Ever since I can remember I have wanted to be a doctor. This summer, through Yeshiva University, I had the unique opportunity of participating in the Summer Internship Program at Hackensack University Medical Center in Hackensack, New Jersey. Over the course of four weeks, along with three other students, we observed and communicated with esteemed physicians and staff from a full range of medical specialties. Endoscopies, imaging techniques, ER, surgery, pathology labs and ICU’s – were among the many areas of medicine we got to discover and learn about first-hand. The uniqueness of this program was that our schedule was not only intensive, but also flexible and accommodating to our interests. I am fascinated by surgery and therefore got to …show more content…
The patient would simply input his problem; the doctor would go through the data in his mind and then offer the solution. Sometimes the doctor would have to draw blood or prescribe an MRI, but ultimately he would offer a solution. J. Groopman, in How Doctors Think, refers to this process as clinical algorithm. Up until now I had viewed medicine as an exact science. True, science didn’t have all the answers and as a result, sometimes people would die, but as for medicine itself – in my eyes it was …show more content…
Physicians have to create an atmosphere that will engage their patients to an open and fluid dialogue. From dialogue doctors get clues, which lead to a more accurate diagnosis. It’s more than just making patients feel comfortable; it’s about being empathetic and showing you genuinely care about their problem. From what I’ve seen, every doctor has his own way of doing this. One doctor may use humor; another may use personal anecdotes. I admired the gastroenterologist who portrayed the perfect amount of professionalism and humor while communicating with his patients. His patients seemed to feel very comfortable and really opened up. I learned that when patients talk, doctors have to listen attentively to their use of language and tone of voice while at the same time pay attention to their body
You have to remember that patients are already in a fragile condition so, make it as easy as possible by using positive statements and questions. For example, use phrases like: "That will be more comfortable; that looks better; you 're doing a good job." It 's important that patients hold a positive image of the future. Ask about their family or vacation plans. Have them focus on something to look forward to and the good things in life. (5 skills, 2015) it’s also important to remember that you may have a clam patent but you have to remember the family member or friends that are around, again come down to their level for example a distressed child, don’t hang over them stoop down and talk to them face to face, and explain in a calm voice what happening and what you are going to do, this is the best way to communicate with a more likely effective
“A healthcare provider’s bedside manner encompasses their medical knowledge, personality, and ability to understand the patient and communicate their concern for them.” (Britt). Although some individuals don’t see the importance of communication and emotional connection with patients in the medical field, doctors who have problems properly interacting with their patients will have a lower chance of success in healing them. Doctors receive so much education but are never taught proper bedside manners, which is the way that physicians interact with patients. In order to ensure a patient’s comfort, psychological well-being, and physical health, a physician must truly understand their patient.
I aspire to exceed expectations in this field and work with doctors to access possible conditions. As a student who has always been passionate about science and excelled in these areas, I have had the opportunity to share my knowledge while assisting a physics instructor in the laboratory with experiments he plans to introduce in future classes and while tutoring struggling students in Chemistry, A&P, and Statistics. This has been a rewarding experience for me as I desire to see others succeed. This has also allowed me to stay sharp in these areas and has helped me learn to communicate more effectively; both of which will be beneficial to my program. This year, I’ve had the honor of instructing a science club at a private school where I led a group of students through hands-on learning projects and experimentations. Although I demonstrate a strong background in Science, I knew it would be important to gain some medical experience. I was fortunate to be able to volunteer at a local women’s health clinic with the head sonographer beginning August 2017 and continuing for 1 year until classes begin in the
Oddly enough, I liked giving obese, old patients bed baths, helping them to the bathroom, and cleaning their bed pans. But, don’t get me wrong. It wasn’t exactly what I loved doing, but I knew it was part of the job, and I willingly did the dirty work. By the end of my junior year, I knew I loved the hospital environment and wanted to eventually work there; however, I just didn’t know in what capacity. Fortunately, during a slow day in my last semester of shadowing, a nurse asked me if I would like to see a surgery being performed. I quickly accepted the offer, and I got to watch a surgeon perform an eye lift procedure. This experience, one of the most interesting I had ever witnessed, made me realize the area of the hospital that interested me most, the operating room. More specifically, I wanted to be an orthopedic surgeon. The path to become an orthopedic surgeon is not a quick nor easy one. To become an orthopedic surgeon, one must first be accepted into medical school, graduate medical school, and then complete post medical school requirements such as residency and
Presently, my extracurricular and academic interests are combined in my two year Health Science class. The class provides real-life medical situations that I may come in contact with in the future. Like any health science class, we study the body, in both its’ functional and dysfunctional state. This survey class also includes an introduction to equipment, medical protocol, and ethical issues. A sense of teamwork guides our procedures. Next semester, I will study at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Ramstein High School’s Career Practicum program. After initial on-the-job application of classroom learning, we will work with patients, supervised by the hospital staff. Living so close to a hospital that services thousands of seriously injured patients every year provides opportunities that other students lack, even in their college programs.
