The Refugee Dilemma is an issue that creates diverse opinions across the country, and often leads to arguments in politics. Some believe refugees should be banned from entering the U.S. Some believe we should help all we can. However, a large number of Americans believe this with little support. A logic approach to the pressing “How should the refugee situation be handled?”, after doing the research, of course, is refugees should still be allowed in. Criteria, though, should still be met and enforced. America should also focus on providing their aid/focus to refugees’ home countries as well. For those who do end up in the U.S. however, their success in our country should be ensured and encouraged. According to the Department of Homeland Security, With this amount of money being owed by taxpayers, it shows the tremendous amount of investment we have in refugees. As a country, we should continue to honor that investment, and continue the help we give to refugees. However, this money is to “support the 519,018 refugees who have been resettled,” (Breitbart) in the United States. While money is needed to fund the supplies given to the refugees here, especially the resources we give them such as “apartment, which has basic furnishings,” “applying for a Social Security card, registering children in school,” etc. which is stated by the Primary Source. A wise way to spend the money is focusing on the refugees here, and ensuring success amongst them with resources like this, then as they begin to build their own life more can be brought in, so resources are constantly flowing to refugees. This also will ensure refugees become successful in our society. In addition, the money not spent in the U.S. should go to countries who also take on refugees, and to refugees’ home countries. This provides resources for refugees around the world, not just those who are able to make it in America, and begins to bring money to fixing the root of the problem. That’s what problem-solving is all According to Oxfam International, the “US has only met 10% of its fair share of resettling refugees.” That means the U.S. has the ability to handle 90% more of the refugees than we are providing for. Now, this brings in the point of taking on that many more refugees would cause the refugee’s success rate in America to plummet because they won’t be focused on as thoroughly. This isn’t something we want to cause, so not meeting our maximum quota of refugees is acceptable on a few conditions. Clearly, if we have the ability to help more we can still provide the origin countries aid, to hopefully stop the refugee crisis, as well as provide aid to those countries like Jordan, Lebanon, and Turkey who do tend to take on a lot of refugees. This easily provides a solution, and assists the refugee dilemma on three different fronts. Consequently, with a dilemma like this one, regarding a controversial topic in politics, it’s expected to get a wide array of solutions. It’s also important to note, there will be no decision that will truly please everyone. However, through research, an educated opinion can be made, one that might even please a majority. With this solution, and the aid it provides in many different ways, it can only be hoped that it pleases all who plead for aid to refugees. Maybe one day, a proposal
