Career Development Plan Part 1 The goal of a nurse educator is to teach future nurses comprehensive knowledge and skills for clinical practice (Callen, Smith, Joyce, Lutz, Brown-Schott & Block, 2013, p. 583). I have been a proponent of learning since my family instilled the value of an education at an early age. I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Therapy in the 1990s. With limited career opportunities, I worked in pharmaceutical sales, tutorial and customer service before pursuing nursing as a second degree. I was given the opportunity to enter into nursing education in 2006. I found it both challenging and rewarding. I plan to continue to work as a nursing instructor for the next several years. Most of the lectures and presentations are uploaded into an online course shell that requires the faculty to have intermediate computer skills on Moodle, Citrix, UltiPro and different software provided by textbook publishers. It is also necessary to teach the students to access these software and course shells so the instructors need to be proficient enough to show the students how to. As technology advances, it is the responsibility of the instructors to keep up with the changes. One should strive to gain as many skills as they need during the course of their careers.
Safety
Safety is vital in the clinical and academic field. Continuous training through fire drills, in-service training on Campus Violence and Emergency protocols are done every year. It is also important to be aware of the policies and procedures of the campus to ensure that you are following the correct way to do things. The most important thing to do is to anticipate ways that could pose a safety risk to students or patients. The simple act of diffusing some tension and petty quarrels can prevent more serious problems later on.
Professional
The College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) is the governing body of all registered nurses in Ontario and is regulated. The CNO provides expectations and guidelines to follow, which need to be met by each Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) individually. As a nursing student, I am taught about the CNO and the importance of referring back to the guidelines while caring for patients. While gaining experiencing in the nursing field through my clinical settings, I have realized as a nursing student there are areas I need further development in. What led me to nursing in the beginning was having a passion for people. I love the holistic approach and level of care that nurses bring to the literal bedside table. I knew throughout nursing school that I wanted to advance my education further than bedside nursing. I debated on whether to pursue a master’s degree in nursing and just become a nurse practitioner, but ultimately, I knew I wanted to advance my education even further to help make and promote changes in healthcare. Our course, Transition to Professional Nursing, is barely two weeks old and already I am being enlightened and challenged to expand my experience of nursing. I have had the opportunity to care for wonderful individuals, each of whom have contributed the fabric of my personal nursing career. Nursing is a profession of both joy and sadness combined. My career has provided me the opportunity to care for those I need. In retrospect I can say that my personal nursing tapestry is comprised of patients who were grateful to a care team, after being revived from suffering a sudden cardiac event, the smile of a trusting child, a hand to be held while working with hospice patients and their families. My current role is a case manager. I seldom have direct contact with patients who have chronic illnesses, yet I am gifted with their trust. I have been given an opportunity to support, care, respect, educate, collaborate and research practice improvement initiatives. I continue to formulate my own nursing philosophy daily. While I experience daily encounters that allow my tapestry to become more colorful and detailed, I allow myself to set new goals. My final nursing goal, is to become a nurse practitioner. I can see myself in the next year working in an academic capacity in becoming a leader in rural health improvement and proficient at educating patients with diabetes and other chronic conditions, speaking at national events, advocating for patients and playing an active role in health policy. Nurses have always been an undervalued asset to the health care industry; however, there is always a great need for them. With more uninsured Americans requiring safe, affordable medical care, the pressing issue of nursing education is not a priority (Aiken, 2011). Recently, there have been modifications taken place toward the current nursing shortage, the decrease of nursing graduates, a workforce that is becoming older, and other factors that influence nurse educator shortage (Baker, Fitzpatrick, & Griffin, 2011). Nurse educators are required to advise students, complete research, and perform committee work all while teaching (Baker, Fitzpatrick, & Griffin, 2011). They also have multiple jobs outside of practicing nursing and teaching. Nurse educators have stressful roles that hold many expectations, yet there is no independence in making their own decisions concerning things. Aiken (2011) suggests that the best way to begin combatting this shortage should include increasing the number of nurses who hold a bachelor’s degree in nursing from 50% to 80% by 2020 (p. 196). Forty-eight percent of nurse instructors are expected to be aged 55 and older and are predicted to retire by this time. (Baker, Fitzpatrick, & Griffin, 2011).
Completing my Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) has been one of my goals after I graduated from my Associate Degree in Nursing, and I said one of my goals because my ultimate goal is to become an Advance Practice Registered Nurse.
