Allies are important to have because they give you the ability to do things which you would not able to do on your own, whether it be limited by resources or connection. Allies also can help you to understand the concept or idea on a deeper level because they could have supported it for a longer time or have a more personalized experience with the subject. For instance I am not a woman and do not identify as such, but do believe that they should be treated equally within the government and the economy. If I was to become an avid activist I would be open to hearing what other with experience have to say about what it is like an the daily struggle of what it is to be a women. Also, due to the fact that I am a man and identify as such I have …show more content…
The other thing is when people begin to realize who they are as they go through life they may have a change in their identity wheel. This is why it is important to be an ally to a person because then they know they can be themselves instead of trying to be what people want them to be. This reminds me of when we were in class and the statistics for the LGBTQ teens and how difficult it can be to be themselves because of society. Due to these self reported stats people need to speak up about the discrimination of all people and how we should move to a society more based on equity. People should not stop until society overall has shifted to a better place for everyone to live. Another motivation for being an ally is that everyone has the right to be happy with who they are and if they are being oppressed by society then they are not allowed the ability to be happy with themselves. This is something which is important to me personally because I believe everyone should be happy, now this is a within reason thing. If someone's version of happy is something which causes harm to another, they should not be happy in that regard. However, if a person can be happy by being themselves they then by all means they should be happy just like anyone else has the ability
Cooperation in our global world is essential for harmony and peace. In Blood on the River, Carbone shows us the importance of friends, colonists, and natives. This relates to our modern world, which cooperation is important to live life. Without cooperation, we would not be able to work with other countries and the people around us. Even in our modern world, cooperation is still the key to
The search for one’s identity can be a constant process and battle, especially for teenagers and young adults. Many people have a natural tendency to want to fit in and be accepted by others, whether it be with family, friends or even strangers. They may try to change who they are, how they act, or how they dress in order to fit in. As one gets older, society can influence one’s view on what they should look like, how they should act, or how they should think. If society tells us that a certain body type or hair color is beautiful, that is what some people strive for and want to become in order to be more liked. This was especially true with Avery as she longed for the proper clothes to fit into a social group and began to change the way she spoke to match those around her. As a young and impressionable sixth grader, she allowed herself to become somewhat whitewashed in an attempt to fit in with the other girls. However, Avery did not really become friends with any of those girls; her only real friend was
On the other hand, ideally one should be true to one’s heart, if Disney’s Mulan is to be believed. But these are neither solid pieces of advice nor wise counsel; they are at best hand-wavy, wishy-washy statements that offer no guidance on traveling the minefield that is remaining true to oneself. In fact, given the wide swath of human experiences, it is difficult to imagine a panacea effective for each and every trial and tribulation people may encounter in maintaining the integrity of their identities; personally, I don't think one exists. Just as there are myriad events, emotions, and memories from which one’s identity develops, it surely follows that there are just as many ways social norms act to compromise one’s individuality, ostensibly for the worse. Therefore, it seems that an indirect solution would best serve individuals filled and bombarded with doubt about who they really are; namely, the unwavering support of a community would allow individuals to resolve, on their own terms, their inner conflicts stemming from outward

Our lives are defined by our experiences of growing up and of who people are when people are developing. Both, in their respective regards, are something that can be difficult to alter to the individual. Gender, race, classes, and other building blocks of our identity are always shifting to who anyone is and while a person can’t affect themselves, society can, and often does change their perspective towards their own identity and how they interact with the stimulation outside of their psyche.
Such an encounter becomes a source of discomfort and momentarily a crisis of racial meaning. Without a racial identity, one is in danger of having no identity" (Michael Omi, Howard Winant, 12). It is obvious when we look at someone we try to get a sense of who they are. We categorize people within our society and place them by gender, ethnicity, race, religion, and even social class. Because one of the first things we utilize is race and gender it is questioned that without racial identity one is in danger of having no identity. Personally, I believe that this is true, for instance, within our society gender roles are very apparent. We utilize gender as a form of identity, because many people now are coming forward with wanting to change their identity there has been ann uproar to try to fight against equality for citizens that identify with a different gender. What is to be considered is the same uproar that is occurring with people who identify with a gender is also occurring with citizens that are identified solely on race. Within our different generations there has been an uprising in mixed races, a person can be
College is a place where people go to learn and to grow as a person. Most people go to college for the same reasons. They want to set a good foundation for getting a job, experience new things, or because their parents wanted them to. All of those reasons apply to me also.
They may hide their identities because they are different from others in their communities; in contrast, they will accept who they are if their families and friends support them. Since environment changes people slowly, people should live in the community which they feel comfortable, then they can learn their identities easily.
"Identity is a dynamic feature of social life. That is, it is something that is constantly evolving and changing. For some people, identity can change rapidly and dramatically, of course, but for most of us our identities evolve slowly and imperceptibly" (Livesey, n.d., p.1).
In society, people react to adversity differently. They may choose to overcome those difficulties or they are unable to adapt to those adversity can cause them to suffer from loss of identity.
Just think about the number of missed opportunities that occur when we aren’t able to make the move. Our existing prejudices and stereotypes are what hold us back from the acknowledgement of others, which leads to a detrimental state for our own sense of identity. How do we learn about ourselves? The answer is through reflection; this reflection happens through seeing how others view themselves. In a world where people are separated, misjudged and misperceived, we are only getting one small piece of who we are.
You are as others see you, yet others do not always see you as you are. With the importance others play on the sense of identity, it's no wonder that peers influence the minds of individuals early on in life. As young toddlers, children do not recognize biological
Those “different people,” such as the intersexed, transgendered, or even biological males/females that differ from our social (daily) norms in the end are not that different.
What is ideology? How can it help us understand media? Use academic literature to support your argument.
In the end, countries that cooperate and do not discriminate against each other will help themselves and the world flourish. If these developed countries continue to prejudge underdeveloped countries by wealth or other conditions, when people are faced with serious problems in society, these problems become global. By helping each other, all countries offer hope and compassion, and share new knowledge with each other. Therefore, people all over the world would suffer less, because they know they are not alone.
