In my opinion I feel that to be successful, you truly need to line up people around you who are willing to coach and mentor you. It is also a good look for you to be seen as a coach and mentor in the society we live in today. I see this as an excellent way to always have feedback and direction to help reach objectives and succeed to levels of excellence. I believe that the youth coming out of high School and college have no clue of what to expect in the real world, so by giving them life lessons and mentoring tips, they will be more prepared on to what to expect when life actually hits.

Real mentoring teaches coping skills to help manage the ups and downs of life. A smart person uses other people’s intake as their foresight. They have to be willing to invest time and energy in another person. Mentors need to be able to listen to and empathize with younger mentees. Beyond listening well, a good mentor also needs to be able to build trust with his mentee. Mentors and mentees need to be honest with each other and feel comfortable sharing insecurities and dreams. I wanted to start telling the story of our experience by sharing the feelings I brought into this exercise. A few years ago I underwent an experience of coaching through several sessions that left me this taste in the mouth that the coaching as a tool to develop others is not very effective. I have not taken the time to deeply analyze what went wrong but in general if I had to choose to do it again I think I would choose another methodology to foster change. Its objective in general is to assist in building behavioral skills, but in my opinion to really look for a long lasting change you need to give a deeper understanding to the lack of a certain skills, strongly reflect on the variables linked to it as could be the emotions, values and motivations that conduce you towards a behavior different that that one desired. Personally, I enjoy seeking information that allows me to jump beyond the facts, and staying on the behavioral side of the reality limits my passion for inspiration and insight.

Coaching and mentoring is a constant process that occurs all throughout a future teacher’s journey. While attending a university, it is common while in the teacher preparation program to undergo several coaching sessions and mentoring periods, which is great! Normally this continues through the first year of teaching, but something happens after that first year. If a relationship isn’t built, encouraged, and made intentional, the coaching stops. For teachers, this is strange. We are taught to constantly coach, encourage, mentor, and teach our students, but when it comes to our peers, those under us, etc., we assume that each teacher has suddenly “made it” as if someone who can make it through their first year is automatically “good to go” and will not encounter any hiccups along the way to becoming a veteran. In some instances, the teaching community is a selfish profession for the fact that you do what needs to be done for you and the students you serve, but not for your peers. You do not share your lessons, ideas, concerns, etc. Some teachers are still under the impression that if they are struggling, they are doing it wrong or they are not a “good” teacher. All you need is someone dedicated and inspiring to help you put them into practice. Of course, the most important things in coaching and mentoring are not the techniques themselves but your attitude. Having a healthy attitude is what it's all about. No matter how much theory you have, if you're pessimistic, grouchy, and uninspiring, you will get mediocre results at best. If you can really bring a lot of energy to the program, on the other hand, you will be able to easily make a difference.
In the end, coaches want you to be better and smarter than you were when you first joined the sport. They are there to motivate, inspire, and most importantly support you. My mindset about this topic was pretty clear. I felt that coaches have that position because they genuinely want to spread their wisdom for others to learn from. I thought that every single person that ever became a coach would actually care about their athletes no matter the circumstances.
Many young people just need to be motivated and given a fair chance at success. Young people need mentors to help them find their way and to help them stay focused. Mentors play an intricate roll in your lives and are sort of liaisons between your parents or guardians and your educators.
My ethical and moral views, beliefs, attitudes and values have been fashioned by an up bringing that centred on Christian beliefs. Even though religion was not forced upon me as a child, my mother raised us all with a strong sense of right and wrong. Along with the influence of my family, the Navy has had a big influence on the person I am. The Navy has a strong ethos of what is expected of the personnel that serve; this is made up of the following: Leadership, High Professional Standards, and Courage in Adversity, Determination, Loyalty, Mutual Respect, Discipline, A Sense of Humour, Teamwork, and A Can Do Attitude. Most recently of all though, the biggest thing that has influenced me as a person and a parent has been my experiences of working with young people. This includes acting as a Youth Advisor for Portsmouth City Council, a Mentor for Barnardos and a Youth Advisor for East Sussex County Council. I am currently working in two secondary schools as part of my resettlement from the Navy. This has given me the experience of working with young people living in virtual poverty, in constant trouble with the Police and education services and some young people with varying levels of disabilities. This work has given me a good ability to stay impartial, to be non judgemental and has given me a capacity to treat people a lot more emphatically than I was ever able to. This is because I have been exposed to a greater range of problems and personalities than I have been used to in the Navy. These are qualities that I will hopefully be able to transfer into my coaching practice.
