Intellectual Humility in the Education World Every teacher has their own bias. The people who write state standards and state tests also have biases. Students are biased on what they think they need to pay attention to in class. Teachers, state governments and students all believe that they know what is best for themselves or other people. None of these groups like to be told that they are wrong in the way they are teaching, writing and learning. However, it is still necessary to remain open to criticism because criticism may lead to an improvement down the road that one group could be thanking the other group for. Smith believing that I would not want a fancy Smart Board or an iPad to help me in my lessons. This opinion came from the facts on Smart Boards I was hearing in my classes. The only facts I heard were all the benefits of a Smart Board and I did not like how the teachers made it sound like technology was now the best route to go because of so many opportunities that came with it. I knew that there were other ways to be able to teach students depending on the student’s learning style. Technology would cost money and I was afraid that students would be discouraged from dreaming and learning big because technology could do everything for them. At this point, I had to be intellectually humble and recognize that there are people who think differently about this issue than I do. When it came time to do my research I chose to set aside my bias and look for how teachers actually felt about technology and the opportunities it could present for their classroom. I found one article where teachers used technology in science classes and noticed a new interest in learning because of the opportunities they were being given with the Smart Board. I also found an article where elementary teachers were concerned about the technology because of warranty even though they did recognize the usefulness of some of the material. Even though my opinion did not change, I am more aware about the uses technology can have in the classroom and how other people think about this issue. Society has evolved culturally since the 6th century. Indisputably, all too many families find themselves making the difficult decisions to place their loved ones in a nursing home facility. In the past, technology was something that was only used in our homes and by the wealthy. However, this has become a thing of the past. Classrooms have become more interactive and lessons seem to be more engaging. Students have been given the opportunity to use Smart Boards, document cameras, projectors, and wireless slates. In order for our students to feel comfortable, when using the different technologies, they must have some amount of background knowledge. If a student is not given this background knowledge, they will have more difficulty utilizing the technology than someone who has the background knowledge. Teachers in classrooms today must also have some type of knowledge of the technology being used. A great way to build this knowledge is to attend training sessions that your district may be holding, and utilize the technology as much as possible.
This cycle of obedience and passive acceptance can spill over into other aspects of life where learners conform to beliefs and values without critically evaluating them. Brian Crittenden (1972: 146) speaks about “mis-education” which occurs when the content the teacher presents is a “violation of a ‘critical inquiry”. In other words the teacher presents information is such a way as to exclude any opportunity for enquiry.
Wisdom comes with experience, engorging oneself in many opportunities comes with its mistakes. If one can comes out of a bad experience with some sort of knowledge that will help them, or teach them anything, it was not something to be ashamed of.
There are critics on both sides of the argument of effective use when it comes to technology. Some argue that test scores have not supported the idea that technology use increases student learning, that this technology movement is simply another bandwagon fad. Instead of the traditional whiteboard or chalkboard that have been common in most classrooms, Smart Boards have been implemented in all levels of education from elementary to the university level. Smart Boards helps kids improve academically because it is an interactive board which provides teachers with multiple ways to teach as well as engage the entire class. The New Brunswick Department of Education and Park Street School conducted a research study on how Smart Boards impacted kids academically in a school wide district. In a summarized report, the research found that 76.5% of teachers believe that Smart Boards caused students to be more engaged. Also, the study showed that 70.6% of the teachers in the research stated they strongly agreed that Smart Board white boards should be a part of a class room. The inclusion of Smart Board helps students academically through a new style of learning. Teachers are given more options to engage their class with different lesson plans with an interactive whiteboard. Smart Boards functions like a regular whiteboard but provides students and teachers with various uses such as touch screen, use of all media, and group games. The Smart Board also helps students academically as it combines a whiteboard and projector at the same time making it easier for students to interact in class. Integration of technology in class has become popular as technology has advanced dramatically in the past decade. However, the increase in technology devices in schools is not effective if the instructor does not implement it in their class. In order for these devices to benefit students academically, teachers must be educated and taught on the devices that they implement. A survey done by the University of Texas at Brownsville concluded that teachers who know how to use the electronic device are more inclined to implement the device in their class (Butler). An integration of
