Soft Skills and My Career Soft skills are something that everyone has whether they are strong or weak, it is up to us to make sure they are as strong as we want them. For the career field, it is important for us to have certain skills to be able to do our job effectively. Since every career has a different set of skills it requires, we need to research which skills the career requires. We will then be able to strength those skills for our chosen career so we can do our best in our work. The Morning Call Media Group for example, is wanting people that has excellent customer service and organization skills, good written and verbal communication skills, be able to work under deadline pressure, handle multiple priorities and adapt to new technology and on-going procedural changes resulting from use of technology (The Morning Call Media Group, 2016). On a website called bls.gov, it says that important qualities for graphic designers to have are: Analytical skills, artistic ability, communication skills, computer skills, creativity, and time-management skills (Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor, 2015). Upon finding this information out, I found out that there are skills that I have yet to acquire in order for me to be prosperous. A website called roberthalf.com, mentions three most important soft skills that you need in the career field. These skills are: Strong communication skills, problem-solving prowess, and the third is dependability (Whitman, 2014). I strongly believe that these skills are something that you definitely need in the workplace, no matter what field you are in. In owning these skills, I know I will be able to show the corporation, clientele, and colleagues that I know what I am achieving in my work and that I am striving to shine in the company. Also, the people that own these skills and use them most likely will be the ones that get promoted because they do better in the field than their fellow co-workers that do not have these skills. One of the goals for my career is this exact goal. For example : reading comprehension, active listening, and critical thinking. Reading comprehension is being able to understand the work related documents handed to you. Active listening is listening and giving attention to the person whether it's a patient or a coworker. This also means asking questions. Appropriate question that are related to the topic and asking them at appropriate times. Last is critical thinking, what that is, is when yourself as the NP is using logic to solve and figure out the problem. you're figuring out the weaknesses and strengths to solve the problems. These three are the main skills and/or talents require.
Some crucial skills needed for this career is helping, reasoning, social perceptiveness, decision making, writing and authoring. These skills do relate to my weaknesses and strengths. For example, one of my academic strengths is decision making and this can come in handy to a family case worker because they need logic to identify solutions to their client’s problems and case. Base on my skills and value assessments results the skill “helping” is one of my strengths and it’s true because I’m a caring person that will try their best to help someone out.
Each of these skills are going to help me achieve these goals. Being able to communicate will help me become better at being able to keep customers happy by doing what they want instead of what i think. Also when i need to get stuff done I focus and work hard on it so i finish it the right way with good quality and confidence. This helps with getting

Obviously, these skills called transferable skills are both relevant to employment and study. 'These skills are interpersonal as well as intellectual, and include the skill to learn from experience as well as reading, the ability to manage yourself, basic skills in numeracy, literacy and IT, interpersonal group-working and communication skills in analyzing and solving problems' (Cameron, 2008:19). So whether students could gain transferable skills in the university has become a major factor of developing a career after their graduation.
As I have noted, I truly believe that the numerous job skills that are needed to be successful include dedication, communication, and adaptation. First of all, you must be devoted to your career if you want exemplary results. Equally important, being able to articulate your ideas, and intellectually communicate said ideas will ensure a successful time at you occupation. Last but not least, in order to be successful in your employment, you must be flexible to the obstacles that are inevitable. I urge you to strive to obtain these essential job skills because they are worthwhile.
A bachelor’s degree in graphic design or a related field is where a student would start. Though, if a student goes into another field, it would be beneficial for him or her to pursue technology training to meet hiring qualifications. The National Association of schools of Art and Design have 320 accredited post secondary colleges, universities, and independent institutes with programs in art in design. Most of these schools include studio art, principles of design, computerized design, commercial graphics production, printing techniques and website design. A student should also consider taking classes in writing, marketing, and business to get an edge in this occupation. Many designers can also gain their experience first-hand by doing an internship. Portfolios are a necessity as a designer, because it shows the client the talent and experience that the designer has. A designer should keep up with the latest software to stay in the competition and not lose the competitive edge with other designers. There are prominent qualities that an employer should look for when considering hiring a designer; these qualities include analytical, artistic, communication, computer, creativity, and time management
While working or while looking for work there are certain skills sets that are universally important. No matter what job or career path you have chosen these skills make it easier to obtain your goals, whatever they may be.
STEM vs Soft Skills Valerie Strauss and Cathy N. Davidson share their negative sentiments towards STEM majors in “The surprising thing Google learned about its employees – and what it means for today’s students”. Davidson sites studies from Google arguing that majoring in a STEM field is not necessary, or even ideal, in order to be successful in the work world. She includes literary techniques including either/or reasoning and emotionally loaded terms in order to persuade the reader that STEM skills are not vital to success.
