Social work is the profession of helping a variety of different people in all aspects of life. For example, as we discussed in class by “creating social conditions favorable for that goal.” Clients are worthy of the decisions they make, it might not always be the best one, but we need them to be able to have self-determination for seeing they have control in their life. Therefore, we need to be sure that everyone has the fairness of having relationships between people. Including you as the helper and outside resources that they might have they can rely on. Advocacy is important because we need to be the voice that clients don’t have and help support the needs that need to be appointed. Every client that we help has the chance to achieve their …show more content…
By learning what was taught in prior class settings show me how different each spectrum is in that targeted area. The way my professors taught us their knowledge of expertise gave me insight of what social work is like. Likewise, I had worked and interned with those that have disabilities ranging from ADHD, autism, dementia, learning disabled and other specifications. I didn’t exactly gain a lot of the skills that will help in the field I want to work, but I am improving those skills by continuing my education to learn how to fix those parts. Lastly, I was once counseled for a previous situation. I observed a lot of what the worker was doing and it gave me perception of how to handle things if I was in her …show more content…
I have this as my first one because as a person who has a learning disability it is difficult as it is to recall information needed for a test. I think I will know if I achieve this by the grades I get on the test, it will either be an extraordinary or low grade. But then again, it isn’t always the information to see if I passed; it is how well I can understand the information that is being presented.
Second, I want to be more engaged in class. I need to be sure that I am up to date for all assignments that are due, motivated myself to do well in classes and hope to achieve a passing grade. By being involving myself with asking for help from professors, seeking out for a tutor and possibility managing my time better. This is a learning goal because I often struggled with being unaware of how I am going to do in class and this can help me understand what to do to be successful in college. I will know if I achieved this goal by the grades I will
When pursuing a degree in social work, one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences within the degree aspect is the capstone project. The capstone is a multi-integrative assignment that is structure to provide social work students with the opportunity to apply their academic, professional and personal experience in the field through the application of a project. With allowing students to master the knowledge, skills, values, and ethics needed for effective social work practice, the capstone project also provide a development to really contribute in the knowledge of the profession. All social work capstone projects encourage students to unite their work to community issues and problems through learning, observations and internship. This paper examines the values, policy, conceptual framework, group
Advocating for clients is one of my natural instincts. In fact, I receive instant gratification when I advocate for a client and know that I am making a difference in their life toward a positive future. Advocating for a client is simply defending and safeguarding their rights, especially to vulnerable populations that don’t have a voice. Case advocacy can be defined as advocating for a specific situation for an individual or family. While cause advocacy is advocating for the larger community and population through social change in policies as well as change within the work place and other agencies. According to Donna McIntosh, every social worker should have a dual focus of social work that includes advocating for the individual and change within the system. This concept makes perfect sense to me, why not knock out two birds with one stone? If a social worker advocates for a client’s specific situation that is also a problem within the community, why not address the individual issue and the community issue at the same time? Previously, I did not fully understand that concept. I envisioned case advocacy as working with the individual/family without incorporating cause advocacy into the picture. Case to cause advocacy can make a difference at the client level and at the global
Throughout the Social Work Program at Winona State University-Rochester, I have been able to expand my knowledge about what it means to be a social worker. Prior to joining this program, when I thought of a social worker, I thought of someone who is highly motivated, compassionate, supportive, and someone who wants to make a difference in somebody’s life. Although this definition is true, overtime I have been able to expand this definition. Now, they are also someone who builds relationships with clients during what are often their lowest points in their lives and they are a person who often will put others needs before their own. Social workers use their knowledge about maintaining a person’s dignity and worth and rely on skills that help them understand people within their environment, and using their training to help people from all walks of life both on the micro level and the macro level.
Interviewing and research skills are needed within the social work profession. Effective communication skills are one of the most crucial components of a social worker’s job. Every day, social workers must communicate with clients to gain information, convey critical information and make important decisions (Zeiger, 2017). This interview experience was an opportunity to explore the daily challenges and rewards of a licensed social worker. I was excited for the opportunity to interview a social worker in the gerontology sector as this is a specialty I am considering. This meeting allowed me to explore the educational steps of being a social worker, practices of the agency, the clients who are served, and the challenges the agency has.
To provide effective social services, a social work graduate must possess a multitude of knowledge, skills and abilities. This will be a reflective paper on everything that I know for sure as a student of social work who is about to go into the world of work.
Research is an indispensible aspect of social work practice and is increasingly becoming even more important to the continual establishment of the profession (Jones & Sherr, 2014; MCauliffe, 2012; McCrystal & Wilson, 2009; Parrish, 2010; Phillips & Shaw, 2011). For disciplines providing services to society, research is fundamental in assessing the effectiveness of practice and instituting it’s professional credibility (McCrystal & Wilson, 2009; Phillips & Shaw, 2011). More specifically to the field of social work, research has been crucial in providing practitioners with framework, decision-making capacity, best practice methodologies, funding for projects, implementing social policy and ongoing development (MCauliffe, 2012; Parrish, 2010). As importantly, research allows for collaboration and sharing of information between the service users and practitioners, and this positively leads to more ownership of the change process by users. (Jones & Sherr, 2014). For this reason, there is a trajectory for more empirical research for social work practice worldwide (McCrystal & Wilson, 2009). The aim of the paper is to identify and explore the key aspects on why research is an invaluable aspect in social work practice.
