Humans are curious beings that want to know the why and how of something. Humans challenge authority and strive to be better by asking questions such as what is right and wrong? Should some rule over everything? Do people decide their own fate? What is beauty? Many other questions have been asked and are still being asked today, but probably the most important question is how did all these questions start? The Ancient Greeks are the foundation of philosophical thoughts, they were the first; all that is pondered today can be traced back to them. Through drama and philosophy the Greeks started asking big questions that began to change the world around them and influence the world to come.
Movies and plays of today are designed to entertain.
One goes to the movies to be thrilled or inspired, but underneath everything one initially sees is a complex idea that challenges a particular view. Every form of entertainment today has an underlying meaning; a theme, which was started by Greek drama. The ancient Greeks plays were not created for entertainment they were “…used to educate citizen…” and challenge people to think (Spielvogel 77). The plays were usually about myths so everyone already knew what was going on and the stage and actors were humbly designed. Greek plays were not extravagant; they were simple in design so the audience could focus on the important parts. Sadly, out of the many plays that were written only thirty three plays are still in existence, but those have provided plenty of information. Some of the important tragedy playwrights were Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides; these men directed their tragedies so they could challenge problems of the day. They brought up issues of “…the nature of good and evil, the conflict between spiritual values and the demands of state or family, the rights of the individual…” and many more were addressed in their plays (Spielvogel 78). Through the simplicity of the Greek’s drama productions the audience could ponder issues and start asking questions of their own, proving that humans are free thinking individuals. Philosophy was a different matter, instead of thinking about one thing and its opposite, like the plays, philosophy thought of the complex matters that did not really have a direct answer. Philosophy means the “love of wisdom” and the three famous philosophers, Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, definitely lived up to this motto. During the beginning of philosophy, the Greeks focused on understanding “… the nature of the universe…” but as time went on philosophers thought it would be more important to think on how “…individuals (can) improve themselves…” (Spielvogel 80). Socrates’ Socratic Method was used by philosophers to come to answers which led to new questions and answers, this shows how the Greek philosophers sought to improve humanity. Plato, a student of Socrates, focused on ideas which to him were truth. Many of his thoughts and findings are written down for people to still ponder on today. Through Socrates and Plato ancient Greeks could have a better understanding of the world they lived in. Greek drama and philosophy has showed me how people began to understand the world. Thoughts began to form, questions arose, and movements were made by Greeks challenging a traditional viewpoint. The actions of the Greeks gives me hope that I can make a difference in the world by saying the things no one wants to and daring to make points that go against the status quo. If three Greek philosophers and playwrights can change the world by merely speaking their minds, then so can I. Overtime, people have made innovations that have completely changed human life because as humans we are constantly seeking to improve ourselves. The idea of improvement started with the Greeks, they asked the big questions that got us where we are today. The birthplace of ideas was in Greece, they started thinking things that people still struggle with today. Drama and Philosophy allowed the Greeks to start thinking outside of the cave and it set the stage for people and thoughts to come.
"Where did man come from? Where did time begin? Who, or what, created all things?" These are questions that mankind has sought to answer from the beginning of existence as it is known today. Many stories and fables have been told and passed down from generation to generation, yet two have survived the test of time and criticism.
The Greek language was not original. It was originally from a different group of people that the Greeks traded with. A lot of people don’t know that much about the Greek language. You might have questions like, what was the Greek alphabet? Who made it and when? What did Greeks write about? Who still uses this ancient language? How did their alphabet influence the actual word “alphabet”? Greece was an ancient civilization that influenced many other languages. Their alphabet is known world wide. But what is the history behind it? ("The Greek Alphabet - Ancient Greece for Kids.", 2013.)
