Agriscience education has grown tremendously in the past few years, let alone few hundred. I knew that I had knowledge of the topic, growing up on a farm and being in FFA, but college has really helped expand my understanding. My attitude has always been positive, and continues to be so, but is now more aware of the diversity in agriscience education. My beliefs have only developed, just as agriculture has. Overall, I am so excited to see how the next few years will mature my knowledge, attitude, and beliefs about agriscience education.
Knowledge is obviously a large part of agriscience education, because that is essentially the career—to extend knowledge about agriculturally related topics to inform and mold the leaders of tomorrow. I used to naïvely believe that agriscience education was important to the betterment of society, but now I know that it is absolutely essential. I now know that it is imperative for young people to know the skills that I plainly took for granted and just thought that it was common knowledge due to my background on a farm. My favorite quote is by Joe Martin and although it focuses on The National FFA Organization, I believe that it perfectly encompasses the industry as a whole. It reads, “The organization has grown to be more than cows, sows and plows; the modern FFA is about beakers, speakers and job seekers.” Through this quote, we see how far agriculture has come since the turn of the century, which means that agriscience education has had to come just as far. Not only are teachers teaching young people about animals, plants, and structural mechanics, but they are teaching about job searches, integrity, and how to be the leaders of the
Originally, education was only attainable through wealth and the established schools were limited to teaching language and religion, also known as classical education. However, this act changed the precedent and provided an education at a reduced price to the lower and middle class citizens of America. The education from this act also met the demands of the growing, industrializing nation because it supplied educated scientists and engineers to help diminish the growing deficit the country had been experiencing since it was founded (Loss, C.). Many people seized this opportunity and their success in the land grant schools have significantly changed the way agriculture currently works. For example, it is common for farmers of today to account for the effects environment, rate of photosynthesis, respiration, and water consumption have on their crop yield, but without the students that attended the land-grant colleges established by the Morrill Act, this information may not have been found until many years later (Edmond). The evidence students witnessed in their studies was then used to provide a basic understanding of the different regions that crops and animals were better suited for. For instance, Arizona is best suited to grow winter wheat and sheep because of the arid environment, according to The Magnificent Charter.
Many students who are enrolled in FFA are already heading in the right direction to a bright future. FFA has many career benefits within the program. Any of the career development events (CDE’s) have something that will tie to a career in agriculture or to a career of other sorts. According to the National FFA Organization, “FFA members embrace concepts taught in agricultural science classrooms nationwide, build valuable skills through hands-on experiential learning and each year demonstrate their proficiency in competitions based on real-world agricultural skills”(“Statistics”). There are so many careers that tie into FFA, and many of them have to do with agriculture. Not every career that has to do with agriculture is about farming. The land-grant mission of Iowa State emphasizes students being problem solvers and researching improvement and protection of crops. The main purpose is to protect the planet by action and research so that it can be an international impact. Many articles, postings, research, and videos are shared through the Iowa Learning Farms Organization. The Iowa Learning Farms has a tremendous impact towards research and most of what the land-grant states.
An easy answer to the problem is to provide proper education. Educating the young is the best way to get a point across and ensure that the America of tomorrow is less ignorant than the America of today. Children are eager to learn new things and are the best tool to promote agriculture (Robinson, 2005). There are many methods that can be made available to people of all ages, especially children, to increase their knowledge about agriculture.
It provides character building and many memories for the people who are directly involved. Personally, I would not know who I would be or grow up as without the ag industry. The industry taught me responsibility, work ethic, and gave me my passion. The ag industry is not just some projects that last for a month or two. I raise dairy cattle, hogs, and dairy beef to present at my county fair and open shows. It teaches me responsibility to be able to care for these animals and to train them for show. This does not happen overnight. Year round I am in the barn feeding, washing, or getting them to trust me. The work does not come to an end after fair.
There are fewer farmers than ever, only two percent of the people in united states are farmers. As the average age of the farmer is fifty eight years old. These fact are something every ffa member can rattling off but, what if I could talk to you about something else. That average farmer isn’t just aging but also struggling. The real reality that the farmers and ranchers are being hurt by the modern day economy.
On Tuesday, November 10th I visited Mrs. Ewell at Hearne High School. The first class I observed was her second period Principles of Agriculture class. She has 9 students in this class including 1 new student that arrived today. In total there are 6 boys and 3 girls. The new student was obviously very nervous, but Mrs. Ewell was very accommodating and welcoming towards him. The class started by the students answering their daily challenge questions. What part of the flower attracts bees and other pollinators? What part of the flower supports the anther? What part of the flower holds the ovules? Every Monday the students get new vocabulary words, and their challenge questions always relate to those vocabulary words. I really liked the way Mrs. Ewell created a fun way for the students to remember the meaning of each word.
Outdoor work has always been important to me, both on the farm and off it. As someone who enjoys working with my hands to accomplish something that is challenging and productive, horticulture was a natural field for me to look into as a career. Horticulture requires both physical strength and mental ability that is practical and based on solving a real-life problem, rather than simply being an intellectual exercise or on arbitrary conditions. Horticulture as a term is a rather broad definition of a variety of careers and activities; is it merely backyard gardening or is it biological research culminating in genetically modifying plants for the advancement of our economy and well-being? The answer is honestly both, and in this aspect, horticulture is a rare field of study offering both simple (on the face of it, at least) manual labor and incredibly advanced research and study careers. Horticulture is also rare in that it has ties to both age-old practices and traditions of gardening and plant production and new-age philosophies of environmentalism, research, and science. People have been cultivating plants for decoration and sustenance for millennia, and horticulture is the best term to describe these activities. However, horticulture is also the best description of the work done by scientists, researchers, and educators to advance our knowledge of both how plants grow and develop and how the world can utilize these properties. With that being said, to learn more about careers in horticulture the following research paper will describe the definition of horticulture, the education and qualifications necessary, and the specific careers available in horticulture.
With the rise as with the technology, challenges for farmers are growing too as earlier growers had to have knowledge in agronomics, risk management, marketing their products and it has become even more competitive with the surge in new precision agricultural practices and products. The growers have to tone their IT skills in order to run their day to day life, analyze the enormous amount of data to optimize the operations and be up to date with the current trends and the competition in the market.
So overall, Agriculture is playing a very important role in changing the lifestyle of different people. Agriculture might have made everything easy for us but it still has its cons. We see the effects of agriculture and how it affects the lives of other species and the environment.
Our world is growing! Growing in population, that is, but the resources are staying the same. To help with the growth of the population that will be happening in the 21st century, science and agriculture need to work hand-in-hand. They need to stand together to make a break through together, to ensure that everyone has food on their plate. We need to work to have larger yields with the land we have.

People have depended on agriculture for years as the primary source of getting food. We have developed all kinds of ways to manipulate nature so what we can produce higher yield crops, more nutritious crops, bigger crops, crops that withstand cold, and farming equipment that allows us to manufacture these crops with relative ease. Why then are there five billion people being malnourished and forty thousand children dying each day from hunger? It seems as though world hunger is more a result of the lack of distributing the food properly than the lack of quantity. agriculture has turned into a high profit business and biotech companies like Monsanto are constantly trying to come up with better and more efficient ways of farming. Are they doing this to try to solve the world hunger crisis, or merely to make a profit?
Agriculture has always been one of the pillars that our nation’s economy depends upon. As this industry grows and expands agriculture is not just farming. There’s so many different occupations that are involved with the industry that aren’t out in the fields produces food and fiber. With such an evolving industry, education is key to make sure everyone is up to speed with the newest knowledge and technology. Agricultural education, plays a huge role in educating the people within the industry along with people that benefit from it.
