The teaching and learning of biology is very important because the knowledge of biology helps in improving the quality of life of people and helps in solving many societal problems relating to health, food storage, crop production and environmental conservation. In Ghana the importance accorded biology, in the school curriculum from the basic level to the senior high level reflects accurately the vital role it plays in contemporary society. The rationale for teaching elective biology at the SHS level include the fact that the survival of humans and the development of nations would ever depend more and more on science and technology. Biology however, as a branch of natural science is devoted to the study of life and activities of all living things from bacteria to high plants and animals. The survival of humans nevertheless depends greatly on the knowledge and understanding of the structure and functions of organisms and how they interact with one another and the environment. The renaissance period relished the human body and the talents of a person: humanism, a view where humans are the main importance, inspired many renaissance artists. The word renaissance means “rebirth”, for much of its works, such as art were based off of the works of the past. The Greeks and the Romans cherished the human body and intellect: almost all of the work from that time period focused on the ideal human body and the intellectual ability of man. Great artists and sculptors from Greece and Rome created perfect human bodies, while architects, great thinkers and mathematicians, developed ways to build structures, such as arches, in both ascetically and mathematically pleasing manners. Humans of the renaissance revitalized idealism and humanism; however, they diverged from the “middle ages”, where most art focused on non-human subjects, for the people depicted were mostly unrealistic, without perspective or any dimensions.

The theory of evolution was first proposed by Charles Darwin (1990) and is described as process by which all biotic creatures have developed and advanced from primitive organisms through changes occurring over time. The relevance of this fundamental theory is witnessed throughout the many disciplines of the pathology department in subject area biomedical science. Biomedical science consists of seven major disciplines; haematology, transfusion science, clinical chemistry, histology, virology, cytology, immunology and medical microbiology. However, significance of evolutionary theory had a drastic impact on mostly haematology and some virology.
Learning the anatomy of an animal for educational purposes can create a better learning experience. Many schools of the United States today require science courses to have animal dissections to create a better understanding of basic anatomy. School children in science classes have dissected a frog or worm to see how the body structure is similar to humans. In the medical field, student nurses and doctors learn from dissecting animals first before moving on to human cadavers. Kristien Mcdonald, of The Daily Utah Chronicle comments, “we could just do research on dead bodies” (2). Even though that’s an alternative, there is a limited amount of cadavers for students to study on, so the usual alternative would be animals that are mass-produced in farms.

In what ways are the various kinds of animals alike or unlike in structure, internal processes, and modes of life? How do animals carry on their activities? How are the many kinds related to one another? In what ways does man resemble and differ from other living things? The answers to many of these questions are provided by the science of zoology.” (General Zoology, page 3). While zoology does involve animals, the general study of zoology is far more complicated then one would imagine. Zoology is a branch of biology that studies the classification, origins, habitats and behaviors of organisms. Someone who studies zoology is a zoologist, and has the tasks of learning about new species and their habitats. It is a job that if mastered, can be one of the most fulfilling and knowledgeable careers someone can obtain.
From primary school, I was always amazed by the fact that the human body, composed of millions of cells, develops from a single fertilized mother cell. This idea triggered my interest for the science of human body. But the main reason I joined medical school was witnessing the actions of the excellent medical unit that saved my sister’s life, after her chocking on peanut. At the university, my interest in anatomy was amplified when I was studying anatomy in the second year. Later, this interest increased during various rotations in surgery and internal medicine.

Whenever asked what my favourite subject is, Biology has been, and will always be, my only answer. It was bewildering to compare my body to a machine working harmoniously. The digestive system, the respiratory system and the circulatory system are coordinating with each other right underneath my skin. Realising that the 'blue lines' visible beneath the flesh of my hands are actually veins carrying deoxygenated blood fueled my desire to know more about how my body functions. To me, it has always been about getting to know my self better.
I have ensured that I meet my students’ science needs by assuring that the material needed to be cover in the class was covered. Furthermost, the students are able to learn from exploring, which is different from teaching the students how to and giving them the information needed. The students were still able to learn the material needed to be covered by discovering the content.
Biochemists are scientists who study the chemistry relating to, biological organisms. It forms a bridge between biology and chemistry by studying how complex chemical reactions and chemical structures give rise to life and life's processes.
