Prior to September 11th, 2001, airport security was a breeze. You gathered your things you wanted to bring on your trip/vacation/whatever it may be, and that was it. You boarded the plane and you were on your way to your destination. All that was required of you was to show proper identification. Unfortunately, nobody thought to intensify this process until these horrific events occurred. Four passenger planes were taken over by a total of 19 hijackers, all of whom brought sharp objects on the plane in order to take control. This proved to be relatively simple due to the pilots not being permitted to carry a firearm at this time. On this tragic day, 2,977 civilians lost their lives. Each individual was able to board the aircraft and bring onboard explosives, knives, and other weapons with no problem at all. Airport security pre – 9/11 was essentially a joke. Passengers and pilots were even able to smoke in the cabin until 1990. How someone didn’t realize that one carless accident with a cigarette could bring down an entire plane is beyond me and beside the point. However, the fact that explosives and knives and other weapons could be brought onto four aircrafts by 19 different men is nothing but scary. Prior to the attacks, no tickets were needed to gain entry into many of the major terminals; it is theorized many other accomplices of the attacks who did not board the planes but still apart of the attacks were at the airports that morning. Months before 9/11, “three eyewitnesses spotted al Qaeda hijackers casing the security checkpoints at Boston’s Logan Airport months before the 9/11 attacks. They saw something and said something — but were ignored, newly unveiled court papers reveal.” Even though there was truly minimal security before and on 9/11, you would hopefully think that security would be able to stop these terrorists or become the least bit suspicious. An American Airlines employee questioned who later was identified a ‘hijacking ringleader”, better known as Mohamed Atta, after he saw him videotaping the security checkpoint process at Logan Airport in Boston. There are a bunch of conspiracies in this world and there's a few on the tragedy that happened on September 11, 2001. One of the theories is that inside traders knew about the attacks before they happened. As said in an article, “in the days before 9/11 there was a huge increase in the number of put options purchased on their airlines, compared to the normal average daily volume.”(Davis) Before I explain what that means the article also mentioned, “ this huge increase in the volume of put options suggests that the people buying these put options knew in advance that 9/11 was about to happen.” (Davis) What the quotes are saying, is that a few days before 9/11, out of nowhere, there was an huge increase in the airlines, that were hijacked, stock markets. The conspiracy theory is that the government was aware of the attacks the entire time but because they were making profit, this did nothing about it.

As the 19 hijackers made their way through the three East coast airports, on September 11, 2001, planning on executing the world’s worst terrorist attack in history, they test the U.S airport security. On September 11, 2001 terrorists crashed two American airline airplanes into Twin Towers, killing thousands of people. It was the worst terrorist attack in American history and it showed us that we are not protected by Atlantic and Pacific. It showed us that we could be attacked by anyone at anytime. It showed us that if we will be attacked again that we can only depend on each other and not on other nations to help us. September 11, 2001 is known as the worst terrorist attack in United States history. On a clear Tuesday morning, there were four planes that were hijacked and flown into multiple buildings by a terrorist group named al Qaeda. This group, led by Osama bin Laden, killed nearly 3,000 people. Out of those 3,000 people more than 400 police and 343 firefighters were killed along with 10,000 people who were treated for severe injuries. Many lives were taken, and to this day, people still suffer from the attack. September 11th is the most influential event of the early twenty-first century because it made an increase in patriotism, it caused a rise in security throughout the nation, and it had a tremendous effect of thousands of lives.
To help insure that no other terrorist attack happens again, the government funded a new agency called the Department of Homeland Security. Under the Department of Homeland Security is a branch called the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). The TSA was established to make sure that no one carried weapons aboard an aircraft for terrorism related uses. When the TSA was established they realized that security was very weak, and could use new machines to help screen for weapons. Before 9/11 the security of the airports was just simply go through a metal detector to see who had guns or could be a possible hijacker, there wasn’t much importance to it. There wasn’t much requirment to what you needed to have or show to fly and this is how Al-Qaeda, a terrorist group, took advantage to hijack the plane with the most fuel. Security back then wasn’t really enforced as it is now ever since the 9/11 attack happened a lot of things changed in the airport security to try and avoid another nightmare for America.

As a way to assure the safety and wellbeing of U.S. citizens shortly after being attacked by al-Qaeda, President Bush stated, “Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America. Although President Bush was seen a source of security during a time of need, many citizens felt that his words were not genuine and part of a dramatic story the government wanted its people to believe. A horrible act viewed by many, where 4 ill-fated planes were hijacked and propelled into important super-structures, and pastures, is broadcasted on the news on every anniversary of this travesty, and every time, eye-witness stories show up. These stories are often talked about for a large amount of time, but with the numerous accounts of that fateful day, nobody can get all of their stories. I would like to show you some of the most obscure stories that are often overlooked by many. From people in a different country, people right in the tower, and residents of the island of Manhattan, everyone was affected on that fateful day, so what exactly are those stories?
9/11 was one of the darkest days in America, but some say the government could have been part of these attacks. For many years people have debated about the 9/11 cover up. This theory cannot explain why the government would do this. Once people understand why the 9/11 cover up is fake, they will begin to see the answer to their problem, could the government have done this? This conspiracy theory is wrong because, terrorists admitted to the attacks, so many people died, and there's no evidence against the government.
How were these terrorists allowed to board these planes with the weapons that they used for the take over? There is an easy answer to that question: airport security was virtually nonexistent. Anyone could be in the terminal. Friends and family could be with the passenger up to the time that the passenger went through the gate. However, since that fateful day, security has been tighter at the airports. Now, before passengers board a plane, they have to go through an x-ray machine and a metal detector before entering the terminal. Sometimes they have to go through random searches at the plane's gate. One question raised from the tighter security measures is whether these security measures invade people's personal rights.
It was our job to act before it was too late, but we can act now because tomorrow is too late. According to USA Today news article it expresses, “WASHINGTON— More than one in 10 of the nation's airline pilots are cleared to carry a handgun while flying, and the number will continue to grow, according to a Transportation Security Administration projection” (Frank). These statistics are not going to protect us from the inevitable attacks that are just waiting to happen. According to these statistics only 10% of the planes are actually being armed, leaving 90% of the flights vulnerable against any future attacks. It is time for us to now take a stand, now is the time that we must get off the sidelines and speak out.
Those men managed to get past our high tech security systems and onto those planes. Thousands of innocent people lost their lives because some men smarted out fool proof system. The creators of airport security must have been unfamiliar with the saying, "where there’s a will, there’s a way." No one wants to admit to himself or herself, or anyone else for that matter, that sick people who thrive on pain and suffering, really do exist. Because airport security creators didn’t think about this fact, or they thought about it and chose to ignore it, innocent people lost their lives.
It was the rash of airline hijackings in the 60s-70s that inspired the use of metal detectors at the airport to prevent passengers from bringing onboard any weapons they may use to hijack the plane. As airport security gets tighter terrorists are plotting to defeat those security measures. Airport metal detectors are just a speed bump and many other measures had to be put in place to ensure people are able to travel safely. Airport security continues to get more advanced.