In conclusion, doctors have a moral obligation to tell patients the truth about their illnesses, unless the patient clearly states that he or she does not want to know. Medicine is a field that works to treat the patient. This means that physicians are there for guidance, using expertise and years of education to guide them to a cure. This does not mean that a physician should make decisions about the patients without proper consent. Believing that patients will misunderstand the diagnosis, or assuming that they won’t want to know are not valid reasons for keeping information from the person. Communication is important in a medical setting, and is especially important when talking about the health of an individual. With relevant, appropriate and humanistic communication, telling a patient their diagnosis can and should be done in a caring way.
“When used sensitively, respecting the gravity of the situation, humor can build the connection among the caregiver, patient, and family” (Penson et al. 2005). Also, one must take into consideration cultural sensitivities, and avoid pointed remarks aimed directly at a patient or family member. Inappropriate humor can make an already stressful situation exponentially worse and increasingly more uncomfortable. Humor between patient and caregiver helps to create a bond, instills trust, and injects a bit of fun into the environment. Allowing a patient to view us as human, and not an emotionless robot gives us even better opportunity to help them reach their goals of improving their health. A patient that trusts a nurse will more readily relinquish information regarding how they are feeling. It may cause them to think about the sensations they’re feeling so that they are able to provide more thorough information, thus making our just a little easier when in discussions with physicians and other nurses. It also allows us an opportunity to make more thorough and appropriate nursing diagnoses that will better help the patient achieve their health care
...epersonalized. Although not every patient is easy to deal with and doctors are under colossal pressure, by inspiring students with a possible future in the medical field to get involved with type of community service early we can ameliorate the distressing situation. Coming into contact with, speaking to, and intimately understanding these incredible individuals can dramatically alter one’s perspective and ensure treatment with self respect and dignity. I strongly believe in this notion of early involvement. My changed view coupled with my future medical training in college will allow me to be a figure to emulate and hopefully inspire others to follow this path. By embarking on this monumental journey mankind has the opportunity to shape history and enrich the lives of others while personally experiencing the most rewarding of all endeavors: helping someone in need.

I started to explore the different fields of medicine by working as a Medical Scribe in the Emergency Department, ER tech in Trauma Centers, getting involved in research, volunteering at hospitals and taking high level science classes. This will enhance my knowledge and experience i...
What are the benefits and advantages of internships? Internships help you gain exposure to real issues not found in textbooks, it also helps to increase your skills that are readily marketable from doing an internship. Interning can provide you with personal growth experiences and exposure to different job opportunities. Internships give you the opportunity to evaluate potential employers nearly risk free, which is a plus. I did an internship for a year at my church. The first thing I had to do was find the facility I was going to do the internship with. The next thing was to engage a suitable mentor for the work I was going to do as an intern. After talking to two perspective mentors one was chosen. Your mentor has to be dedicated to your success, and your spiritual growth. He or she must not be afraid of telling you the truth, and make sure you can follow instructions. An internship helps you to clarify your goals, gain experience by applying your knowledge and skills in work related situations.
In 2012, eighty-four percent of Santa Clara University graduates who responded to a survey from the Santa Clara University School of Engineering obtained one or more internships during their undergraduate studies. Of those who responded, eighty-two percent were employed full-time after graduation earning a median salary of $62,500 (Santa Clara University). This research exhibits that internships can be an important strategy in the efforts toward job search for both students, as well as for employers looking to hire valuable employees. As defined by InternNE.com, an internship is any carefully monitored service or work experience that may be evaluated for educational credit in which an intern or student establishes learning goals and reflects on his or her learning experience in relation to achievement of the stated goals. Internships should first be examined that, when implemented at fullest potential, these opportunities can provide companies and students with a competitive edge in today’s business world. Subsequently, it can be shown that internships assist organizations and companies with temporary or seasonal project and task completion. Lastly, internships will be clarified as to how they allow students to gain valuable experience before entering the workforce. From reviewing an ample amount of research, internships are beneficial and advantageous to the success of a young student, as well as companies.
It is important that the patient does most of the talking throughout the interview, so that the doctor can elicit all of the information about the patient’s illness.... ... middle of paper ... ... A. (1981) The 'Standard' of Physician – Patient Communication.
I went to the operating room on March 23, 2016 for the Wilkes Community College Nursing Class of 2017 for observation. Another student and I were assigned to this unit from 7:30am-2:00pm. When we got their we changed into the operating room scrubs, placed a bonnet on our heads and placed booties over our shoes. I got to observe three different surgeries, two laparoscopic shoulder surgeries and one ankle surgery. While cleaning the surgical room for the next surgery, I got to communicate with the nurses and surgical team they explained the flow and equipment that was used in the operating room.
This paper focuses on the personal experiences gained from the internship while supporting the functions of Human Resources (HR) at the University of Texas at El Paso. The HR department provides a variety of services to all Staff, Faculty and Student employees. Throughout the internship, knowledge and skills have been obtained in the specific area of employment and recruitment. Personal experiences such as; conducting criminal background checks, and E-verify reports which verifies an employee’s eligibility to work in the United States were the typical daily functions of the internship. Interning in the HR department has presented exceptional opportunities that will help fine tune practical skills and gain professional experience while pursuing an undergraduate degree
