Literacy Journal and Events Literacy events occur quite often throughout my day. My mornings are usually repetitive with me waking up to an alarm sound and hearing the microwave ding due to my suitemate cooking breakfast. On my way out the door I always take a look at the kitchen trashcan because I hate a dirty kitchen. When closing the door, I insert my key in the door to lock it because I am not use to a door not automatically locking. Since I am a full time student, throughout the day I am involved in literacy events that involve anything that is school related. While walking to and from class, I sometimes look at the traffic lights. I believe these characteristics are what makes me literate. My literacy events show my heavy reliance on God and my faith through my constant listening to gospel throughout the day. I can be considered tech savvy or technological dependent due to my obsessive use of technology for communication. My literacy events all involve some type of interpretation or understanding; I am constantly breaking down lyrics of a gospel song or breaking down information in lengthy messages and emails. This shows my willingness to get to the bottom of situations and offer solutions. I have eleven literacy events, but I repeat them multiple times a day. Although my day seems repetitive, I am constantly being exposed to new information and environments. Literacy applies to my life because I define it as the ability to read, write, and interpret messages or symbols. I consider myself literate because I am able to read, write, and interpret messages and symbols well. Due to my paternal grandmother being education driven, I was forced to develop literacy traits early in life. My father’s side of the family is education focused, and higher education was expected of me early on. My ability to be literate, developed early in elementary school with hands on teachers, my retired grandmother, and my stay at home mom.
