According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, learning is, “the activity or process of gaining knowledge or skill by studying, practicing, being taught, or experiencing something.”(Merriam-Webster, n.d. Web, Nov. 2015, p12). You can learn in every situation and we all learn our best in our own ways. This class has opened my mind up to being a more intentional learner. In my introduction to the class I chose the quote I did because I feel that being prepared equals more opportunity for being successful. I will have more success in life or favor if I am more prepared for the things that could happen. When FITing your learning patterns you are supposed to forge those areas you avoid, intensify the areas you are use as needed in, and tether your use first areas. Since I am use as needed for all the learning patterns I have been working on intensifying each pattern to strengthen my use in each area. I have been practicing self-regulation all throughout this course. After learning my patterns, I realized why I had been unsuccessful before in college. I realized that although I am use as needed for all of my patterns that there are certain areas where I need improvement. For example, I can intensify my sequence my creating better study habits by setting aside specific times and dates that will focus solely on school where I will have no distractions. I have also practiced using a word wall to figure out what each task is asking of me and which pattern I need to use to be successful. I plan to use self-regulation to know why I am unsuccessful or unproductive and how to fix that, and metacognition to accurately figure out how I need to respond to everything. I plan to start using the writing center more often for my assignments and just to help myself study grammar and writing skills in general. I also plan to start using word walls to decode what an assignment is asking of me. I am also making sure I stick to setting aside times and days devoted to school work and studying so that I can eliminate distractions and successfully focus on school
As Zig Ziglar once said, "If you are not willing to learn, no one can help you. If you are determined to learn, no one can stop you." Basically, Ziglar is emphasizing how learning can be accomplished, only if you put your mind to it. In “Learning (Your First Job),” Dr. Robert Leamnson shares his strong belief of beginning students entering the post-secondary education. Leamnnson discusses the many ways of learning that can be used in college, such as studying, notes, assignments, and exams. Leamnson continuously discusses how no one will learn unless they want to. Learning is a biological process that relies on the brain. Just like how our bodies need maintenance, the brain does too. College is a place where you learn things that help you later. Leamnson mentions how students are responsible for succeeding in college not by just showing up, but by putting in effort towards the classes they are taking. In order to succeed in the learning of the post-secondary education process, students should be aware of how to make notes, understand what they are studying, and take assignments seriously.
Learning is important for countless reasons, the most important reason being that it molds a person into who he or she is. What people choose to learn, and also what they choose not to, create the core of their opinions as individuals. Though people do not admit it or openly declare it, it is fair to say almost everyone is self centered. Because of this, and the fact that learning dramatically affects a person, learning is not only thrilling, but also expressive. Furthermore, since learning is expressive, its meaning varies from person to person, therefore making each person’s experiences with learning unique and life changing.
Habits cannot be improved overnight; they take a long time and lots of persistence. Every time someone chooses not to attempt to perk up their habits, their chances of successfully changing them fall to zero. I credit small wins, which are “influence[s] disproportionate to the accomplishments of the victories to themselves,” for improving my study habits (Duhigg 112). There is a clear cause and effect here that is predictable, small wins set in motion another small win and many small wins become big wins. I had many small wins. I did little by little to eventually get entire assignments and readings done. To sum up, I stopped procrastinating when I discovered that the library signals me to start doing my homework causing me to find other useful habits that were invaluable to getting stuff
Second, I want to be more engaged in class. I need to be sure that I am up to date for all assignments that are due, motivated myself to do well in classes and hope to achieve a passing grade. By being involving myself with asking for help from professors, seeking out for a tutor and possibility managing my time better. This is a learning goal because I often struggled with being unaware of how I am going to do in class and this can help me understand what to do to be successful in college. As an adult student, it is not easy to manage the demands of work; spouse and children; and the need to set aside time to read, research, write, and complete specified assignments. The biggest complaint conveyed by adult students is that they simply don’t have enough time. The fact is time management is crucial so you don’t lose sight of your goals. Students’ time is a limited resource. Like other limited resources, time can be more or less effectively managed (Britton, 1991, p.405). It is hard to address my perspective of my own procrastination and my ability to learn. Now that I’m older and looking at the facts of where I am now in life, I should be a lot further in my college goals. Many young adults wish someone sat them down early in life and guided them in a wiser direction. A college degree is essential in the career world.
During high school, I did not have to study as hard as I do now that I am in college. Usually, I would be able to study the day before the test and score a hundred percent. Although, occasionally, I would be able to skip a few classes and get the notes from a classmate or of course, resort to guessing. However, now that I am in college, the lectures require much more attentiveness and are more complex: composing more information, meaning that one has to proportion time more responsibly and take an advantage of good study habits. My learning skills have made a complete transformation since I have been in college. I learned new things and I actually enjoy learning new things. Nevertheless, these changes required a lot of self control and practice. Going through these experiences have changed my entire persona about learning such as study habits, being more attentive during classes, and going through greater extents to succeed in certain classes.
When I think about what counts as learning to me, I think about my life. Just being able to live in this world to me is a learning experience, because I feel that my life is full of lessons and I believe that it takes lessons to learn in life. I feel that I have learned to understand learning more and to also understand the value of learning. As I get older I can comprehend subject matters more than I could ever do before. I am learning to be more serious and I find myself not taking life for granted anymore.
It worked for me to an extinct like I had to basically form an alliance or network of people who were in my classes to get myself to stay focused and sometimes help them stay focused. I used to think i needed a small pill in order to get through a tough test or stay up all night cramming all the information I need for the test the next day. But I learned if instead of cramming i studied at the library for an hour a day I would do a lot better than cramming. Although we have spended a handful of nights staying up till studying and going over our study guides. In my opinion the skills we learned in this course are skills we will know and use for years to

As a first time college student I have come to realize that its takes hard work and dedication to be successful academically. In order to be successful there are many factors that will lead to a victorious academic career. These skills will help me become successful with my academic goals and a clear outline to the path of my education. It is extremely important to have a plan before the process beings. To achieve these goals there must be a system in place for time management and studying. While attending A College, this student survival guide will help me get the most out of my college experience. As a student through distance learning, the student survival guide will consist of six separate subjects: using A’s educational resources, upholding academic honesty, setting and achieving goals, managing time wisely, fostering reading comprehension and retention and applying personality and learning styles. One of the three most appropriate On Course success strategies that will be best of use to achieve success for me in years to come is discover self-motivation. Defined by Downing as, “finding purpose in their lives by discovering personally meaningful goals and dreams” (296). Being able to use this strategy will be the key to my future success. Having motivation to do all the work given to me from my classes will keep me at a good grade. Passing my classes is what I need to do to reach my goal. I cannot do this without the fuel given to me by my motivation to finish to hard work and reach my destiny. Without my motivation there will be no desire to finish and accomplish what is really important and meaningful in life, and that is not what I want. To me, learning is like a bee pollinating. I am the bee, and learning is the pollen which gets picked up from a flower and then gets dropped off to another flower. I used to think that everyone would learn in a different way than how I learned. I have always had trouble learning; lessons and anything that anybody told me, would somehow not stay inside my brain. I believe that one of the very first ways that we begin to learn is in a section that Temple Grandin discusses in her article. Doing community service was an experience that has shaped my outlook on life. Anything that I do has taken time a lot of effort, but it has paid off with the knowledge that I gained.
The academic journey from my childhood up to my ongoing college experience was an important role in defining who I am as an individual. Like any other person, I eventually gained the understanding and importance of essential qualities like time management, work ethic, developing strong mental mindset, and many other things throughout my years of education.
