Many people have been persuaded to believe that being overweight is more of a major risk factor of death than being underweight. But, they are mistaken; believe it or not in reality being underweight puts you at a higher risk of death.
Do not misinterpret what I am trying to say. Both of these are serious health dilemmas we are facing today. They both can affect your health. Such as your energy levels and bone health. Excessive weight gain and loss can also negatively affect men and women's ability to procreate. Excess body weight is associated with reduced fertility for men. With women they can be diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome. Polycystic ovary syndrome is a condition with insulin resistance; that means the insulations causes the testosterone to rise and to balance the body out it is forced to halt ovulation. Low body weight causes a woman to stop menstruating. This condition is known as amenorrhea. When men are undernourished and puny their sperm count decreases significantly.

Overweight has been said to be deadlier because it involves deaths mostly involving your heart; which we all know is one of the most important organs in our body. Although, for people who are underweight they suffer from illnesses involving the whole body at once. In Joan Dunayer’s, “Here’s to Your Health” she attempts to contrast the “glamorous myths” about alcohol advertisement. Specifically those alcohol advertisement that are presented by U.S. media, and popular culture to what Dunayer considers to be “factual data”. Throughout she offers counterexamples to each of the presented alcohol advertisement by using “factual data” to plays on the readers’ common knowledge, but gives no sources. Dunayer try to strength of her argument on society’s acceptance of alcohol and the media’s prolific showing alcohol ads when she says, “more than 300,000 alcohol commercials appeared on U.S. television”, this agreement sound logically but her statements are addressed to a very specific audience or reader (Dunayer).

Obesity is strongly associated with diseases of the heart and blood vessels in many ways (Smith 5). Firstly, obese people are more probable to develop atherosclerosis, which is a hardening of the arteries occurring when there is a build-up of fat, cholesterol, and other substances in the body. It is proven that atherosclerosis is more prevalent in obese individuals than individuals who are not. This condition can lead to a myocardial infarction, or what we call a heart attack. After a heart attack, it is very difficult for one to recuperate, especially a child. Following a heart attack, the heart is damaged and may not be able to pump sufficient amounts of blood throughout your body and death or disability may occur.
There are some impacts of the effects that obesity has on sex. Some include low self-esteem, body image issues, low testosterone, erectile dysfunction, diabetes, less stamina, and etc. It has been said in an article, Obesity Affects Sex Quality and Quantity, from The Observer, that people that are over weight seem to have a lower sex drive due to their self esteem and body issues that they have developed. In the article it is said that men who are obese are more likely to have higher blood pressure and diabetes than those of a normal weight, both diseases are harmful to the body and they can cause erectile dysfunction (ED) and Candida, which is a vaginal infection, in women. The article explained that from the lack of blood flow it causes ED because not enough blood is able to circulate from the body and into the penis to cause an erection, and if an erection is obtained it is considered a weak erection.

Obese people are predisposed to pseudotumor cerebri, which is when pressure inside the skull increased. The brain is affected in a way that the condition appears to be but it is not a tumor. To identify pseudotumor cerebri, doctors look for the existence of swollen optic nerves called papilledema when they examine the back of the eye (How Obesity Harms the Body, 2013). This illness occurs more frequently in women than it does in men, especially obese women who are near menopause. It causes severe headaches and compromised vision. At least one study shows that obese people have a tendency to have a lower IQ and have brain abrasions similar to those seen in Alzheimer’s patients.
It causes heart diseases from high cholesterol and high blood pressure, asthma, and type 2 diabetes, and other health conditions. Obese children can have weight related health problems all the way into adulthood. This is something we need to resolve not only does it because physical pains but also psychological issues. Obese children tend to have low self-esteem and other social problems because of their weight. This is caused from the discrimination that overweight children and adults can face in their life.
The health of an individual and their communities is affected by several elements which combine together. Whether an individual is healthy or not, is determined by their circumstances and environment.1 To a greater extent, factors such as where an individual lives, their relationships with family and friends, the state of their environment, income, genetics and level of education all have significant impacts on health, however the more frequently considered factors such as access and use of health care facilities regularly have less of an impact.6 Determinants of health is a term which was introduced in the 1970s as part of a broader analysis of research and policy on public health. Researchers argued that there was a lot of attention and too much expenditure on health being dedicated to individuals and their illnesses, and little or no investment in populations and their health. It was decided that public health should be more concerned with social policies and social determinants than with health facilities and the outcomes of diseases.7 The determinants of health include social and economic environment, physical environment and an individual’s behaviour and characteristics. The environment of an individual determines their health, holding responsible an individual for having poor health or acknowledging them for good health is inappropriate. Individuals are not likely to be able to control several of the determinants of health. These determinants that make individuals healthy or not include the factors above, and numerous others.6
The first health probably from being overweight is Coronary Heart Disease. When a person’s body weight rises so does there risk for coronary heart diseases or CHD. CHD is a condition when a waxy substance called plaque starts to build up inside of the coronary arteries. The coronary arteries supply oxygen filled blood to the heart. Plaque will narrow or block these arteries which will reduce blood flow to the heart and muscles. This could cause a heart attack in person and being obese can also lead to heart failure. This is a very serious condition where your heart can’t pump enough blood to meet your body’s needs. The next thing is high blood pressure and this is when the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps blood. If this pressure on the walls of the arteries stays too high over time it will damage the body in many ways. So if a person is overweight then they have a higher change of having high blood pressure. When a person is obese it can lead to a build of plaque in your arteries and if one of these areas of plaque rupture it can cause a blood clot to form. Hopefully this clot is not by a person’s brain because if it is it can block the flow of blood to your brain and cause a stroke. The dictionary definition of mental health is, “psychological well-being and satisfactory adjustment to society and to the ordinary demands of life, the field of medicine concerned with the maintenance or achievement of such well-being and adjustment” (Dictionary.com). In other words, mental health is the way people deal with their feelings and how they act throughout their day. Mental diseases, such as depression, could cause people to think of going through the day as a chore and could become really upset at the idea of having to continue to get up and do the same thing over and over again. Mental illnesses cause people to look at life differently or see good things through a different eye.
