Mission Statement
To provide an educational hands on experience while at the Florida Aquarium, and provide insight to a college experience while at the University of South Florida, to allow for a better planed future and education for the students.
Aims/Objectives:
To provide an educational fun experience while learning about marine life at the Florida Aquarium and providing insight to a collegiate future while touring the USF.
We want the customers to obtain knowledge while learning hands on and visually while at the aquarium, also we want the customers to learn about USF’s programs and opportunities.
We have specific goals that we want to accomplish and specific things we would like the students attending to learn and benefit from. Our goals

are S.M.A.R.T., they are very specific with what we want to accomplish and provide for our customers. The goal is measureable, being that the marine science exam will measure if the students learned or benefited in any way from visiting the aquarium. This is attainable because we are able to look at the exam results to see the benefits of the students visiting the aquarium. The goals are realistic since our trip is not too far away and it is very educational, the goals are timely, because our trip can be done in a 12 hour period. Team Roles/ Staffing Belbin Team Roles: At the beginning of this project my group was told to go on to the Belbin Team Roles website, http://www.belbin.com/about/belbin-team-roles/. Each person in the group took the team roles test and was given a team role that best fit their personality. Belbin has nine different roles that a person can fall under. Our team had one person in four different roles, so our team was complete. We assigned jobs based on the role that Belbin suggested. Team Leader: I was assigned the role as team leader, because of my ability to effectively guide a team and ensure a goal is accomplished. My job is to delegate tasks, provide guidance, and ensure all tasks are accomplished. The qualities that qualify me to be team leader are my responsibility and extensive leadership roles. Belbin team roles is a website we used to determine what kind of group member we are, Belbin helped me identify my leadership characteristics and my ability to lead a team. The Belbin team roles analysis applies to me as the Co-coordinator. The Co-coordinator is classified as a person who is mature, confident, clarifies goals, and delegates effectively. All of these traits describe me, which qualifies me for team leader. Financial Manager: Nakia is our financial manager. The job of the financial manager is to control and determine the price of the trip, manage information about trip funds, and to share that information with the team. The skills that qualify Nakia for this role is his ability to communicate effectively, and his financial management skills. The Belbin analysis applies to Nakia, because he is considered the “Resource Specialist”. Belbin classifies Resource Specialist as a person who is outgoing and enthusiastic, and explores different opportunities and contacts. All of these things qualify him, because an effective financial manager is able to handle money, be explorative in his resources, and able to make contacts. Detail Planner: McKayla is the “detail planner” he jobs is to plan all the small details of our trip. She has great attention to detail, and is able to communicate with any contacts or opportunities. The Belbin Team roles applies to McKayla as the Completer Finisher. The Completer Finisher polishes the plans for any errors and perfects the plans for the trip. Marketing Manager: Alexander is the marketing manager. He is able to effectively plan ideas for marketing and he is able to accomplish those plans. Alexander is creative, which enables many ideas for different marketing styles. The Belbin Team Roles applies to Alexander as the implementer. The implementer is able to plan a workable strategy to carry out a plan. Alexander is able to do all of these things. Time Scales: 7:45 A.M. - Leave Q.I. Roberts for the Aquarium 10:30 A.M. - Arrive at the Florida Aquarium divide into tour groups 12:00 P.M. - Leave for USF 12:20 P.M. - Arrive at USF 12:25 P.M. - Eat lunch at USF food court 1:15 P.M. - Meet with Brie for Info and tour school 3:00 P.M. - Leave school for Rest Stop 4:30 P.M. - Stop at Rest stop 5:00 P.M. - Continue on route for school 6:00 P.M. - Arrive back at school We chose to set up the itinerary like this for several reasons.
