Before you leave on that next trip, pick up a spiral bound notebook and stick it in your carry-on bag along with your passport and toothbrush. Besides a pen and a bit of commitment, it's all you need to keep a travel journal. You don't need to commit to writing indefinitely, only for the length of your trip. And you have no shortage of material. Strange places and new faces need a safe repository, something better than your errant memory. Your journal is that place. The very act of keeping a journal will enrich your journey. Knowing that you are going to write down what you observe makes you more observant. You'll stay attuned to the world, senses alert, recording moments in your mind so you can transcribe them later into your notebook. I can hear you groaning, "But …show more content…
Don't worry about being "correct." Forget that sour-faced junior high English teacher who attacked your essays with her red pen. This is your journal. No one will else ever has to read it. Write about what really interests you, whether it seems "important" or not. Everybody's different. Some people like facts and figures, names and dates. They write that the Tower of London was built by William the Conqueror in 1078. Other folks on that same trip write that their guide's Cockney accent was off-putting and how that woman from Miami wore short shorts so revealing that the Beefeater guards nearly lost their famous composure. I have a friend who records every bird she sees. Jot down the details you'll want to recall later. This is especially important if you take photos. Back home, when you're downloading the pictures in your computer, a bad case of detail overload has usually set in. Hmmm. Was that quaint little church in Brussels or Bruges? And did it have a name? Your journal will tell you. Remain flexible. Your journal should not be a chore. Whenever you get some spare moments will do: before bedtime, after breakfast, or while waiting for your spouse to finish browsing through the Hockey Hall of
Today many people have a very fixed view about others in different countries, and what the locals from those countries think about Americans. America was formed so people from other cultures could come and make a life for themselves, and so they could come and enjoy the traditions and ways of America. If people could stop and think about all the good things that other countries have to offer instead of all the bad that the media shows, they could learn to appreciate those countries better. People need to be more open minded about going to other countries because without travel there would be no way of learning about other cultures.
Travel writers or adventurers all write pieces that deal with the same premise: the discovery and experience of the New World. However, in their writing, it is evident that there is an ulterior motive in mind. These motives or purposes can be classified in two broad categories: to persuade people to come to the new world and to warn people of the dangers they may encounter in the new world. It is easy to explore these themes by paying particular attention a couple of notorious writers: Christopher Columbus, Bartolome De Las Casas, and John Smith.
The strengths in my writing are my organizational skills, grammatical construct, and my work ethic. Organizing an essay is a very natural process for me. I always follow the basic guidelines for the structure of an essay, which state that one must have an introduction, thesis statement, body, conclusion, and a works cited when needed. The “Are Helicopter Parents Entering the No Fly Zone?” essay, “Animal Cloning—How Unethical Is It?” essay, and the “The Clean Water Act—Is it Successfully Reducing Water Pollution?” essay all have a proper introduction, an informative thesis statement, a body, great conclusions, and works cited pages. Formatting the essays is an integral aspect of organizational skills. Each new paragraph is indented, the font is twelve-point Times New Roman, the sentences are double spaced, and the headers are correct.

This portfolio reflects my time in College English. Included in my portfolio is a sample of my journal entries and reflections about them. Also included is a reflection of the class as a whole. This course granted college credit to the students who passed. The work consisted of papers, essays, and discussion questions. The five required papers includes a memoir, profile, extended definition, analysis, and argument. Before each paper was assigned, the class would read a few sample essays to get an understanding of how each type of paper should be written. Following the sample essays, the class would answer discussion questions. Then, before the paper was assigned, a shorter essay would be assigned for students to practice before writing the
The four essays that I read were not boring at all because they talked about a lot of different thing and I feel like mine is boring. I am not putting my writing down but I feel like it needs a little bit more of flavor. When I edit my rough draft I am going to add more details and explain why they are important. I am also going to write more about the tone of the article because now I realize that humour plays a very big part of “The Death of the Funeral Business” I did write about it in my draft but it needs more of why it’s important because I don’t think that it’s very
I was never a person that liked to write essays. This semester I really enjoyed writing those essays and specially because I was learning new things while writing them. Some things I could do to improve my essay writing are not to wait till the last three or four days before I turn my essay in to start doing it. Another thing I will do is if I forget how to do something or about some rule in the common errors I made I will just go back to all the lessons I printed out to have as reference. I think those will help me allot. And one last thing I will do to improve my writing is to try my best not to confuse all those words I got confused. I will do my best to learn each word and its rule of where it goes so I won’t have the same mistakes I had this semester.
When using the expository writing style choose words that have clear descriptive and unemotional meaning, it should also, be objective, unbiased, and the writer should not reveal any opinions or judgement of the information. Expository writing generally use a third-person point of view, and it should include a thesis, paragraph organized in chronological order, and you must support your statements. The journal entry mostly resembles the personal writing style. I chose the essay Sister Flowers and it shared a lot of personal thoughts and experiences about
International students face many different challenges when studying abroad. This is due to many factors. First they are living in a country very far away from their own. The country they are studying in also has a very different way of life than theirs. Also the laws in foreign country are much different than the laws in their own country. Due to that they face a lot of problems trying to adapt to this new culture. Me personally as an international student in the US studying in ASU have faced three particularly difficult challenges that I was able to overcome through time. In this essay I will explain how international students can overcome tough challenges and situations.
Every trip consists of two simultaneous journeys. The outer journey and the inner journey, the outer journey is everything external: what you’re seeing, hearing, smelling, doing, etc. The inner journey is what’s happening in your mind. Great travel journals weave these two journeys together. Take a few minutes to scan each of your senses.
When tourists decide to travel, there must be a motivation behind and this applies to VFR travellers (Gitelson and Kerstetter, 1995; Murphy, et al, 2003; Ramachandran, 2006). However, it is crucial to understand if VFR travel is the main purpose of travel or it just an activity that falls under the main purpose of travel (Ramachandran, 2006). Before one attempts to understand if VFR travel is either primary or secondary, it is important to review travel motivations which lead people to decide that they want to travel. Travel motivation is the basis for tourism studies which lead to tourism development (Pearce, 2005). It is significant in tourism to understand what motivates tourists in making a decision that they would desire to visit a particular place or
This essay is the respond to the Local Council Member who has wrong idea about a common archetype of adventure tourist. This misconception based on ignorance of current tourism industry, could potentially be a dangerous for local economy and development. The local authority must be well informed about present conditions with the tourism market, before they will make a far reaching decisions about the development direction in this industry. Currently, there are many organisations whose monitoring an international tourism business and this knowledge supposed to be good use for our common good.
Nowadays in the rea of globalization, according to the World Tourism Organization, “seven hundred million people travelled abroad in 2003”, and the number is estimated to increase to 1.6 billion by 2020. (International Labour Organization, 2005). Tourism is spreading in unusual places. A lot of people want to be in the midst of adventure. It is a vital source of revenues for the GDP of many countries. I partially agree that tourism hugely benefits the local community. This essay will discuss some of the economic, social and environment effect of tourism on the host community.

To truly experience the wonders that the world has to offer can be expressed by the life of one single person, setting off into the world to gain a higher purpose about the world. There is no better way to find yourself because when you travel you open yourself up to millions of opportunities. Without travel you may be completely unaware of your true persona. Your limits are tested and you are completely out of your comfort zone when traveling. Getting out of the comfort zone helps you grow as a person and see your potential. Nothing can take away the memories that traveling and being a traveler has brought me. Get out there and see this beautiful world for yourself and become a traveler, you will not regret
