Importance of Diversity in teams
An Organization is a body of people who willingly work together and form teams with an aim of
achieving a pre set goal or with a mission, realted to the external environment and
factors of competition. Teams form an integral part of any organization or company
because it gives the required strength and helps to build a positive environment
necessary for achieving the end goals. The teams within any and every organization
share the goals, purposes and missions. All the companies or organizations have a vision
which is formulated, keeping the team size and market in view.

Diversity adds to the
uniqueness of business environment and makes it more tasteful rather than a usual
work place setting where in you are almost aware of everything the other team mate
knows. Diversity is a broad term and it is not restricted to just the nationality or caste
but it goes far beyond these. A number of ways in which diversity can be explained
include age, gender, ethnic origin, education etc.
In any team there are members who are different from one another based upon the skill set, the nature
of expertise and nature of responsibility within the group or differences in their roles,
different ways of going about the same work assigned or ways of understanding and
learning. The diversity can also be related to the level of skill set acquired by individuals
within a team. When any team manager hires candidates for his\her team, they always

the overall working environment. Ideas can be executed in a better manner if we have people
from diverse backgrounds who bring in their knowledge and unique way of handling issues to
the workplace. This increases productivity because many minds together give a better output
than one. Collaboration is the way towards organizational success.
2) Better pool of skills in every sphere- IF we try and nurture diverse skills based upon the kind,
level of expertise and exposure, it would help us in fostering a better equipped team internally.
Hiring experts is of prime importance but beginners with zeal to learn can also add a lot of value

Cultural diversity is an essential piece of the team-building puzzle. As stated earlier, a heterogeneous team usually equals a successful team. A culturally diverse team brings the obvious cultural differences in language, dress and traditions to the table. In addition, less tangible characteristic such as moral values are equally, if not more important. These different methodologies and teachings help influence the team's direction. Persons of Western culture will have a different set of beliefs and methodologies from those of Middle Eastern or Eastern ethnicity. When team members take the time to learn and understand each culture's moral value, the result is a strong team foundation. High performance teams take and incorporate these cultural differences and use these different beliefs and values to attain the team goal.
Workforce diversity has become a reality in organizations. More organizations have written workforce diversity policies or programs. Although there is still no consensus on how to define workforce diversity, diversity policies and program are producing positive effects in organizations. Diversity in the workplace is a way of defining acceptable behaviors of employees. Diversity represents all the ways in which individuals are both similar and different. It involves a variation of characteristics such as: age, sex, color, religion, national origin, disability, or any other differences. Although diversity initiatives are common in the workplace today, this is due mainly to the federal government use of constitutional amendments, legislation, and executive orders, along with court decisions to interpret the laws for equal rights (Noe, Hollenbeck, Gerhart, & Wright, 2010). The way an organization defines diversity and how it manages its diverse workforce may determine its effectiveness.
Diversity is a notion, when applied to the majority of circumstances, that can create a positive conclusion. The trick to producing a positive outcome is often how the different aspects are brought together. Consider a classic dinner combination of peas and carrots, the two colors look appealing and the two flavors come together as one, making a superb side dish. Now consider oil and water, these two substances are not often considered a good combination. Although, this is not always the case; olive oil and vinegar (which is water based) when mixed, come together into a delectable salad dressing.
Companies such as Buzztronics are leading the way in the global economy because of their dedication to diversity in the workplace. In order to build a diverse and successful workforce, a business needs to recruit, train, and retain capable and talented minorities.
Depending on the interaction between the team members, a great atmosphere can be created. Each team is responsible for creating an pleasant atmosphere for everyone involved in the project. This type of atmosphere will allow the members to feel comfortable when it comes to taking risks in expressing themselves, advocating positions, and action taking.
There are two categories of Dimension of Diversity as shown in Figure 1 below. The first category is in the inner circle which is called primary dimension. It is inborn difference which will impact a person throughout his or her life. The outer circle is the second category called secondary dimension. It is acquired or changed throughout one’s lifetime and had lesser impact but still impact one’s self-definition(Meeting The Challenge of Diversity, 2005).

I have learned in this class that diversity is a number of traits that every person has that makes them an individual these traits can be ethnicity, race, gender, sexual orientation, age etc. It is important to stay open with diversity realizing it gives one individuality and is a good thing and people need to become aware of this and keep an open mind.
