What is set designer to me? A set designer is the most important person in the theater production because their innovative imaginations help the directors how he should peruse the story. Set designer manager is like a central man because he has to communicate with everyone who is working in their play at some point. Such as costume designer, lighting designer, and stage manager. Most people that work in theatre have a pretty good idea of what a stage manager does during rehearsals - at least, the things that can be seen. We take blocking notes, cue lines, keep track of the time, coordinate presets and scene changes, answer the questions, and solve the problems. Yet, there are so many things a stage manager does, so many balls constantly being juggled, that many elements of the stage manager’s job go unnoticed. I would have a very apparent clock in the opening scene to emphasize the time slowly ticking by. I think that the emphasis should be on the plant and on the characters, not on an elaborate store or set pieces on the stage. The main set piece should be the elaboration of the plant as it grows and thrives. Nothing should take away from this. I think that the absence of unnecessary props will allow the audience members to interpret the underdevelopment of Skid Row and also concentrate on the development of the plot and the character changes, especially in the case of Seymour and Audrey as they begin their relationship, which will cause the ending scene to be all the more dramatic when they both die at the hands of Audrey II.
To represent and to appeal to today's society while a large amount of the themes and values stayed the same, some of these ideas I had to alter. I did this through the language and form of the play and also by using film techniques, if I hadn't of done this the appropriation would have seemed unrealistic and the audience would be unable to relate to the film.
Although the costumes are very simple, the difference and the effect of the costumes before and after the theatre is sold to a chain company is astounding. During the time in which the theatre is owned by the original owner, the style of costume is somewhat complex. The stark contrast between the color of Sam and Avery’s uniforms and the color of the set makes them stand out visually from the rest of the set. Also, before the theatre is sold, Rose does not seem to wear her uniform but instead wears clothing that many people would associate with a lazy day at home. This costume choice for Rose empowers who she is as a character. After the theatre is sold, each of the three employees is wearing a plain red uniform with black pants, black shoes, and a nametag hung around their neck. This uniformity is a commentary on the sale of the theatre to a big brand company. When the theatre was sold, it was sold into a chain system, in this system the employee loses all individuality and becomes nothing more than a clone. Moving onto the significant differences between the two. Imagery, body language, mood, and tone are all important literature elements that could be portrayed better in the film. This is due to the fact that the (written) play depends more on imagination. On the other hand, the film relies more on the audience’s senses. Tom's and Amanda relationship occurred to be stronger in the movie than it was explained in the play. The atmosphere in the movie is rather ill and boring than it is in the play. When it comes to lighting, it was more dim in the play to reflect a memory. In the film, it wasn't as dimmed because the memory could be reflected in different ways. Moreover, images, that were flashed in a screen device, did not exist in the film. In the movie, the atmosphere was more boring and ill than it was in the play.

“Devised theatre can start from anything. It is determined and defined by a group of people who set up an initial framework or structure to explore and experiment with ideas, images, concepts, themes, or specific stimuli that might include music, text, objects, paintings, or movement.” (Alison Oddey 1). Devised theatre, also called collaborative creation, is a form of theatre in which the script is created through a collaborative process with the actors and the playwright, rather than the traditional method of theatre with a premade script. Devised theatre is created through the process, collaboration, and multi-vision of the group. Similar to improvisational theatre, a devised theatre play is created in the rehearsal process from the performers interacting with each other. By the time the devised play is performed the work is a cohesive piece that is, for the most part, set in stone. This form of theatre is a modern form of theatre, that came about from the collaboration of many different type of artists, because of the need of the performers to have some input into what they are performing. The devised theatre form is most utilized in the USA, Great Britain, and Australia, but especially in our country. Devised theatre utilizes physical movements, rather than focusing on only the language.

The scenery shows realistic sets in the play. The text is very episodic that show the parts of the events in a story. The conflict shows a rough experience of growing up with adults, who are treating the orphaned boys very abusive and having some troubles on where they belonged. Peter, other boys, and Molly have some kinds of conflicts about being a leader and succeeding the mission where the Lord Astar (Molly’s father) have to send to Molly. The conflict has already resolved when they have completed their mission and kept their group safe. It also affects my overall experience that the conflict between different characters did show different perspectives on how they lead and express their experience of leadership in their mission. The space of the theater was small, but it’s large enough for the actors to perform and for the audience to see. The scenery designer Andrew Breithaupt of this play did show a specific place and time. For example, the beginning shows the ship and what era is it. The scenery is also very real locale in the play, and it’s very appropriate views toward the audience for non-professional and school play. The scenery of this play did show more realistic-moving type, but it did move some parts of the scene that I see in the play. Also, it showed the surprising element of changing the sets than the scene. Costume Designer Amy Zsadanyi-Yale did give the clues about the timeline, personalities of every character in the play. But I believe that the costumes should get focused on connecting the situations in the play. For example, an orphanage that the nameless boy (Peter) and other boys lived should have ragged-looking or something damage into the costumes so it can create an effect on costumes from the scene. The costumes show the conflicts and interpersonal relationships, but I should consider that the social groups in this play should look something different from the orphanage and upper class. There are many types of producers; executive producers, co-producers, assistant producers and line producers. They all do very different things. Some are the producers are responsible for raising the funds for the movie while others are responsible for the production that goes on during the filming of the movie and still other producers are in charge of what physically goes on the set. Then it is time for the director. The director is in charge of the actors. The director works with the actors to visually bring to life what was written on the screenplay (Fortunato, Who Does What on a Film). Now the idea needs to come together. The idea of writing, “what you know” is not always true and writing, “what you come to know” is in fact a more accurate way to write. Other good ways to formulate ideas are to use existing plays, novels, short stories, life stories, new articles, or even past TV shows and film. The production attempt of displaying things in familiar way that is accurate to life. Costumes give a visual appealing sense of how people were likely to wear. Each character’s costume needs to match their class standing in the society that the people could have worn. Actions that done by the characters as a response because of something that has happened or due to the fact that they have a motive, is important to the play but have to be done in an understandable or reasonable way. Dialogue has to close to what someone say as if they are having a real life conversation. In the production that was so important to showcasing any play is portraying it something with as much accuracy to where it becomes hard to distinguish what could happen versus what is not really likely to happen. I think as a director the acting skills I would use most likely with my actors is to know if they are capable approaching indirect action on stage, I think that’s something that the production will consist of repeatedly. The theme throughout the play is constant illusion of self awareness and others around you. I need an actor who can go on stage and become the place and time. The set would consist of few elements, major obstacles of what I want to get across to the audience, by doing that it won’t take away from the feel of the play and what’s it trying to convey. This is a story of an idealistic son of a corrupt merchant exposes his father’s duplicity, but in the process he destroys the very people he wishes to save.