According to Kirst-Ashman and Zastrow (2012) “ a family is a primary group defined as people who are intimate and have frequent face to face contact with one another, have norms (that is expectations regarding how members in the group should behave) in common and share mutually enduring and extensive influences” (Barker, 2003, p.338). Family members have a significant influence on each other rather it is positive or negative. “Families might consist of intact two-parent families with or without children, single parent families, blended families, step-families, or any other configuration that fits our definition” (Kirstman & Zastrow,2012, p.162).
Explore and analyze how the Panhandle Promise Project is helping end the cycle of incarceration in the family by attaching theory to practice, identifying intervention, providing research and evaluation, understanding how policies affect clients. Furthermore, this paper explore my own journey in understanding and applying social work to the community in an attempt to keep fighting for social justice. As part of my learning experience it is require for all graduate students to do an internship at different agencies, my internship was in the Panhandle Promise Project. The program has been an exciting and educational in my personal journey in understanding my personal values and how to keep the values and ethics
In 2014 the International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW) approved a global definition of the social work profession, definition that states that “Social work is a practice-based profession and an academic discipline that promotes social change and development, social cohesion, and the empowerment and liberation of people […] and engages people and structures to address life challenges and enhance wellbeing.” A social worker is a person that will pursue a private practice career in order to serve and help others with their problems; however, it does not mean that the social worker will not face major challenges in their lives

To serve in Christian Social Ministry means to spread the love of Christ through social manners such as outreaches, events, and non profit organizations just to name a few ways. Before 1950 the major faith based non profit organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Compassion International and Samaritan’s Purse, did not exist. Today we know two gospels: the social gospel and spiritual gospel. Before there was only one gospel, two were created due to enlightenment and modernism putting Christianity in a situation. Science began inferring with faith. Christianity responded by developing two forms: liberal and conservative. Then there was a realization of poverty on a global scale and a desire to change it. This caused there to be more emphasis
Some of us in this society are so accustomed of the familiar daily lives routines that we tend to ignore the social issues that occurs within our environment or we simply aren’t aware of why our society’s structure works the way they are. There are people out there that only used a single story lense to view their surroundings without ever using alternative perceptions. The practice of using the sociological imagination perspective in society is necessary. That way, we are able to view outside of our conscious box to question and identify the social issues in our structures and institutions that influenced our private life. While observing my surroundings with applying the concept of sociological imagination, I’ve realized that there are so many inequalities within our social context that not many of us are aware of because the society had constructed those conditions as acceptable.
families, and communities to enhance their individual and collective well-being. Social workers are change agents and because of that, they aim to help people develop their skills and abilities to use resources provided to them to strengthen and improve their lives and communities to resolve problems. One of the main goal of social workers is to improve the well-being and lives of the most vulnerable populations, fight against poverty, unemployment, domestic violence and the underserviced population by emphasizing on the person-in-environment and social justice model. The social work profession, considerers the individuals’ internal and external struggles, while working with the individuals to examine their relationships, family, work environment, community, and other things that might impact them and identify ways to help address problems and challenges.
The first step that I will take is making sure that I understand the rubric that my teachers give me for writing assignments. This is because on some of my assignments I get points taken off because I either don’t clearly read the directions or I miss certain required parts of what was on the rubric. For example, on my first career journal I had points taken off because I looked at the syllabus that my teacher handed out to us but I didn’t check the rubric that was online that he wanted us to follow. If I would have looked at his syllabus online and used it as my outline I would have gotten a higher grade on my first career journal. My second step that I plan is to study more. I plan to do this because if I study just a little more to retain some of the information I am suppose to know then I will most likely get better grades on major assignments. Major assignments for Strategies for Student Success would include College Journals explain my college experience and how it is going so far and also my midterm and final exam which test my knowledge on all the material in our book. A major assignment that requires me to study would be the quizzes and material games. An example of me studying more is if instead of spending two hours studying and that’s it. I could study on each of my two breaks in between classes for thirty minutes and take a ten minute break and began to study again and etc. This will help me do two things. Store the information that I’ve learned and retain it as well because I’m not trying to remember everything in just one session. After the first and second steps I want to be more active in class to improve my performance in my class. This is because the more you ask questions and the more interactive in class that you are the better you tend to do on assignments as well. An example of me using this step in action would be me
The social work profession is defined as “a practice-based profession and an academic discipline that promotes social change and development, social cohesion, and the empowerment and liberation of people (ISFW, ‘Global Definition of Social Work’, 2016).” The definition may be true about the profession but it is more in depth than just that. To me, the profession’s primary focus is to help others through life as much as we can while letting them make their own choices and guiding them. In society, social workers are utilized in many different nonprofit and government roles. They serve the community in many different ways from monitoring parent visits to helping people through mental illnesses. Human beings are so complex and things that happen
