• Knowing your students is crucial to the learning environment. As the classroom teacher I am the one who these students see five times a week for seven hours a day. It is important to keep a professional relationship with the students but to also build a relationship that allows you to understand students and relate content to them directly. I want to know aspects of their lives such as what their interests are. I want to know about how they learn best and how I can help them achieve in my classroom. Knowing what their home life is like as well is extremely important because it gives me a sense of who my students really are and what kind of support they are getting out of the classroom.
1. How do my students learn best? For example: are they visual, kinesthetic, or hands on learners? Do they need specific seating arrangements, or accommodations?
2. I want to know what motivates my students! I want to know what hobbies they have, what type of environment they work best in, and what there outlook is about school, do they like school or dislike school.

I then will look at my ending goal. I want to know where I want and need my students to be at the end of my lesson. I will also take into consideration where my students stand with prior knowledge to the subject I will be teaching. I also think it is important for myself to know the content well in order to teach it to my students, most effectively. The relationship that a teacher creates with their students can affect the environment or atmosphere of the classroom. In an article, by Hamre & Pianta (2001), it states that, “supportive relationships help maintain students’ interests in academic and social pursuits, which in turn lead to better grades and more positive peer relationships” (p. 49). Most students will work harder for teachers if they build a good connection with the student. Teachers will also look more “human” to a student and remind them that the teacher does care very much about them. The article also states that, “Talking with students about their lives outside of school is one way teachers can show an interest in and appreciation for students” (Hamre & Pianta, 2001, p. 54). Students love talking about their lives outside of school and their interests. It also allows them to show their personalities and lets the student know that their teacher wants to know about
Teachers help us expand and open our mind by giving us skills throughout students’ early life to help students when they are older. By learning information from teachers, students become better people, in a couple of ways. Besides inquiring knowledge from their teachers, students learn to work with one another, open their mind to other peoples’ thoughts and ideas, respect one another, and learn different techniques for life’s issues.
Tuesday at 10:00a.m., I interviewed with Dr. Ann Griffith about becoming my research mentor and working in her lab. As a potential mentor, Dr. Griffith seems to be prefect in compatibility. She has a great personality and seems to really understand my concerns and schedule. I may bond better with her because she is a woman and she understands a lot of the struggles women endure every day, especially working mothers. She has several publications, one for instance: “Metabolic Damage and Premature Thymus Aging Causes by Stromal Catalase Deficiency”. This paper really gives good insight into understanding the lab’s interest and where I may possible fit into the balance. In the course of our meeting, I was better able to assess Dr. Griffith as my potential mentor based on these aspects and other informative topics from our discussion that would personally affect me the most.
I always strive to meet the educational needs of every group of students I work with. My work experience has led me to hold two conclusions regarding building relationships with educators.
I will teach to the objectives and I will teach to the standards. I will make sure that my lessons are hitting on as many standards as possible.
A peer mentor is a program collaborative with the FYE (first year seminar) to provide help for the first year student. To help student overcome the challenge transition to college life, Sacramento state offer a program that would help them adjust to the new start. This program launched during 2002-2003 and the program has grown from group of 5 to 39 peer mentor to serve and help first year students.

Van Meter gave me some interesting ideas when I asked her to describe the different ways she motivated her students. One way she motivates students is to really get the know them individually and build a good rapport with each one. She told me that students what to be valued and validated, and knowing their teachers cares about them and will listen to their problems gives them the motivation to come to school and do their best. Another way Ms. Van Meter motivates her students includes utilizing verbal praise, allowing her students to display work that they are proud of, letting her students call their parents during the day to announce a good grade on an assignment, and giving her students ways and opportunities to praise and receive praise from their peers.
Another important aspect of reaching every student is creating an environment of trust, respect, and community in the classroom so that every student feels comfortable reaching out for help and no one feels judged or stupid for needed extra time or reading books of a different level. My overall feeling about implementing the mentor study with the children were good. I enjoyed reading the different Eric Carle books with my student. This was perfect timing ,in class we were studying a dance from one of his books, so the students already knew a lot about him. One of the things that was difficult about doing the mentor project would be, all my students were wanting to write about different stories. I know that was the point of the project, but I wish I had of done the creating of the book one at a time. I felt like it became very overwhelming with the students telling me about their stories that they were creating. One of the things that went well was the mentor card.
