My concentration for human services is children and family so I took this journal topic very seriously. I was already knowledgable with this topic, but I had never been asked to put them in order from most influential to least. I thought this was going to be really easy but I struggled with deciding which was more influential. I thought the biggest problem for at risk children would be parent criticism, anger, and blaming. Growing up kids look up to their parents and if someone they look up to is making them have low self-esteem that is going to cause major problems later on in life. After that I had temperament of child, this was the one I connected with the most because I feel like people don’t pay enough attention to this section. If the child has a negative temperament they are going to look at things in a negative way, if a child has a positive temperament they are more likely to look at things through a positive way. This is extremely important because where every child is different there is no way to know 100% how they will act in any given situation. After that I had attachment. I feel as if this matters to a degree but in most cases isn’t that big of a problem for at risk kids. If the attachment goes to far and start effecting the child's behavior then it becomes a bigger deal. Its okay for a child to have a strong connection with someone but it should never have to be an issue. The second to last I had was boundaries, I don’t feel like this is really a problem at all. Reading about Saltaman’s own personal experience was something that I could relate to very well myself. Although I do not have any kids, I do worry about how my child will turn out when it comes down to the attachment type. In Human Service practices there are 3 models of service delivery used by professionals. These include the medical model, public health model, and the human service model. Each of these models differs in several ways, although the use of all three interactively, can many times provide the most effective outcomes for clients. Human Service professionals should have knowledge of all 3 models in order to effectively serve each unique individual and his or her specific needs.
The first topic that came up in the interview relates to idea of attachment theory. Attachment theory explains the human’s way of relating to a caregiver and receives an attachment figures relating to the parent, and children. In addition, the concept explains the confidence and ability for a child to free explore their environment with a place to seek support, protection, and comfort in times of distress (Levy, Ellison, Scott, and Bernecker, 2010, p. 193). Within attachment theory explains different types of attachment styles that children experience during early childhood. These attachment styles affect the relationships they continue to build in adulthood. The best attachment style happens when the parent is attuned to the child during his or her early childhood called secure attachment (Reyes, 2010, p. 174). In order for complete secure attachment, the child needs to feel safe, seen, and soothed. Any relationship that deviates from this model represents the anxious or insecure attachment. One thing that I have learned this semester about the human service world is that nonprofits provide the largest contribution towards addressing social issues and advocating for change in the United States. To help achieve their goal, nonprofits receive contributions that are tax-deductible. Consequently, the trade-off for having such benefits also creates limitations on certain activities. In this case, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), which is a government agency that oversees nonprofits and their tax-exempt status, restricts the act of legislative lobbying. Difference in relationship bonds and attachment styles are observable in all races, genders, socioeconomic status’, religions and geographical regions. Identifying attributing behaviors rather than focusing on a specific group of people is beneficial when identifying target populations. Applying attachment theory to explain human behavior, specifically providing awareness to actions committed in adulthood, is relevant across issues within individuals, families, groups, organizations, communities and societies. The Adult Attachment Interview Protocol provided me the opportunity to sit here and interview myself on my own childhood experiences. I’m always interviewing or assessing others but never myself. This assessment allowed me the opportunity to see how different experiences throughout my childhood has affected me as an individual and as an adult.
Attachment plays a vital role in social development. When one becomes comfortable with another person, they then sense a feeling of attachment. Therefore, attachment can best be described as, “the positive emotional bond that develops between a child and a particular, special individual” (Feldman, 2014). Social development occurs at an early age and has an impact on allowing individuals to develop social relationships. The four attachment styles secure attachment, avoidant attachment, ambivalent attachment, and disorganized-disoriented attachment are not always universal, nor “biologically determined; they are susceptive to strong cultural influences” (Feldman, 2014). The process of social development during infancy is very decisive to the child.
Working with others and improving own learning and performance are highly essential skills in social work. In this essay I will reflect on how well I have developed these two skills and what I need to do to improve them.
