Being a professional can mean so many things. I will be talking about three topics that are important to me. I will start by discussing what it means to be a professional, why the Human Resource Sergeant’s role in the Army is important, and how to balance the role of being a professional leader. This is what I believe to be important. What does it mean to be a professional? Some say it’s an occupation that requires prolonged training or education. I agree with that statement and here is why I think that the Military is a profession. We are always learning whether it is going to a school for leadership or a new Military Occupational Specialty code (MOS). We as professionals can also pick up pointers from our fellow Soldiers whether they’re our seniors, peers or subordinates. Professionals use their lifelong pursuit of expert knowledge, camaraderie and being honorable, just like the Military. Being a professional means being able to keep up with your training and education. Being in this profession I get a sense of honor and pride just being in the uniform and in the organization. I go to drill every month or on special missions and I don’t feel like I am walking into a job. a. Army HR systems are integral to allowing HR professionals to accurately process and track promotions, movement of personnel, awards, strength reporting, generate metrics, assist with the assessment and tracking of individual medical/dental readiness, and mobilization transactions.
The Army Human Resource System (AHRS) known as the Electronic Military Personnel Office or (eMILPO) is a web based multi-tiered application. It provides the Army Human Resource Community with a reliable mechanism for performing personnel actions and strength accountability. The System consolidates 43 Personnel Information Systems in one. This system provides visibility of the location, status, and skills of Soldiers in the United States Army. The primary users of this system are Human Resource Soldiers, Commanders, and First Sergeants. The primary features and functions of eMILPO include Personnel Services, Personnel Accounting, Reassignments, Promotions, Readiness, Workflows, System Services, PERSTEMPO, and DTAS.
We can identify three major cultural dimensions that help us to understand what leaders must focus on as they guide the transition of the Army. First, professional Identity, which is guided by Soldiers at all levels who are striving for excellence in their functional specialty, i.e., HR Sergeants. Soldiers who have goals and ideals of the Army to ethically put service and duty first. HR Sergeants are trained and well educated in their field. They are taught to put Soldiers first and have great customer support skills. Second, community, the sense in which Soldiers stop thinking about “I” and start thinking “we”. The bond among units who not only believe in cohesion with Soldiers, but their families too. The HR Sergeants are there to take care of Soldiers when financial issues arise with them or their families and don’t back down until the situation is solved. Last, hierarchy, which leads to order and control and provides Soldiers with moral reference and a sense of direction. The HR Sergeant has the mentality of mission first, knowing who to contact at the next level for assistance helps get the mission
Webster’s dictionary defines the word profession as a type of job that requires special education, training, or skill. Many Soldiers would not consider the Army as a profession but a way of life. Some think the word profession belongs to everyday jobs like a plumber, mechanic, or doctor. Dr. Don M. Snider stated “the Army is a profession because of the expert work it produces, because the people in the Army develop themselves to be professionals, and because the Army certifies them as such” (Snider, D. M. 2008). In October 2010, the Secretary of the Army directed the Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) to lead an Army wide assessment of the state of the Army Profession. We have been at war as a Country for over a decade and the Army wanted to know how to shape the future of the Army as a profession and the effects the past decade had on our profession.
There are many attributes that contribute to being professional. The many that stick out in my mind are responsibility and accountability, leadership, honor and integrity, respect, and caring compassion and communication. All of these attributes pertain to the professional work environment in the own important way. When you are a professional you need to have responsibility and accountability. This means you have to demonstrate awareness of your own limitations, and identify developmental needs and approaches for improvements. Professionals in the United States Marine Corps stand apart from others engaged in particular careers in the civilian world.While many vocations contain some of the characteristics of professional, a lot of careers do not include all of the elements necessary to distinguish themselves as being as close to a professional as a marine. Professionalism grows depending on the time and service they have in the Marine Corps. A professional has specialized knowledge and skill which can only be acquired through prolonged education and experience. Such skill and experience form the basis of objective standards of professional competence that separate the practicing professional from their peers and measure the competence of such professional. If I were Sergeant Major of the Army, I would use my time in that position to better the United States Army is every possible way. The Army as we see it today is constantly trying to stay ahead of the power curve when adjusting to change to meet the realism of society as it currently stands and indoctrinating new troops to increase the fighting force for the Army of the future. When I last wrote a paper based on this same premise, the Army was drawing down like in manner not seen since the end of the Vietnam era. The Army military as a whole was once again trying to transition its self from both the Iraqi and Afghan wars to preparing for the a potential WWIII with Russia.
