This portfolio reflects my time in College English. Included in my portfolio is a sample of my journal entries and reflections about them. Also included is a reflection of the class as a whole. This course granted college credit to the students who passed. The work consisted of papers, essays, and discussion questions. The five required papers includes a memoir, profile, extended definition, analysis, and argument. Before each paper was assigned, the class would read a few sample essays to get an understanding of how each type of paper should be written. Following the sample essays, the class would answer discussion questions. Then, before the paper was assigned, a shorter essay would be assigned for students to practice before writing the
real paper. Finally, for each paper, students would peer edit a rough draft before submitting the final draft. My portfolio reflects me as a senior because it contains each of my writings. Several of my papers reflect a different aspect of my time as a student. I wrote the memoir about my time on the cross country team and how it changed my life. In addition, I wrote my profile paper about the cross country coach and her influence in my life. Finally, for the argument paper, I submitted a paper I had written the previous year for another class. I feel like that reflects me as a senior the most because it can be seen as an act influenced by “senioritis.”
During the English 160 course, I improved my approach to writing and developing papers, build on critical reading and grammatical skills, and exceed my previous abilities to write a strong paper as I took into consideration different genre based audiences. I actually have taken other college-level classes before it, but Dual Enrollment English was the only course that gave me an accurate representation of how college will really be like and what it will expect of me. A professional writing portfolio is a very useful tool for a writer. It helps the writer prepare well for their entry into the professional world. A portfolio also allows the writer to be more organized with their work. A website, “Rhetoric and Writing”, talks about the importance of having a Professional Writing Portfolio. It discusses how many professionals/superiors will use a portfolio to assess a writer's aptitudes and skills. The site also discusses how portfolios are important for job searchers because they are more personal, and much more insightful, and therefore a better way for employers to evaluate interviewees than a regular resume. In this portfolio reflection essay I will be addressing the five essays I have written for my English 101 class. Along with addressing the five essays I have wrote I also will be stating my strengths and weaknesses of those essays. The five essays this portfolio will include is a diagnostic essay, revised narrative essay, profile essay, evaluation essay, and arguing a position essay. Those five essays I have written over the course of this semester have been very helpful towards my writing skills. Punctuating, staying on topic, my introductions, and conclusions are areas I struggle with when writing papers, but by writing those five papers during this semester has helped me improve on those areas.
Portfolio II: Knowledge Representation The coursework completed during Portfolio II enhanced my teaching and leadership skills, strengthened my curriculum development abilities, and reaffirmed my desire to integrate creative approaches to delivering instruction and disseminating research. The first writing piece i choose from my portfolio was visual analysis. The visual analysis personal was one of the hardest paper I had to write for this semester. It was so challenging because I could not follow the process which I was adjusted to writing to which is, collecting data about a subject and writing about the research I found . With the Visual analysis we were instructed to choose a piece of public visual rhetoric and analysis it using rhetorical terms such as pathos, logos, and ethos. I needed to express my freshly learned rhetoric terms towards a image, than transform what i was seeing into an 4-6 page essay. After revising my paper I was able to see my growth as a writer. It was actually amazing it see the two papers side by side.
During the 9 weeks of this course, I believe I improved my writing skills a lot. Even though I took this course just as a part of satisfying WST requirement, I got connected with the course work. Now I like this course more than any of my other courses because I was very interested in doing the exercises and started enjoying it. When I started enjoying doing the writing exercises, my writing started improving proportionally. As far back as completing our first reflections towards this module, I have been able to see the benefits of reflective academic pieces as well as keeping an e-portfolio in order look back on our first year at Writtle. This e-portfolio has enabled me to make detailed evaluations of my current strengths and weaknesses in each particular subjects, it has also allowed me to begin in developing a professional display whereby all my work is collated for future employers. Throughout the semester, I’ve written several essays and other writing assignments that demonstrate competent writing in all three student learning outcomes of English 1. According to my portfolio, I am excellent in the first learning outcome, which is content, argument, and insights of this portfolio. Furthermore, I show competence in the second learning outcome which is the development, evidence, and organization of my writing. I am also competent in the third learning outcome which is the grammar, mechanics, as well as the formatting of my writing. Overall, I am competent in all the student learning outcomes of this course because my portfolio is composed of two well thought out argumentative essays which incorporate adequate credible evidence to support my stance on a subject. I also show competence in grammar and mechanics because I made sure to proofread my paragraphs However, I struggled quite a bit with these, but I managed to correct my errors after proofreading. I am also competent at properly formatting my essays as I correctly cite and reference evidence in my works cited page.
My theme for this portfolio is construction and how it can be related to the writing process. At the beginning of this class I had no clue that my passion for engineering and building could be transferred into my writing, but I have learned through this class how to relate the formation of my essays to the construction of something more like a house. It starts with the foundation of the house, then each floor of the house, and finally the finishing touch, the roof. These levels of construction form direct parallels to the intro, body paragraphs, and conclusions of an essay. This idea not only has helped me create my own essays, but it also has a strong effect on how I look at others ' work. In my peer reviews, this mindset draws me to the structure of my peer 's paper and how well developed and organized each aspect of the paper is. Also, because this passion for building and how it has shaped me, I often look at how an author structures his work and what he uses to add to each of these different parts.
