environment of most undergraduate institutions helps students mature and develop. The rave and fad of online undergraduate learning causes students to miss out on too many intangibles of an on-campus education. Our current theory on education hasn’t adequately dealt with the intricacies of a web-based education, and therefore the effectiveness of such is highly questionable.
Learning is a process that involves effort and hard work, but it definitely pays off in the long run. Once a foundation is set on how to become a better student, the student with the foundation is set up for success. A student should be taught methods on how to become better at concepts related to success attained at the college level because it helps the student out so much once he or she knows how to effectively study. While studying might seem tedious and overwhelming at time, it can be proven to be instrumental if a person knows how to effectively do it and get the most out of it. I strongly believe that learning never ends, and a person can continue to learn new things as long as he or she lives. I consider myself to be a lifelong learner,
