One thing that I have learned this semester about the human service world is that nonprofits provide the largest contribution towards addressing social issues and advocating for change in the United States. To help achieve their goal, nonprofits receive contributions that are tax-deductible. Consequently, the trade-off for having such benefits also creates limitations on certain activities. In this case, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), which is a government agency that oversees nonprofits and their tax-exempt status, restricts the act of legislative lobbying. As a result, nonprofits are prohibited to directly interact and influence decision makers.
Although this restriction may seem like a huge limitation, research indicates that nonprofits

As a novice social worker, I am already anticipating the stacks of heavy caseloads, exceptional rates of emotional clients, as well as the unique ethical quandaries I will face on a daily basis. Therefore, a way that I will address the stress will be by adopting healthy strategies to promote self-care at work and home. For example, one method would be to utilize supervision time, which provides opportunities to openly discuss about difficult cases or ethical dilemmas. In this case, a skilled supervisor can help me find better ways to use my time and energy to address challenges at work, so that I am less stressed and more efficient as a social …show more content…
By having an increased awareness of who you as a person, you are able to professionally respond and influence your clients more effectively. I would be able to modify behaviors based on client reactions, understand their defense mechanisms, and be able to set appropriate goals and objectives based off their strengths and weaknesses. Another beneficial skill that I can incorporate in human service is the ability to work and interact well with diverse cultures and groups. This skill can be implied when working with diverse groups of clients or other professionals in an interdisciplinary team. Moreover, I am able to work and facilitate cooperation with other professions and respect the different areas of knowledge and expertise. This would also include expanding potential networks with people outside the organization, as well as building further rapport with staff, including my supervisor.
To seek out quality supervision, I would build rapport with someone who has the experience or knowledge I seek, as well as the willingness to help me in my current role or assist me with future endeavors. When searching for a mentor, I will also be open to the various differences, characteristics, and personalities among potential candidates so that my options are not
Entering the field of social work you must be prepared to encounter many personalities. Knowing this, you have to become aware of people with different backgrounds and morals. By doing this you will be able to help your clients to the best of your ability, without forcing your personal beliefs or values on to them. A value is a set of rules or or beliefs that affect your every day decisions (Sheafor & Horejsi, 2011). Applying your personal values to every situation is very important, however, you must learn to separate what you know and what is in actuality the best outcome for your client. I will be discussing the ways I feel about the “Vignette’s”, while also incorporating different things I have learned from the readings and class discussions.
In Human Service practices there are 3 models of service delivery used by professionals. These include the medical model, public health model, and the human service model. Each of these models differs in several ways, although the use of all three interactively, can many times provide the most effective outcomes for clients. Human Service professionals should have knowledge of all 3 models in order to effectively serve each unique individual and his or her specific needs.
The field of human service consists of particular goals and objectives of human needs, and it promotes improved services delivery systems by addressing the overall quality of life of service population. Similarly, Human service delivery system focuses on how human service professionals approach their work. While encompassing a broad range of idea, Human service is a unique useful and purposeful discipline aiming to assist human needs and communities through an interdisciplinary knowledge base. Human services professional is a generic term for people who hold professional and paraprofessional jobs, and it concerns to improve the quality of life of people, accessibility, accountability, and co-ordination among professional and agencies in service
Cournoyer (2014) holds that if a social worker is self-aware, then he or she can ensure that one’s personal issues and biases remain personal in a professional setting. I scored high on the self-control measure, which indicates that I can manage my thoughts, feelings, and behaviors such that I can simultaneously acknowledge their existence, understand how they might impact my client, and decide how I should react based on my client’s best interests. However, in situations that are emotionally arousing, it is difficult for me to consider other’s thoughts and feelings because when my emotions are raging a disconnect occurs between my intellect and emotions, which in turn produces a narrowed, one-sided perspective. To counteract this tendency, I will practice relaxation techniques such as deep breathing exercises when working with clients to ensure my focus remains on the

The research topic will focus on essential characteristics of human service professionals. Identifying fundamental characteristics that other successful people in the profession have, can create a key component to success for students and people entering into the field. This paper will discuss other research that has been done on characteristics required of human services professionals.