We wanted to leave the school by 7:45 A.M. at the latest in order to reach the Aquarium at the scheduled time. We set the time at the Aquarium for 10:30 A.M. because it takes 2 ½ hours to travel to Tampa. We chose to eat lunch at USF at 12:00 P.M., which is a normal lunch time for our students. USF was a better choice for lunch since it had more options than the Aquarium. At USF the food court/ student center was our choice of dining since our participants would receive a variety of food choices and they would get to experience student life at the university. At 1:15 P.M. we had to meet with Brie Nestler, the tour coordinator, to receive the information pamphlets on the university. After our meeting with Brie we would need about 2 hours and 45 minutes to tour the main school buildings. We needed to leave the school by 3:00 P.M. in order to avoid traffic and arrive back to the school by 6:00 P.M. My group decided it would be nice to have a small bathroom and snack break on the way home from Tampa, so we wanted the rest stop about halfway or so through the trip, which would be about 4:30 P.M. We will be back on the road by 5:00P.M. in order to be back at the school by 6:00 P.M., which is the designated time on our permission
slips. Gantt Chart: Customers Our customers are the 11th grade class and the Marine Science class. We choose these as our customers, because of the educational value the aquarium will provide to the Marine Science class, and the insight to college for the junior class. Our internal customers are the chaperones, and us, the tour guides, the external customers are the 11th grade class and the Marine Science class. While on the trip our customers will need a bathroom break, snack break, and lunch break. To provide their needs we will stop for the restroom and snacks on the way home, and eat lunch at one of the dining halls at USF. Marketing Strategy To market our trip we plan to do a number of things. We will market at lunch with announcements, in the morning with announcements, with posters throughout the school, and with grassroots marketing throughout the Marine Science class. The group decided on this marketing strategy the trip is open to the Marine Science class, which everyone in our group takes. If the individuals in our group each take the trip idea back to their Marine Science class we are likely to get more people to want to go from the Marine Science class. We chose to do announcements both in the morning and at lunch for the students that are not in the Marine Science classes. Finally, we decided on posters so any students who are not at lunch or morning announcements will be informed through the posters. Resource Needs The human capital needed for our trip is at least five adult chaperones, and the five tour guides of our group .The physical capital needed for this trip is our bus, Florida Aquarium tickets, and information packets from the University of South Florida. The actual capital for this trip is going to be $400.00 for the Florida Aquarium tickets, and $1,009 for the charter bus. This equals out to $35.00 per person. The student is paying $27.00 towards the charter bus and paying $8.00 for a student ticket to the aquarium, which adds up to the $35.00 dollars per person. The members of my group will have to pay $8.00 for the Aquarium tickets, but we will not have to pay the $27.00 for the charter bus being that we were not calculated into the number of people paying for the bus. Contingency Plan As some precautions for our trip we have set up some solutions to possible problems that may occur while we are on our trip the Florida Aquarium and the University of South Florida. If a child were to get lost on our trip, we would immediately report the missing student to the information desk and we would spread out into groups to search for them. If a student gets hurt while on our trip there are a few things we would do, the first would be to ensure the student received the medical attention they needed by taking them to the first aid desk, we would then contact their parents to let them know the student was injured. If for some reason the aquarium closes temporarily we will go directly to the college and extend our tour there. If the college is unable to be toured because of special circumstances, such as a shooting etc. We will extend our tour at the aquarium and eat lunch at the nearby Chik-fil-a. For some reason if the bus breaks down we will wait for Annett to send a backup charter and we will shorten our times at our destination. If the bus is late, the same thing will happen, we will simply shorten the time at our destinations according to how late the bus was. Legal: For our trip the legal requirement is to have a signed permission slip. The permission slip needs to be signed by the legal parent/guardian and if the student is a middle or high school student, they also need to sign it, saying that they will have good behavior. A permission slip is a legal document that releases the school for anything that may happen. On the permission slip there needs to be the trip date, date permission slip was issued, destination, and organization. For the permission slip we will use a blue paper to match the aquarium theme. We will also put a letter explaining our trip on the front of the permission slip. The students must ride on the bus and if a parent wants to drive them back, they must have a written letter that they are checking them out from school. No other student can ride with them. For the trip chaperones we will need five adults, these adults will be from the front office, which means they will have the school required form already filled out. Any parents that want to go on the trip must follow behind the bus. Following is a copy of the permission slip we used for our trip, this is a legal document and it must be signed by the student’s parent or guardian.
Within the assumptions of the structural frame we will use it The first and most notable structural management issue is the goals that were setup by the aquarium. The original goal of the aquarium, as stated in the first mission statement, was, “make known the world of water through education, research, and exhibition.” Since the aquarium wanted to attract a diverse population into the aquarium the mission statement was amended to say a “responsive community resource to attract the broadest possible audience”, and a “culturally diverse staff.” There were many different types of programs to reach the goals of the aquarium, but they...
I am very familiar with the operation. On the basis of volunteer work I have done at REEF, I have been hired several times by a company call Geo Marine. Geo Marine does research on coral reef systems for the United States Navy. I have good insight on how non-profit organizations and for profit companies operate in the marine conservation field. I might even have been able to write this short “reflective” paper extemporaneously without doing an interview, because I have been in the midst of informally conducting this interview with many individuals for the last twenty years. Nevertheless, I learned some good specific...
