To begin I want to thank all of you for your cooperation and participation in helping me complete this assignment. I know how important your time is and I appreciate you giving me a few minutes of it.
How many people are hamburglars? You know, that character seen in the McDonald’s commercials. And like him, you just cannot resist a good hamburger with all of its fixings and oh, let’s not forget those fries. Well, I love hamburgers, fat, and juicy with cheese, blue cheese, relish, onions, pickles, tomatoes, peppers and lettuce on a sesame seed bun.
Working two jobs, McDonalds was my favorite food source and after eating so many hamburgers, I want to show you what I looked like----SHOW POSTER-----Pause.

Poor eating habits and lack of exercise are the main contributors of this preventable problem. Michele Obama declared war on obesity and is the founder of the “Let’s Move Campaign” which promotes exercise and better nutrition.
So, as hard as it may be to change; change in eating habits and exercise can help control and even prevent the health issues. Eating more vegetables, especially green leafy vegetables, and cutting out or cutting down on the sugar intake, as well as the consumption of dairy products, has helped me to control my high blood pressure and diabetes. I have also tried juicing and found it to be very effective but also an expensive way to a healthy immune system.
My doctor said to me, “Sudberry, eat beans, eat more beans”. And so, they too are included in my diet. Our brains function a lot better if we feed our bodies healthier foods. Circulation in much improved, our abilities to exercise is improved because we have more energy, and our interactions with others is improved as we feel better about ourselves. Even our clothes look and fit better. And the biggest benefit of all is we just plain feel
Obesity is a huge problem that needs to be resolved because it affects all people, unlike most issues. People of every gender, every age, and every race are at risk of being obese. Obesity rates in America have nearly doubled within the last twenty years. Something must be done not only to prevent obesity rates continuous rising, but also to dramatically increase the percentage of obese people in America altogether.
Tom Harkin, US congressman from Iowa, says that obesity now contributes to the death of more than 360,000 Americans a year. The incidence of childhood obesity is now at epidemic levels. Alarm bells are going off all over the place, but our government has basically done nothing. The obesity rate has risen to epidemic proportions in the United States. Communities across the country, recognizing obesity as an issue of serious public health concern, are looking for innovative ways to halt the increasing rate of obesity (Davis 260). The rising prevalence of childhood and adult obesity can be explained in part by changes in our environment over the last 30 years; in particular, the unlimited supply of convenient, highly palatable and energy-dense foods, coupled with a lifestyle typified by low physical activity (Farooqui 5-7). Childhood obesity in America is a growing epidemic--because of advertisement of fast food, lack of physical activities, and parental control--that has lasting psychological effects.
The obesity epidemic is one of the most pressing issues at this point in both American society and U.S. public policy initiatives. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention 35.9% of U.S. adults over the age of twenty are obese (CDC, 2013). The CDC further notes that 69.2% of U.S. adults twenty years of age and over are overweight (this percentage includes those who are obese). The obesity problem is not exclusive to the adults in the U.S. The CDC notes that 18.4% of adolescents between the ages of 12 and 19 are currently obese (CDC, 2013). These statistics illustrate the severity of the obesity epidemic in this country, but what can be done to address or even correct this problem? Many people have proposed solutions, but few are as radical as the proposal from Michael Bloomberg (the New York City Mayor) in 2012.
A recent study in 2015 reports that over 15 million people in America have food allergies that is 1 in every 13 people under the age of 18. Making it very likely that somebody in this room is part of these 15 million American’s who have food allergies. If you are somebody who has food allergies, or you know of someone who has food allergies, this speech will help you better understand more about food allergies, so you can deal with food allergies and more importantly be more careful around other people who do. So today, I am going to be informing you about Food allergies.
The primary causes of the obesity epidemic is generally an excessive amount of caloric intake, unhealthy eating habits, and lack of physical exercise (“Obesity in latino,” 2006). Obesity in this minority group causes many underlying health issues such as high blood pressure, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, and some forms of cancers. Obesity not only effects the wellbeing of individuals, but also has an economic burden on society and healthcare.

In 1998, McDonald’s, in order to remain strong, tested the “McDonald’s Big Xtras” or “MBX” which was a potential hit. The “MBX” was a 4.5-ounce burger launched mainly to compete with Burger King’s “Whopper”. It was also reminiscent of the1980s “McDLT”, In ’98; they also brought back the “Filet-O-Fish” which in 1996 had been replaced by “Fish Filet Deluxe”. On a promotion basis, they offered novelty sandwiches, like “Cheddar Melt” and the “McRib”.

The understanding of food influences a persons decision on what to eat on a daily basis. The understanding of food can also be broken down into five categories: health, body image, race, class, and gender. These factors pressure people on not only what to eat but also where to eat. The BK Veggie Burger has an interesting background as well as challenges all the factors noted. It was brought to the United States menu in 2013, while being available on menus across other countries, such as India. The burger is comprised of a MorningStar Farms Garden Veggie Patty and topped with lettuce, tomatoes, white onions, pickles, ketchup and mayo topped with a toasted sesame seed bun. Burger King is using the MorningStar patty for the first couple of years until they see sustainable profit for the veggie burger. The BK Veggie Burger along with Burger King has now created an interesting argument on healthy foods in fast food chains. The BK Veggie Burger challenges the way people view a meal through not only health, body image, race, class, and gender but also from an author’s opinion and portrayal of what is and isn 't
Many folks who become obese are people who abuse the calories their body needs on a daily diet. As stated in “Overweight and Obesity Statistics”, everyone body needs a certain amount of energy from foods to have a proper balance. If the calories you have eaten sum up to the amount of calories you have used or have not burnt, you will start to have a problem if this eating habit continues. You will now be in the stage of overweight, if you do not burn the extra calories you consumer. In March 2004 the CDC publishes a study showing that poor eating habits and lack of exercise were the second leading death in the Untied States (“Chronology”). For example, one major reason why people become obese in America is because the environment is full of fast food restaurants. If you look to your left you will see McDonald’s, you look to your right, and you see Jack in The Box, you look behind you and there is Carl’s Jr, and if you look in front of you and you see a Burger King. According to the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, “17% of children and adolescents (aged 2-19) are obese. The prevalence of obesity in America has risen dramatically over the past two decades and continues to increase” (qtd. “Weight Control and Diet”). Face it, we have all heard the phrase,"You are what you eat" countless times in your life, but what does that truly mean. Every few months or years, millions go into trying new diets and diet pills but fail to understand why they cannot continue to eat healthy after their first few days on their new diet. Well, 1) the word "DIE" is in diet 2) no matter where you look you 're going to find delicious food ads and junk food and 3) you don 't have support.
Obesity is an issue that most people may be aware of, but I don't feel like many people actually know the ins and outs of it and how bad it really is. Although the speech that Jamie Oliver gave was about teaching children about food, I feel as if we need to teach adults about food just as much as children.
Healthy living is a change not everyone is willing to do. Even with small replacements in your daily life, you can start to see big changes in how your body starts working. Maintaining a healthy life style can benefit your life in many ways. Being healthy can improve your bodies ability to stand against infections or diseases. It can also aid in giving you more energy, as well as helping you sleep better. Another advantage to keeping a healthy life style is you'll be stronger, and feel better about the way your body feels. Despite the overly expensive food or the pricey monthly bills from the gym you hardly go too, simple steps can assist you in living a long healthy life without the extra effort.
I won’t ask who has gained this weight, but by a raise of hands, how many of you have thought to yourself, “Are my jeans getting tighter?”