Philosophy is a very important part of people’s lives. Philosophy is quite basically asking inquiries about existence, reality and nature of knowledge. To better understand philosophy we must look throughout history. Looking back through history helps better show what the philosophers thought during the time period in which they lived. The relativity of the theories, to the time period, is a very important factor in how efficient these theories they were. The first philosopher’s ideas to people today would be considered either very basic, or insane. Yet, in the time period they lived in, they were considered to be geniuses. Also, looking back through time and studying philosophers and what they believed can help create a better idea for our own philosophical creations. The first philosophers were also known as the Presocratics. They were called this because they were in a time period before Socrates was born. They mainly focused on answering what is the explanation of nature, also referred to as metaphysics. Even before the Presocratic philosophers, we need to look at the ancient Greek poets that created myths and examine how their stories came into being made and how it had an effect on their civilization. These myths are a part of Philosophy because they were the first ideas about creation. The transition between these mythic worldviews and pre-Socratic philosophers’ worldview was important because it lays down the structural work for great philosophers to learn from them and develop further theories based on their findings.
The Science, Art or practice of the cultivation of soil, producing crops, raising livestock and in varying degrees, the preparation and marketing of the resulting products (Jennings). Otherwise known as Agriculture. Since the early 7th Century CE, the idea of agriculture has been well known. Many of the techniques and strategies, used many years ago, are continually used today (Owings 17). Moreover, modern agriculture is simply just an “Updated version”, if you will, of Ancient Greek Agriculture, containing much the same aspects as one another.
It is always important to look to the past in order to move towards the future. This was done in the formation of Western Society, and more specifically the formation of American society. The Greek culture served as a frame of reference for many aspects of Western life including government, architecture, math and the arts. Ancient Greek culture served as a very broad base for our society to be built upon.
Western Europe. But how did this western way of life come to be? Their are many different
How do we explain the world around us? How can we get to the truth? Plato and Aristotle began the quest to find the answers thousands of years ago. Amazingly, all of philosophy since that time can be described as only a rehashing of the original argument between Plato and Aristotle. Plato and Aristotle's doctrines contrast in the concepts of reality, knowledge at birth, and the mechanism to find the truth.
Humans are curious creatures. This shows truth with Adam and Eve as they lived and explored the Garden of Eden. Adam used his mind to name the different animals. Ever since then, the human race has continued to learn and explore. This earliest learning had no name other than pure curiosity, but as people began to become scholars, this exploration became known as philosophy. This form of thinking became popular in the Greek city-states such as Athens. Philosophy was early scholar’s way of understanding life and how it worked. Plato is a famous philosopher, born in 429 B.C., who was passionate about finding logic, instead of blaming events on the Greek gods (Plato, Wikipedia). Almost 700 years later, in 354 A.D. another phenomenal philosopher,
Something that I noticed was that creations from ancient Greek times have influenced the present. An example of this includes how we design buildings, there are many buildings in America that utilize Greek structures such as, the columns on the Supreme Court Building. Columns were first used by ancient Greeks in the middle bronze age (2000-1550) BC and it amazes me how we are still using something today, that was created so long ago. The columns on the supreme court building include a base and volutes, a base was needed because the columns were thinner than they were in the Doric order. Columns like this were created during the Ionic order.
Most of philosophy deals with the ÒselfÓ. People are always trying to find out who they are; why theyÕre here; or how things relate to them. All of our lives are spent on a road of self discovery, seeing what the world has to offer us, and where our place really is. If we were to actually look closely, we would see that
The Daily Life of Ancient Greeks Life in Greece in ancient times will remind you of your own life in many ways. There were school, family, athletic competitions, and social gatherings. Knowing that participants in their sporting events competed nude or that you rarely knew your husband/wife until the wedding day does however, make you grateful for the society that you live in today. Babies Life for the Greeks in Athens began in their home. Babies were delivered by the women of the family, and only in cases of serious complications was a mid-wife called.
Could you imagine life in the United States today without concepts like democracy, libraries, the alphabet, art, philosophy, mathematics and certain architectural features? (Anonemuss, 2010) Everyday life would be completely changed without these innovations as well as many others. So where did we get these ideas from first? Well it dates back to the Greeks and Romans. Many aspects of modern life have been influenced from their cultures, ideas and inventions. Then there is also the question whether classical Greece or classical Rome influenced the contemporary United States more. In my opinion Classical Greece has had more of an impact on our lives. In fact it had been stated that the Greeks are considered the first group of people from ancient civilization in which our society feels like they can connect and relate t. (Kreis, 2000)
