Social work is a multifaceted, ever adapting profession, which has had many purposes and identities through the years. It is imperative for the vocation to constantly evolve alongside the social climate and the new ways in which we identify and treat those who are in need of support. Social workers can be required to take on the role of counsellor, advocate, case-worker, partner, assessor of risk and need, and at times (as the government seeks to push social work further and further towards the health and education sectors) a servant of the state. As a human service professional, hereafter to referred to as, “HSP”, I am very well aware that my attitudes and beliefs would differ from his for the fact I did not grow up in the same environment as Andre. No matter where someone came from, it is a HSP responsibility to remain impartial and treat the client with respect, without prejudice and of course not hold any type of stereotypical thoughts pertaining to Andre for the previous life he has lead. Like him cleaning up and trying to move on, we must start with a clean slate. Being open to everything he is confiding in you as a professional will allow the sessions to be effective in the outcome of his treatment. When you are a HSP, your education never ends. There are always new laws passing
I have always assumed that a Receptionist working for a social service agency would have thankful people walking in the doors, or calling for help daily; and, as the first person who speaks to those in need, the Receptionist would obtain a high sense of fulfillment from providing information regarding needed services to people, However, if you think this is true, then you only have half of the story. It is true that, as the Receptionist, you get the honor of helping people, but you also take on the weight of hearing the stories of the clients who are calling for a variety of reasons – their water just got shut off and, if they cannot afford to get it turned back on, this could lead to Children’s Services taking their child away; or taking
I want to be a human resources specialist because it has good money. It’s in a business I have always wanted to be in a business. I also want to be that because you can hire and fire people. You also have to give people drug test very frequent in this career and in almost every career. You also have to do a lot of paper work.
After finishing this course, I'm prepared and be more perceptive about culture. I am more awared in interacting with new culture. Also, how other cultures have had a phenomenal impact on how I view everyday situations and how I draw conclusions, whether it’s about an ethnic group, my own and others or about hot topics in the news. Before this class I did not realize cultural relativism. I really was ethnocentric because I never took the time to evaluate other people’s cultures independently of my own. While I think it is normal for people to judge their peers, coworkers, etc. based on their experiences I also feel it would be beneficial for all of us to take the time to try and understand the sociological point of view of others that are not familiar to us or view things very different from us. The tools I have learned in this class seems to have made me a better listener and emphasizer because I have caught myself listening to people just to hear them and not just to respond. The change in my outlook about being intertwined in society has improved my communication skills at work and at

Because it showed me that I judge situations based on my own personal culture, I know now that I should begin to work on looking at the bigger picture, especially when I am dealing with clients. In the future, this will help me deal with clients that may be from a different background than what I grew up in. It could also potentially help me understand the economic limitations of some families as opposed to others. As social workers, we have to be able to understand that not all families are the same, and not all families will be relatable to the experience we had as children. It will not do to judge situations based on our own life and
