As a child I always dreamt of having a fairytale life but as years passed by this fairytale dream kind of thinking became aware of how reality can hit you back. This generation has caused a lot of drastic change in terms of lifestyle, personal preferences and even how we want to succeed in life. Without respect you can never be professional. Respect is the beginning of a great service. If you have respect with what you are doing, your co-workers, clients, the company and even those you barely know within your workplace, you are one step ahead in justifying being professional. Showing respect and treating all people like they matter the most are good characteristic that always make difference not only in the workplace but you as a person too. The company can set their rules and grounds to measure professionalism of their employees but at the end of the line it is you who will determine if you did respect or disrespect someone on your entire career. In this scenario, Margaret is a newly hired medical assistant for this very busy medical practice. Margaret had good intentions with wanting to leave a good impression. However, she should have thought more about patient care and her ability to perform a procedure on her own. Fortunately, even though the office seemed to need the extra help. Margaret being a new hire and having not much time with blood draws, or the way that the office is run. Should have consulted with one of the experienced staff members of RN’s, Medical assistants and seven providers. She should have also asked about their policy and the procedures that the practice uses.
Proper respect for others begins by a person respecting their self. Respect is developed by expressing honor, leadership, value, and trust in a person. If everyone respects everyone someday, the world will become a seventh heaven. It is important to be respectful for safety, to abide by the law, because children are influenced by their elders’ actions, and because God says so. Motivation from peers can help a person realize there is always room to improve the level of respect a person exhibits. Respect was, is, and always will be a positive attribute for everyone to strive for in their lives.
One of the first steps in of professionalism is dress; I make sure I am always dressed both professionally and comfortably for our classroom setting. For example if I know we are going to the Playscape, I wear either closed toed tennis or water shoes so I can get down and dirty and interacting with the children, really exploring the landscape. If I am wearing a dress I am conscious of how I sit or even go at step further and wear leggings underneath just so I don’t have to be worried. Another aspect of professionalism in the classroom is language. I always use appropriate language when speaking to the children, parents and my coworkers. Confidentiality is also a part of professionalism. Whenever I am taking notes or speaking of a child I am sure to keep it a confidential, I do not use names and am sure to only keep the information between the teaching team and I.
Professionalism is defined as the accrued knowledge and behavior possessed by individuals in order to obtain successful goals and attributes for their organization, facility or work environment (McDonagh, 2008). Being professional while at work let others know that you are reliable, respectful, and competent at what you do. Professionalism in a medical office is very important, it means putting patient needs as top priority. Professionalism in a medical office is taking responsibility of your patients, committing to patient confidentiality, and having patient-centered care for the patients.
Throughout this paper, I will talk about what professionalism in the workplace is. I will describe different viewpoints from different sources as well as my own perspective on the subject. There are many attributes that contribute to being professional. The many that stick out in my mind are responsibility and accountability, leadership, honor and integrity, respect, and caring compassion and communication. All of these attributes pertain to the professional work environment in the own important way. When you are a professional you need to have responsibility and accountability. Professionalism is defined as one's conduct at work. The quality of professionalism is not restricted to those in occupations with high level of education or high earnings. Being able to create a professional identity is unique to each individual that experiences it. A professional identity, when working in human services, is one that can be quite complex. One needs to take into great consideration the different factors that come into play when developing a state of professionalism. These factors including: being unbiased, having the knowledge of poverty and oppressed individuals, creating a positive atmosphere for clients, serving clients with their basic human rights, achieving social justice to the best of your ability and keeping complete confidentiality. There are many different factors to list, but one may believe that the six factors mentioned are definitely most important.
