A) This class has taught me what kind of learner I am. I found out that I am a strong willed learner by taking the Learning Connections Inventory test. This test teaches you about your learning patterns, which help you, become a better critical thinker, reader and writer. The LCI test will break down how you learn and show you which skill you; use first, use as needed, or avoid. These patterns are called sequence, precision, technical reasoning, and confluence. Once you finish with the test your scores will show you what kind of learner you are, such as strong willed learner, dynamic learner, or bridge learner. I have learned from this class which patterns I am stronger in and which patterns I avoid. I now know how to use each pattern to its full potential, and how to use multiple patterns at any given time. B) I typically use my LCI patterns to make my life flow with ease. I find that I use more of technical reasoning and sequence in my day-to-day activities. I am the type of learner that learns hands on (technical reasoning) and I always have a daily checklist of things that need to be done (sequence). My LCI score were sequence 30, precision 32, technical reasoning 23, and confluence 25. I use my sequence pattern on a use first basis. Sometimes these patterns need to be calmed down. Sometimes I might be too confident, or my OCD might make me crazy trying to have everything done just right. Sometimes I might stress a bit much on trying to cross off everything on my do list, especially trying to do it before I go home each day. With confluence, I would intensify it. The biggest lesson I learn during this class is time management. I have a 9 month old baby and he allows wants my attention. I had to rely on a family member to take care of him while I get a few hours to read the textbook and do the writing assignments. I had to truly focus on my work and not go to social sites because I barely had time to do so.
Learning, like religion, is a social experience.” Currently, I have a class that I am enrolled in, often I find myself asking “Why I am in this class?” I learn nothing from this lady, her notes are continuously blurry, and every single student is unable to read them. She talks in circles and expects everyone to be able to follow. Personally, I wish I would have taken an online course for this particular class. Everything I have learned in this class has been solely self-taught. To be prepared for the class, I pre-read the chapter we will be having a discussion about in addition to study the curriculum, still I cannot keep up or understand what is coming out of her mouth. I also feel that I am not the only one in class that is completely lost, which makes me feel better about the whole situation. Whereas I am also enrolled in another class, which I adore and value every single minute. This particular class requires an hour and forty-five minutes a day for four days a week. To think this class I feared the most when I enrolled at the beginning of school. Surprisingly now, it is by far my favorite! I have learned so much information in such a little span of time. It is truly remarkable, the change of mind I have had towards this subject! Credit is due to my professor, she is outstanding! Then, of course, I have this class! Comp 1, which as you know is online. There has been struggles, as I think I would have learned better with face to face encounters with my peers and involved discussion with other students and a professor, although I think I have managed to keep my head above the water so far. The purpose of the Myers-Biggs Type Indicator personality type is to make the philosophy of psychological indicators defined by C.G Jung comprehensible and beneficial to people. On the other hand, several people realize that every individual prefers diverse learning styles and methods, which is the common way of learning. According to Howard Gardner, to lengthen the learning ability of people, more cognizance needs to be given to different learning style that people will prefer to receive data. There are different types of personality indicator and learning styles, but based on this assignment, I am going to describe two personality types and three learning styles.
I am a very hand on type of learner. I understand and remember much easier if I physically do it. I am one to never sit still for too long. I am a visual person I can remember things more if I see it over and over again. When taking a test I try to close my eyes and visualize what part of the book I saw that question and what was going on at the time to help. When looking at not just this class but all of my classes and looking at how I have been approaching them versus how I should approach them it definitely puts my mind in a different perspective because I am a person that “strives for excellence” and if I am able to “ace” a class then I definitely try and do that but a lot of the time that doesn’t mean sitting there and actually learning the information it means
Being labeled a strong willed learner works for me. I see now that going to school online is the best solution for me. I can work alone; do things my way when it comes to projects and study using my own way. This survey opened my eyes to also see what needs to be changed about myself as well. The two tests that I have done have pretty much accurately described what kind of learner I am. VARK model states that my dominant learning style is Kinesthetic. Kinesthetic learners learn by doing things physically with hands on experience rather than listening to someone else. I tend to move around a lot when remembering or revising for an exam which helps me express a thought or understand a subject through bodily movement. My other style is Linguistic and Spatial Visual learning. It is easier for me to grasp the meaning of things by visually understanding a concept with the help of graphs, pictures, videos, etc or taking notes as I learn. In the beginning of the semester, I thought it would be enjoyable to take Anatomy and Physiology since I had already taken it in high school and actually received a high grade. I had heard from many students that this class is much harder in college and will often have a big lecture setting with more than three-hundred students, but I brushed this off and went into the classroom with a positive attitude. There are many differences in taking an online class and a traditional class, time, communication, teacher student ratio time and the teaching methods. Both courses still have some similarities between them and what they require the student to do. Both classes have its pros and cons on deciding what to take. Most people still prefer to take the traditional classes because the traditional classes offer a lot more than online classes. Even though online can be more convenient for some student it might not fit their needs, not having a teacher in front of them teaching can be very hard for them to learn.
The results from my personal learning test did not surprise me due to the knowledge I have of myself and the ways I learn. When looking at the preference between learning styles, my personal choice would have to be active learning because I understand material and remember aspects of the content better when doing an activity. Reflective learning is not for me because I like to collaborate ideas with other classmates and create one common idea of what is happening. Although I do like to do most activities in a group, there are time in my academic career where reflective learning is what I preferred to do since I wanted to work alone and get the work done how I wanted it. Now that I have developed an active learning personality, my knowledge of myself and other people have grown. After I took the online test, my results stated that my preference for active learning matched my learning style very well. Active learning received my highest score which showed that I am an active learner which I already knew. As I have come to realization, college does not always benefit the active learning personality. One thing that Richard M. Felder states in his paper Learning Styles and Strategies, “study in a group in which the members take turns explaining different topics to each other then work with others to guess what you will be asked on the next test and figure out how you will answer the questions.” (Felder). I have enjoyed many things about this class. One of the things that I have enjoyed was finding out about my learning patterns. I enjoyed finding out about my learning patterns because it has helped me so much in my life. I can have a conversation with someone and will try and figure out how they learn. To build an online course there must be a process; this process needs to incorporate the methods of instructional design and applying these components into an online format. The overall end result is that the student learning outcomes are developed into instructional activities used for learning. Key decisions were made into developing the online design. Part of the process included documentation as to the online design, methods for interactivity, number of contacts with the faculty-member, and methods for online assessment and evaluation.