Perhaps the most visible and obvious structural issue revolves around the aquarium's mission statement and goals. As noted in the case study, the original mission statement "make known the world of water through education, research, and exhibition" concentrates on its goal to bring sea life to the community. The new mission statement saw the aquarium as a "responsive community resource that attracts the broadest possible audience delivering highest quality experience" and as "a culturally diverse staff."

Within the state of Florida there are dozens of individualized, non-profit organizations making an effort to help the local wildlife. The local land and marine wildlife includes birds, geckos, frogs, snakes, panthers, manatees, sea turtles, fishes, sharks, corals, lizards and many, many more. Florida State is located on the Southeastern tip of the United States providing a unique opportunity for conservation of salt-water animals. While there are animal conservation efforts taking place all over the world, this essay will focus on two animal species that humans are specifically trying to save in Florida State. The two main animal species of focus are manatees and sea turtles.
I’m applying to SEA Semester, because I love the ocean. It’s been my dream from a young age to learn to sail and live on a ship. I’m from Aroostook County in Northern Maine, which is five hours away from the ocean. Every summer my parents would make sure I got to the ocean at least once, and I’ve romanticized it since I can remember. Since coming to Bowdoin, I’ve always spent my weekends biking and driving to the ocean, because it’s become a place for me to think clearly and escape the fast-paced life of a college student. The ocean has developed into my happy place, which is why I want to study it and understand how humans are impacting it. I want my undergraduate studies to give me the knowledge needed to protect our oceans in the future, and to be able to conduct research to expand our knowledge of the ocean. To be able to live on a tall ship and continue my studies of the ocean is my dream.
Central Idea: To show the benefits of Government funded exploration and examination of the oceanic environments across the globe.
At Six Flags Marine World in Vallejo, CA a new exhibit was opened to provide an interactive experience with the parks residents. These “Ocean Discovery” exhibits now include a 200,000 gallon tank containing three to five of the parks 14 Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphins. The dolphins have been removed from their natural habitats deprived from an annexed refuge and placed in petting pools poorly located and smaller than that of an average living room.
“The Ocean’s Glory – and Horror” is a speech given by Brian Skerry that depicts the impact humans can have on the ocean and the species within it. Brian Skerry is an underwater photographer and decided that people didn’t completely understand what was occurring underneath the surface of that sparkly blue ocean that they love so much. Skerry emphasizes how the audience needs to explore these different perspectives to get a new understanding of how life beneath the ocean’s surface really works. This lecture also grabbed my attention due to the fact that it goes along with my major in marine biology. The entire speech focuses on giving the audience a new point of view of the ocean and key factors in preserving the beauty of the deep blue. This
With 1.5 million acres of Everglades stretching across south Florida, three areas are the most important to visit(NPS). The northern and southern sections along with the area in the middle divides the Everglades into these three main sections, all of which are accessible from different places. To begin with, I will simply be staying at my house, which is only 30 miles away from Everglades National Park. I would start by going to the southern section of the park and entering to the visitors station. This way, I can get the most information about the journey I will soon be embarking on. After I get all the information I need, I will then head north to Shark Valley Trail, which consists of an observation tower, a boardwalk, and an otter cave trail. Visiting the observation tower will bring me to higher elevations and give me a panoramic view of the entire park. From here, I can see the abundance of sawgrass that covers the Everglades and wildlife such as alligators and wood storks. Next on my journey, I will travel west towards the Ten Thousand Islands. For this part of my trip, I will take a boat tour in order to really get the best experience as possible. The tour will take me through one of the world’s largest mangrove forests. Manatees, eagles, ospreys, and dolphins are a common attraction during this tour(Ten Thousands Island Cruise). Lastly, after experiencing

My core competencies are creative thinking, organizational and planning, oral and written communication, attention to detail, initiative, decision-making, adaptability, and teamwork.
“What Ocean Classroom did for 20 years was an absolutely terrific program,” Belanger said. “It was a hard decision to make, but we knew it needed to be done.”
When one says aquariums must people automatically think of the standard 24” x 12” x 12” rectangular tank that may exist have in a living room or dining room. But the matter of the fact is that aquariums are more than just a couple of fishes in a glass box.
We must have the correct mind-set. We believe our students can learn; have high expectations; are willing to give extra help; find ways to make
People who take their time to join organization and advocate for things such as endangered marine species tend to be, and need to be passionate about the issue. Which is a great thing, because they can get more people on board with the cause. With them being fully aware of the issue of endangered marine species. Those passionate people are the first step for organization fighting to solve the pro...
