Professionalism can be defined in several ways depending on who is defining it and the environment it is being applied to. According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, professionalism is defined as the skill, good judgement, and polite behavior that is expected from a person who is trained to do a job well. In regards to becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor I believe these elements are key to achieving success. The most important components of acting as a professional and achieving success to me are: motivation, resilience, teamwork, people skills, high quality work, and self-development. I once read an article on these traits and it has stuck with me through the years.

Professionalism in the broadest sense is the characteristics or qualities that someone in a specific job or profession is expected to exhibit. Nursing is no different, having a core set of values expected universally from all nurses. In 1988, to help in educating nursing students in these core qualities, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) established five essential values that describe relationships between professional nurses. They are altruism, autonomy, human dignity, integrity and social justice. These essential values are all present in some form in nurses who demonstrate exceptional professionalism and who help elevate nursing as a whole to a respected profession (Vezeau, 2006, p. 8). As nursing students take on their professional identity it is important that they can represent these core values expected from the public in all nurses.
Professionalism is a combination of actions and behaviors; it is what we do and how we do it. Professionalism is also assessing yourself to identify your strengths/weaknesses, pinpoint areas of development, and detect the knowledge and skills required to achieve your goals.
To name a few examples of professionalism in the workplace - is being on time, limiting absences, can communicate effectively, dress in suitable clothes, and shows a willingness to work with others. Having a positive attitude in stressful setting is another great example. Professionalism will show in your actions and people around you will notice it. Once people notices your display of professionalism, you will gain respect and trust in your workplace. However, if you dig deeper, all the examples of professionalism mentioned above, it all boils down into one reason- attitude. It is an attitude to show up at work early, and not miss work. It is an attitude that you can communicate effectively. It is an attitude that you can willingly work with others. Accountability is the responsibility and actions of a professional. He or she is responsible for achieving the maximum potential for the profession. A professional with integrity has the fundamental morals to do what is right. Professionalism also means to excel in the designated profession by having the motivation to acquire new knowledge and share it with others.
Prior to having the class of Professional Values and Ethics, I assumed I understood the basic concepts of what defines a professional who has competence of values and ethics. Nevertheless, by being enrolled in this course, I have gained great knowledge of which professional values and ethical principles must be held by a social worker, which I did not know before. Progressively in this class, by learning professional values and ethics, my motivation to succeed as an upcoming social worker has gotten stronger.
But first it will explain what professionalism really means. Professionalism is not based all on appearance; it is how a person conducts themselves as a professional. For example, showing professionalism is showing up to work on time. A famous phrase that is used is “when a person is early they are on time and when a person is on time they are late.” Another way of showing professionalism is good communication skills, whether verbal or nonverbal. Let’s break this down more, communication can be spoken words, written, body language, facial expressions are a few ways to communicate. Keep in mind that when showing professionalism all of these actions must be done in a positive manner. Next thing that needs to be explained is what the word etiquette means. Etiquette is “expected behavior that shows respect, which is meant to make everyone feel comfortable“("Etiquette," 2016). For example, when arriving to work on time and greeting other employees with a simple “Good morning, how are you today”, is showing professionalism and etiquette. When showing both of these critiques it is highly possible to succeed in a career. It makes others feel comfortable to be around and work with others with the same work habits. This will also help to climb the corporate ladder or to advance higher in the career. Being open minded can also show signs of etiquette when it comes to people with different cultural backgrounds and ethics. This also can help to make the work environment to be comfortable for all employees, no matter race, gender, or nationality. For example, working as a Healthcare Administrator they will come into contact with different people and they have to show professionalism and etiquette at all times because they can make the staff members and other executive members feel uncomfortable and make the work place hard to work in.
