One main reason why I chose Sociology as my major is because it’s very broad and there are many available careers that have peek an interest to me. A career that I have thought of pursuing is a Family Caseworker. The duty of a family caseworker is to provide social services and assistance to a family, child, or school to improve their social and psychological functioning’s. Family case workers job is also to advise families and a person so they can have some advice on how to cope with their issues. The requirements for this career is a bachelor’s degree on social work however studies either in sociology or psychology are relevant to this field. There are higher positions in this career which is supervisory but a master’s degree is usually required. …show more content…
Some crucial skills needed for this career is helping, reasoning, social perceptiveness, decision making, writing and authoring. These skills do relate to my weaknesses and strengths. For example, one of my academic strengths is decision making and this can come in handy to a family case worker because they need logic to identify solutions to their client’s problems and case. Base on my skills and value assessments results the skill “helping” is one of my strengths and it’s true because I’m a caring person that will try their best to help someone out. However, one of my weakness is writing and authoring and the reason is that I have poor writing skills and I have trouble sometimes writing and structuring essays. One way that can help me understand more about this career is joining clubs in campus. I believe and have heard that there are organizations where people volunteer to help kids in low income families by tutoring them. Another way is internships such as caseworker assistants which people have the opportunity to work with experience case

I knew I loved to help others but it was not until I was an emerging adult that I knew what my calling was. My devotion to improve the quality of life for those who are disadvantaged is one of the reasons I have chosen to pursue a Master’s in Social Work. After obtaining my masters, I plan on diversifying my masters by getting licensed and becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I would like to study social work because I feel it will lead me directly to one of the most emotionally fulfilling careers available, as well as giving me the chance to combine helping people 's mental well being with their physical
I decided to go after a general Masters of Social Work degree so I can work in a large variety of settings and be as marketable as possible. I would like to go into some sort of counseling involved with social work but I would like to see where life takes me. If I became employed in another aspect of social work that would be amazing. I also hope to be a social worker in New Jersey but if another state or country needed my services and skills, I would go there instead. The future is wide open for me but I know I want to be a social worker and I am dedicated to this profession.
I first became interested in social work when I took a human rights course as a part of my political science major requirements. Throughout the course, I was fascinated and disturbed by the historic oppression of many large groups in society, and I realized my interests lie outside of the political arena; thus, I double-majored in social policy & practice because of my desire to learn more about how to enhance human well-being, fight social injustice, and pursue social change. I soon realized I wanted to pursue graduate social work education in order to gain a more holistic understanding of social problems and human ailments and, in turn, better understand the best ways to fix them. My background in political science and social policy gives me a unique perspective on the field of social work, as I have gained immense knowledge on social issues, the law, and public policy that will be useful in my graduate school and professional endeavors to fight for social

In my interview I chose my girlfriend's neighbor. Hector is of Mexican decent and he is here because in Meigs county the produce fields hire Mexican laborers on worker permits. Hector started out doing this then he became the boss about five years ago and received his green card and now is an American and can speak very good English. He explained to me that in Mexico there is no age when you can start working so there are young boys working at six to ten years old to help support his needy family. He also stated that women do not usually work they are only aloud to go to the village markets and get goods for their family's and raise there many children. I asked about minimum wage and he kinda laughed and said some teens and men who work are lucky to get a dollar an hour, but he said the people who are lucky enough to get to do what he got to do make there family's a lot of money. He said when he started coming to America to work he was picked like a lottery pick because there are only so many jobs for little positions he and his entire family was dirt poor, but now he said his family is the richest in the village. He said that he has also got to move all of his immediate family to America.
I grew up in a household that fluctuated between middle and lower class, thanks to job cuts and health problems. Since my parents are not advantaged enough economically to help me pay for college, I have relied on scholarships, grants, and loans to help pay for my education on my own. Since my main area of interest is in mental health, and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln does not offer a social work degree, I decided to major in psychology. Psychology will help me with the mental aspects of a social work education, but neglects to teach me about disadvantaged individuals, social work ethics, and interactions in the field of social work, to name a few. My lack of experience in social work settings is another limitation. I have done a lot of volunteer work with animals, and some with mental health awareness, but none of it has been categorized as social work volunteerism. My plans for overcoming the financial barrier are to receive grants, stipends, and loans. I cannot afford to pay out of pocket, and until I establish myself in the career field, I will need to work hard and prove I deserve granted or loaned funds. My plans for overcoming the barriers of my psychological education and lack of social work setting experience are to immerse myself into social work from the very beginning of my MSW program. I thrive on learning, so I will add social work education on top of my psychology foundation without causing conflict. I will also perform my best and enhance my education through field work, which I am excited to
What does a sociological perspective contribute to the study of the relationship between education and society?
"Do not become a social worker. You will not make any money and you will be stressed out all the time." My maternal grandparents were foster care parents from the 1980 's until April of this year. In that time they hosted over 250 children from a variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds. As a child, I spent much of my time at my grandparents house and was exposed to the multiple aspects of the foster care system. I became close with the social workers who came to my grandmother 's house and when it came time for me to make a career choice, they all discouraged me from becoming a social worker. Despite their warnings I graduated with my Bachelor 's of Social Work from Saint Louis University in 2013 and began to work on my Master 's in Social Work in August of 2014.
Also, a college degree as a Sociologist or a Social Worker will require me to become engaged in the lives of people, many who are socially, mentally and economically disadvantaged.
Sociology and psychology is the study of the mind and the environment around us which makes us who we are. These theories assist us to understand behaviour from individual and societal levels.
Currently, I work at the Foster Knox Day Care here at UCM. Being a Social Work major has enhanced my love of helping children. After taking Human Behavior, I can cue in what is going on in the developmental stage of the child life. Now I understand that a two-year may not say No to be defiant. Being able to interact with children has made me more aware that I want to work with children as a social worker.
However, after talking with my advisor I was told that I would be able to go into psychology with a bachelor’s degree in social work. My advisor also told me that the professions are similar. I took her advice and started a new goal, to get my BSW. Coming into my first class on the field of social work, I wasn’t too sure what to expect. All I knew is that the profession was connected to helping people. After learning more about the profession and the wide range of options that accompany it, I started to get excited. I could work with many different types of people on a range of issues and changing which area I work in would be relatively easy. I have always wanted to help people with mental health issues and I thought that social workers only did that in school settings. Learning that I just needed to get my Masters to be able to do therapy made me feel great about choosing to become a social worker. Having options has made my college experience better by getting me excited for what the future holds.