The following paper aims to discuss and analyze the way in which my personal values intersect with the values I hold as most important within the profession of social work. It would stand to reason that these values would stand on common ground; however, there are places where my personal and professional values diverge. These conflicts may prove to be problematic within my chosen career unless I find a way to prioritize my values, or find ways for them to work harmoniously with each other.
The Human Service profession is a gratifying service because not only is it responsible for clients, it is also responsible for the community and environment. Each field has individual responsibilities but together they help one another. Human Service professionals must make sure that they and their employers are each contributing and working well in order for this to work.
Human services covers as broad range of professions and many of the professionals use different models to be able to provide the proper services to their clients. There are three different models used currently by human service professionals, which are the medical model, the public health model, and the human service model (Woodside & McClam, 2015). The models may be used independently or used together based on how the professional chooses to provide the services (Woodside & McClam, 2015). The three different models have certain philosophical assumptions that guide their practices, the assumptions reflect the beliefs about the cause of the problem, their treatment, and how the professional uses the model (Woodside & McClam,
Based on your experience, to what extent do you agree or disagree with Hammonds’ arguments and why?
My first couple of weeks at the Vidant Home Health and Hospice, the supervisor guided me through the roles and responsibilities that the social workers do and what's expected of me. I invested a great deal of time sitting in on assessments that my supervisor would do, and watching and listening to the sorts questions she would ask, and the way they would react to patients’ differing states of mind, attitude, and exhibiting issues. I was appreciative that I was given this opportunity to watch, process, and ask questions. When I started doing my first assessment autonomously, I encountered endless feelings. I felt energized and anxious to dive into the work, yet also apprehensive and questioning myself about how much capacity I have to do
Nonprofit organizations impact communities all over the world from addressing issues to helping people, these organizations are vital to the livelihood of millions of people. Over the past couple of decades, in the United States, there has been an overwhelming increase in the reliance for nonprofits to address and ultimately solve social issues and respond to individual and national crises. However, through the nonprofit interactions, one internal issue is often neglected, the sustainability of these organizations. As stated in an article by the Corporation for National and Community Service, “Without the resources to strengthen and maintain the infrastructure and services of nonprofit organizations, this sector will be unable to respond effectively to growing demands.”
Some of the things that I need to work on is being able to be more in the present, being able to focus on what needs to take place now then what needs to be done in the future. To focus on the present needs and to only reflect on the past or future when it is necessary. I have a tendency to always want to look towards the future instead of living in the here and now. Another thing for me to work on is finding that value in others. As I go about this course I am able to gain more of the respect care, trust and value in others. Working in a helping profession it is important to find that sense of worth for others even when you feel they have done every problem they have to themselves. Trusting is a huge problem I run into as it is really hard to trust others. I feel that if I work on creating more healthy boundaries that this trait will also be effected in that I will be able to value and trust others. Boundaries are another thing that I have difficulty with it is hard for me to say no in both my personal and professional life. To be able to address this problem, I feel will help me significantly in many areas. Another trait in which I feel I may have difficulty mastering is cultural sensitivity. Especially when it comes to sexual orientation. Understanding the differences that one feels when it comes to their gender and sexual preference. Being able to set my beliefs aside and help someone who has a different belief from mine is something I find will always be something I need to work on. I have the ability to accept people for who they are but finding the words to help someone who believes differently is going to be a challenge and one that I will have to overcome as it is not
Prior to having the class of Professional Values and Ethics, I assumed I understood the basic concepts of what defines a professional who has competence of values and ethics. Nevertheless, by being enrolled in this course, I have gained great knowledge of which professional values and ethical principles must be held by a social worker, which I did not know before. Progressively in this class, by learning professional values and ethics, my motivation to succeed as an upcoming social worker has gotten stronger.
There are certain ethics that social workers must follow and is a guidance for professional standard of work. However sometimes people are not aware of their own values, though the more fully conscious someone is about their values, the more people are able to ensure that their actions are consistent with the values. As a social worker it is vital to know the dangers of not taking account of values and the ethical dimension of practice. A social worker should see their client for who they are and not just another object that is unclear by their own emotions hence why self-awareness is a key to
