Strengths, Risks, and Resiliency Everybody has their own list of strengths, some may be obvious, where others may not be. After Thomas J. passed away, Vada was overwhelmed with grief. Shelly saw this and told Harry to stop hiding and running away from his daughters emotions. She stated that life isn’t just death and not to ignore the living, especially his daughter. After this conversation, the support that Vada received from her father increased. Which in return helped strengthen Vada’s support system overall. Another strength would be that the family does care about each other, even though they may not always show it. Each of these family members are resilient in their own way. They continue this belief, even though a thorough medical exam may have shown that they do not have a serious medical condition. It is a long term condition that can fluctuate in severity and may increase during times of stress. Individuals who are diagnosed with Illness Anxiety Disorder often find little or no reassurance from the doctor telling them that they are healthy or they can be easily alarmed about their health status (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2015). They may constantly talk about their health or possible illnesses and will frequently search for illnesses or for causes of symptoms. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy can help individuals identify their fears and beliefs, along with helping them become more aware of how their worries can affect not only them, but their behaviors as well (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2015).
